While Instrumental Music Education (IME) is offered to students in most developed countries, its rationale and implementation differ significantly due to the sociocultural values and expectations of each society, which tend to remain implicit within educational policies. In this article, we argue that each society should be fully aware of the characteristics of their IME models, which requires self-reflection and careful examination of alternative models. To facilitate this process, we propose a framework to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of IME models. The field of comparative education provides strategies to analyze similarities and differences in policies around the world. With the goal of identifying the various dimensions involved in IME models, we provide a detailed analysis of three contrasting cases: Spain, the United States of America, and Singapore. The variables considered are educational philosophy, presence of IME within schools, curriculum and assessment, and teacher education. Based on a documentary analysis, these cases lead to the identification of four analytic dimensions: Accessibility, Value attributed to IME, Professionalization and Specialization, and Teacher’s Qualification and Requirements. We encourage policymakers around the world to utilize this four-dimension framework to gain awareness of the role IME plays in their respective countrie

The medieval town of Handoga (Djibouti): A report of the 2021 field season

The article presents the results of the first campaign carried out at the medieval site of Handoga (Djibouti) by the StateHorn project, based at the Institute of Heritage Sciences of the Spanish National Research Council. The aim of the campaign was to assess the site's potential in order to launch a long-term project focusing on the study of the town's urbanism and way of life. The campaign included a systematic survey of the site and the excavation of four test pits, which revealed evidence for two archaeological phases at Handoga. The results of the campaign suggest that Handoga was an important urban centre on the medieval routes linking the Gulf of Tadjoura with the interior of Africa, of which very little is known

Prognostic Factor Utility of BAP1 Immunohistochemistry in Uveal Melanoma: A Single Center Study in Spain

Even today, the mortality rate for uveal melanoma (UM) remains very high. In our research, we sought to determine which pathological and clinical features were correlated with the prognosis of UM. BAP1 (BRCA1-Associated Protein 1) gene mutation has been analyzed as one of the strongest predictors for metastasis in UM. The BAP1 gene codifies the BAP1 protein which has a tumor suppressor function. The presence of this protein can be determined by BAP1 immunohistochemical staining. Eighty-four uveal melanoma patients and forty enucleated eyeballs were examined. Metastasis was present in 24 patients. Nuclear BAP1 staining was low in 23 patients. The presence of a higher large basal diameter tumor (p < 0.001), tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (p = 0.020), and a lack of nuclear BAP1 immunostaining (p = 0.001) ocurred significantly more often in the metastatic group. Metastasis-free survival was lower in patients with low nuclear BAP1 staining (p = 0.003). In conclusion, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that BAP1 staining has been studied in uveal melanoma in a Spanish community. We believe that this technique should become routine in the pathological examination of uveal melanoma in order to allow adequate classification of patients and to establish an individual follow-up plan. This research was partially funded by research grants from the “Instituto de Salud Carlos III/European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)” and RD16/0008/0011, OFTARED: Enfermedades oculares: “Prevención, detección precoz, tratamiento y rehabilitación de las patologías oculares”. Tandilia

Southern most proterozoic rocks of South America extend in the Tandilia region, suggesting a protracted geologic evolution, mainly within the Transamazonian cycle (2.200 to 1800 Ma). Tandilia crystalline rocks are mainly granitic to tonalitic gneisses, migmatites, amphibolites, and granitic plutons, with scarce schist, marbles and ultramafic rocks. Wide mylonitic belts are conspicuous, and in the central area metavolcanics are also present. Moreover, low grade metamorphic rocks (metacherts, metawaques and metabasitas) were interpreted as a slice of oceanic crust. Tandilia shows a swarm of diabasic dikes, pointing out to a stabilisation event ca.1700 Ma. Transamazonian orogeny was seen as a product of a continent-continent collisional event, as suggested by the leucogranites, thick mylonites belts, ocean floor rocks, and piling up of crust. Towards the southern edge, and under the eopaleozoic cover, a low grade highly deformed metapelitic Brazilian unit appeared. The Tandilia basement is partially covered, towards the west and south-east by three sedimentary units: the neoproterozic Sierras Bayas Group, and the eopaleozoic Cerro Negro and Balcarce Formations. The common feature of this cover is that the deposits have been formed in a shallow epeiric sea. The Sierras Bayas Group (167 m) is composed of four depositional sequences separated by regional unconformities. From base to top is constituted by quartz-arkosic arenites, dolostones and shales, followed by quartz arenites, claystones and dark micritic limestones. The Cerro Negro Formation is a more than 100 m succession of claystones and heterolithic sandstone-claystone interbeds. The Balcarce Formation (100 m) is made up of quartz arenites with subordinated claystones and fine-grained conglomerates.

Abstract: Nowadays approximately fifty million persons are suffering from dementia throughout the world according to the latest statistics of the European Commission (2016). Moreover, every year new 7.7 million instances of this disease are detected. At this moment, Alzheimer’s disease would be the most common mental disorder in terms of world population health, in other words, this disease can signify 70% of all dementia. Even now pharmacological treatments are ineffective. Consequently, utilization of non pharmacological therapies is opening a wide range of possibilities aimed to increase prevention and, at the same time, improvement in living standards of careers and relatives of patients with dementia who are usually overburdened. This presentation contains a review about researches on mindfulness (MF) and its implementation like potentially strategies aimed to treat this disorder

The role of retinal fluid location in atrophy and fibrosis evolution of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration long-term treated in real world

Purpose: To assess the effect of clinical factors on the development and progression of atrophy and fibrosis in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) receiving long-term treatment in the real world. Methods: An ambispective 36-month multicentre study, involving 359 nAMD patients from 17 Spanish hospitals treated according to the Spanish Vitreoretinal Society guidelines, was designed. The influence of demographic and clinical factors, including the presence and location of retinal fluid, on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and progression to atrophy and/or fibrosis were analysed. Results: After 36 months of follow-up and an average of 13.8 anti-VEGF intravitreal injections, the average BCVA gain was +1.5 letters, and atrophy and/or fibrosis were present in 54.8% of nAMD patients (OR = 8.54, 95% CI = 5.85-12.47, compared to baseline). Atrophy was associated with basal intraretinal fluid (IRF) (OR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.09-3.20), whereas basal subretinal fluid (SRF) was associated with a lower rate of atrophy (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.23-0.71) and its progression (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.26-0.75), leading to a slow progression rate (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.14-0.83). Fibrosis development and progression were related to IRF at any visit (p < 0.001). In contrast, 36-month SRF was related to a lower rate of fibrosis (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.29-0.81) and its progression (OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.31-0.81). Conclusion: Atrophy and/or fibrosis were present in 1 of 2 nAMD patients treated for 3 years. Both, especially fibrosis, lead to vision loss. Subretinal fluid (SRF) was associated with good visual outcomes and lower rates of atrophy and fibrosis, whereas IRF yields worse visual results and a higher risk of atrophy and especially fibrosis in routine clinical practice
