On finite-temperature holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit
Holographic models in the T=0 universality class of QCD in the limit of large
number N_c of colors and N_f massless fermion flavors, but constant ratio
x_f=N_f/N_c, are analyzed at finite temperature. The models contain a
5-dimensional metric and two scalars, a dilaton sourcing TrF^2 and a tachyon
dual to \bar qq. The phase structure on the T,x_f plane is computed and various
1st order, 2nd order transitions and crossovers with their chiral symmetry
properties are identified. For each x_f, the temperature dependence of p/T^4
and the quark-antiquark -condensate is computed. In the simplest case, we find
that for x_f up to the critical x_c\sim 4 there is a 1st order transition on
which chiral symmetry is broken and the energy density jumps. In the conformal
window x_c<x_f<11/2, there is only a continuous crossover between two conformal
phases. When approaching x_c from below, x_f\to x_c, temperature scales
approach zero as specified by Miransky scaling.Comment: 66 pages, 29 figure
Magnesium treatment in alcoholics: a randomized clinical trial
BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is common among alcoholics. Earlier research suggests that Mg treatment may help to normalize elevated enzyme activities and some other clinically relevant parameters among alcoholics but the evidence is weak. METHODS: The effect of Mg was studied in a randomized, parallel group, double-blind trial. The patients were first treated for alcohol withdrawal symptoms and then received for 8 weeks either 500 mg of Mg divided into two tablets or matching placebo. Measurements were made at the beginning and in the end of the Mg treatment period. The primary outcome was serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (S-GGT) activity; secondary outcomes included aspartate-aminotransferase (S-AST) and alanine-aminotransferase (S-ALT) activity. RESULTS: The number of randomized patients (completers) was 64 (27) in the treatment and 54 (31) in the control group. In intention-to-treat-analyses and in most analyses of study completers, there were no significant differences between the Mg-treated and placebo groups in the outcome variables. When baseline serum Mg level, coffee intake, and the number of unused Mg tablets were controlled for in a multivariate regression model, after-treatment serum Mg levels were found to be higher among the Mg-treated group than in the placebo group (t-test 3.334, df = 53, p = 0.002). After controlling for age, body weight, baseline alcohol intake, subsequent change in alcohol intake and baseline S-AST, the after-treatment S-AST levels were found to be lower among the Mg-treated group than in the placebo group (t-test 2.061, df = 49, p = 0.045). CONCLUSION: Mg treatment may speed up the S-AST decrease in compliant patients. This might decrease the risk of death from alcoholic liver disease. Introduced species in the Pantanal : implications for conservation
________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTLand use and human occupation within the natural habitats of the Pantanal have facilitated introduction of invasive species of plants and animals, including domestic species. Exotic species threaten regional biodiversity because they modify ecological community structure, alter natural habitats and affect local biodiversity. An international organisation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Brazilian government, identify invasive species as the third most important threat to biodiversity, following habitat loss and direct effect on species. In addition, exotic species carry pathogens or may function as vectors or reservoirs for diseases that affect regional biota
Methanol-HVO blends for efficient low-temperature combustion: analytical research on fuel properties
Received: January 31st, 2023 ; Accepted: April 15th, 2023 ; Published: August 14th, 2023 ; Correspondence: [email protected] low-temperature combustion (LTC) engines can accommodate
ultra-high efficiency with near-zero NOx and PM emissions. Reaction kinetics is the governing
mechanism in LTC. Onboard fuel reactivity control is, thus, becoming an interesting concept that
ultimately provides pathways toward a fully fuel-flexible engine. No matter the technical
realisation - in-cylinder blending or pre-blending/emulsification - the reactivity control requires
fuels with complementary properties. Methanol and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) seem to
be one of the most promising, yet under-studied combination for LTC engines. They are both
renewable and can be mixed together. Methanol’s high knock resistance and large latent heat of
evaporation enable a wide engine load range, with a propensity to reduce NOx emissions and
mitigate thermal or mechanical stress. The same properties on the other hand require highly
reactive fuel to enable the mixture to self-ignite controllably in LTC conditions. HVO is amongst
the most reactive renewable alternatives and its clean paraffinic structure further mitigates
particle matter formation. - Importantly, in pre-blending HVO emulsification can resolve the
lubricity issues of methanol. In this paper, the aim was to study the engine-relevant properties of
HVO-methanol fuel blends. The analysed properties were the distillation properties, density,
kinematic viscosity, cetane index, and flash point. Based on the results, the suitability of the
chosen blend shares for LTC concepts was evaluated
Liikuttava koulupiha:lasta osallistava tapaustutkimus koulupihan kehittämisestä
Increasing melanism along a latitudinal gradient in a widespread amphibian: local adaptation, ontogenic or environmental plasticity?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The thermal benefits of melanism in ectothermic animals are widely recognized, but relatively little is known about population differentiation in the degree of melanism along thermal gradients, and the relative contributions of genetic <it>vs. </it>environmental components into the level of melanism expressed. We investigated variation in the degree of melanism in the common frog (<it>Rana temporaria</it>; an active heliotherm thermoregulator) by comparing the degree of melanism (i) among twelve populations spanning over 1500 km long latitudinal gradient across the Scandinavian Peninsula and (ii) between two populations from latitudinal extremes subjected to larval temperature treatments in a common garden experiment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that the degree of melanism increased steeply in the wild as a function of latitude. Comparison of the degree of population differentiation in melanism (<it>PST</it>) and neutral marker loci (<it>FST</it>) revealed that the <it>PST </it> ><it>FST</it>, indicating that the differences cannot be explained by random genetic drift alone. However, the latitudinal trend observed in the wild was not present in the common garden data, suggesting that the cline in nature is not attributable to direct genetic differences.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>As straightforward local adaptation can be ruled out, the observed trend is likely to result from environment-driven phenotypic plasticity or ontogenetic plasticity coupled with population differences in age structure. In general, our results provide an example how phenotypic plasticity or even plain ontogeny can drive latitudinal clines and result in patterns perfectly matching the genetic differences expected under adaptive hypotheses.</p
