Cardiorespiratory optimal point as a submaximal evaluation tool in endurance athletes: an exploratory study

Introduction: The cardiorespiratory optimal point (COP) represents the lowest minute ventilation to oxygen consumption ratio (VE/VO2) and can be estimated during a CPET at submaximal intensity when an exercise test until volitional fatigue is not always advisable (i.e., a conflict zone where you cannot be confident of the security because nearcompetition, off-season, among other). COP’s physiological components have not been wholly described yet. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the determinants of COP in highly trained athletes and its influence on maximum and sub-maximum variables during CPET through principal c omponent analysis (PCA) (explains the dataset’s variance). Methods: Female (n = 9; age, 17.4 ± 3.1 y; maximal VO2 [VO2max]), 46.2 ± 5.9 mL/ kg/min) and male (n = 24; age, 19.7 ± 4.0 y; VO2max, 56.1 ± 7.6 mL/kg/min) athletes performed a CPET to determine the COP, ventilatory threshold 1 (VT1) and 2 (VT2), and VO2max. The PCA was used to determine the relationship between variables and COP, explaining their variance. Results: Our data revealed that females and males displayed different COP values. Indeed, males showed a significant diminished COP compared to the female group (22.6 ± 2.9 vs. 27.2 ±3.4 VE/VO2, respectively); nevertheless, COP was allocated before VT1 in both groups. Discussion: PC analysis revealed that the COP variance was mainly explained (75.6%) by PC1 (expired CO2 at VO2max) and PC2 (VE at VT2), possibly influencing cardiorespiratory efficiency at VO2max and VT2. Our data suggest that COP could be used as a submaximal index to monitor and assess cardiorespiratory system efficiency in endurance athletes. Evidencias de su transformación educacional por los impactos de la formación académica de posgrado

The paper contains the analysis of part of the evidence of the educational transformations experimented by the educational field and by society in the province of Granma, derived from the influence of the post-graduate academic formation received by teachers and professors from educational institutions here. It presents the main actions of the strategy developed under the leadership of the Center of Studies of Education in Granma (CEdEG) Fausto Santisteban Pons of the present-day University of Granma. These achievements are largely the results of the institutional research projects carried out by CEdEG and its competent staff of collaborators. The high quality of the work already has done grants the progressive and stable development of this activity in the years to come, in order to fulfill the demands of the educational improvement process and the institutional evaluation of the university.La ponencia contiene un análisis de algunas de las principales evidencias de transformaciones educacionales acontecidas en el sector educacional y la sociedad granmenses, como resultado de la incidencia de la formación académica de posgrado recibida por los maestros y profesores de sus instituciones educacionales. Se presentan las principales acciones desarrolladas como parte de la estrategia, fundamentalmente lideradas por el Centro de Estudios de Educación de Granma (CEdEG) Fausto Santisteban Pons, de la hoy Universidad de Granma. Los logros alcanzados son resultados, en buena medida, de los proyectos institucionales de investigación desarrollados por el CEdEG y su amplio claustro de colaboradores, unido a la política establecida por las direcciones educacionales implicadas. El trabajo desarrollado propicia la continuidad sostenida y creciente de esta actividad en los próximos años, lo cual constituye una necesidad imperiosa ante las exigencias del proceso de Acreditación universitaria de las diferentes carreras universitarias y del propio proceso de formación doctoral, así como de dar continuidad a la calidad educacional en el territorio como parte y aspiración del actual proceso de Perfeccionamiento Educacional que se lleva a cabo en Cuba.   &nbsp

La comprensión de textos escritos con orientación interactiva en la Escuela Primaria

The written text comprehension constitutes a topic of value for the current pedagogical trends; its importance surpasses the boundaries of the teaching of the mother tongue. Due to the necessity of going in depth on this topic, this investigation has been developed with the aim of proposing activities for the comprehension of written texts with an interactive orientation and a game-like focus for fifth and sixth grades of the primary school. This article, which is the result of the theoretical systematizing on the topic carried out by their authors as part of their doctoral formation, has been evaluated in the educational practice of the primary school with positive results that endorse the effectiveness of the proposed activities. This demonstrates the necessity to transform the teaching-learning process of written text comprehension into an interactive, game-like and independent process.La comprensión de textos escritos constituye un tema de valor para la Pedagogía actual, que trasciende los marcos de la enseñanza de la lengua materna. Por la necesidad de seguir profundizando en este tema se desarrolla esta investigación que tiene como objetivo proponer tareas de aprendizaje para la comprensión de textos escritos con orientación interactiva, desde un enfoque lúdicro e independiente, en escolares del segundo ciclo de la escuela primaria. LA ENSEÑANZA-APRENDIZAJE DE LA COMPRENSIÓN DE TEXTOS ESCRITOS DENTRO DEL PROCESO DE PERFECCIONAMIENTO EDUCACIONAL EN QUINTO Y SEXTO GRADOS DE LA EDUCACIÓN PRIMARIA

The teaching and learning of the text comprehension in the primary educational level has been the object of study and a point of concern to the Cuban educational system. As an example of this system there is its continuous improvement since the triumph of the revolution in 1959. This article is presented it aims at evaluating the process of teaching and learning the written text comprehension through the different stages of the educational improvement within the primary educational level, especially within the fifth and sixth grades. The results of this study allow to know the achievements that have been accomplished during this process and to determine the theoretical and methodological insufficiencies that motivate new studies on this topic and, at the same time, to maintain this process of improvement that is continuous and systematic.La enseñanza-aprendizaje de la comprensión textual en la escuela primaria ha sido objeto de estudio y motivo de preocupación del sistema educativo en nuestro país. Una muestra de ello lo constituye el proceso de perfeccionamiento continuo que se desarrolla a partir del Triunfo de la Revolución en el año 1959. Este artículo tiene como objetivo evaluar el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la comprensión de textos escritos a través de los diferentes momentos que ha atravesado el perfeccionamiento educacional en la escuela primaria, en particular en el segundo ciclo. Los resultados de este estudio permiten conocer los logros que en cuanto a este proceso se han alcanzado y determinar las insuficiencias de carácter teórico-metodológicas que orientan la necesidad de incursionar en nuevos estudios sobre este tema y a la vez mantener el proceso de perfeccionamiento, que es continuo y sistemático

Telecommuting allows employees to do work from home. In a COVID-19 pandemic context, telecommuting has become the main working mode in organizations. This fact represents a challenge for maintaining employee productivity, due to labor pressures and market uncertainty. Two main factors emerge from this analysis: the organization´s capacity to establish adequate communication systems, and the ability of the employee to manage his or her emotions under uncertainty.El teletrabajo busca que los trabajadores puedan realizar sus labores de forma remota. En un contexto de pandemia por la COVID-19, el teletrabajo se ha convertido en la principal modalidad para desarrollar las labores en las organizaciones; y esto representa un desafío para mantener la productividad de los trabajadores, debido a las presiones laborales y la incertidumbre en el mercado del trabajo. Dos factores importantes emergen en este análisis: la habilidad de las organizaciones en establecer sistemas de comunicación adecuados y la capacidad del trabajador de manejar sus emociones en entornos inciertos

Factores asociados a inactividad física en Chile: resultados de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud 2009-2010 = Correlates of physical inactivity: Findings from the Chilean National Health Survey 2009-2010

Background: Physical inactivity is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Aim: To identify factors associated with physical inactivity in Chilean adults. Material and Methods: Participants from the Chilean Health Survey (5,133 individuals) were included in this study. Physical activity was measured using the Global physical activity questionnaire (GPAQ). Physical inactivity was defined as < 600 MET. min.week−1 of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Logistic regression was used to identify correlates of physical inactivity. Results: The main finding of this study were that women (odds ratio (OR): 1.51 [95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.32-1.72]) were more likely to be inactive compared to men and that older adults were more likely to be inactive than their younger or middle age counterparts (OR: 3.06 [95% CI: 2.45-3.82]). Other correlates of physical inactivity were individuals with obesity (OR: 1.43 [95% CI: 1.20-1.70]), diabetes (OR: 1.96 [95% CI: 1.61-2.38]), hypertension (OR: 1.72 [95% CI: 1.50-1.97]), metabolic syndrome (OR: 1.42 [95% IC: 1.18-1.70]), a low education level (OR: 1.26 [95% CI: 1.06-1.49]) and higher levels of sedentary behavior (OR: 2.77 [95% CI: 2.36-3.25]). Conclusions: Women, older people and sedentary subjects with chronic non-transmissible conditions are at higher risk of being physically inactive

Experiencias deportivas, psicosociales y administrativas del club deportivo el Boca de Bello en el año 2019

Las organizaciones del deporte, en este caso, el club deportivo El Boca de Bello, no solo existen de acuerdo con una normatividad y un ejercicio propio de la actividad que promueven. Hay otros campos y/o ciencias sociales, de la salud y hasta administrativas, que complementan y enriquecen la actividad que desarrollan. Son estas las razones que motivaron, precisamente a varios grupos de investigación y a una institución del deporte, a desarrollar un proyecto de investigación, que diera cuenta del aporte inter y multidisciplinario de algunas ciencias para el funcionamiento exitoso de una entidad del sector deportivo, en este caso, un club de fútbol del municipio de Bello (Antioquia). Gestas, grupo de investigación del Politécnico Colombiano Jaime Isaza Cadavid, se encargó de diagnosticar los aspectos administrativos y de gestión del club; Observatos (Tecnológico de Antioquia) y PSIDE (Universidad Católica Luis Amigó), sistematizaron los temas psicosociales, mientras que los profesionales e investigadores del mismo club deportivo El Boca, desarrollaron los aspectos deportivos relacionados con la preparación física, la táctica y estrategia de esa organización. Los resultados obtenidos dieron cuenta de la realidad deportiva, administrativa y psicosocial del club, planteando las debilidades y fortalezas, pero también las oportunidades de mejora que tiene, alejando, de paso, las amenazas que existen en un contexto social, en donde los deportistas tienen bastantes necesidades y muchas problemáticas cotidianas a resolver. Al final, la investigación que acá se socializa, presenta sus conclusiones y recomendaciones, las mismas que podrán ser aprovechas por los clubes y organizaciones deportivas del departamento y del país, en la búsqueda de un trabajo de excelente que los lleve a tener mejores resultados, ubicando sus actividades del lado de la calidad de vida, desarrollo humano y bienestar para la población. Es el aporte científico de tres grupos de investigación y un club deportivo, para nuestra sociedad, en los campos del deporte, la gestión y la psicología.Sports organizations, in this case, the El Boca de Bello sports club, not only exist in accordance with regulations and an exercise proper to the activity they promote. There are other fields and/or social, health and even administrative sciences that complement and enrich the activity they carry out. These are the reasons that motivated, precisely, several research groups and a sports institution, to develop a research project, which would account for the inter and multidisciplinary contribution of some sciences for the successful operation of an entity in the sports sector, in this case, a football club in the municipality of Bello (Antioquia). Gestas, a research group from the Colombian Polytechnic Jaime Isaza Cadavid, was in charge of diagnosing the administrative and management aspects of the club; Observatos (Tecnológico de Antioquia) and PSIDE (Universidad Católica Luis Amigó) systematized psychosocial issues, while professionals and researchers from the same El Boca sports club developed sports aspects related to physical preparation, tactics and strategy of that organization. The results obtained gave an account of the sporting, administrative and psychosocial reality of the club, raising the weaknesses and strengths, but also the opportunities for improvement that it has, Meningitis por criptococo y trombosis venosa cerebral en paciente sicklémica

A 47-year-old woman diagnosed with sickle cell anemia and a vaso-occlusive crisis in the brain was admitted with fever, general malaise and headache, with transient episodes of disorientation. In her evolution, there was a motor defect in the right side, dysarthria and convulsive seizures refractory to therapy. The cranial tomographic study revealed a hypodense image in the left parietal lobe in relation with an infarction, and evidence of contrast enhancement in the turns in the affected area due to cortical vein thrombosis. The patient had a torpid evolution, and died with neurological impairment and septic respiratory symptoms. At necropsy, it was concluded the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis and cerebral venous thrombosis in a sickle cell anemia patient, associated with severe bilateral bacterial bronchopneumonia that lead to her death. Infections in immunocompromised patients, and especially fungal infections, may not be suspected and may not be treated, as occurred with this patient. This fact, and the association with cerebral venous thrombosis, motivated a discussion in the clinicopathological session of the institution. The study of the autopsy is reported, as well as a review of the condition as a way of focusing attention on opportunistic fungal infections. This is another tough battleground for the diagnosis and treatment of patients, in which the main weapon is the proper use of the epidemiological-clinical method in all medical specialties – efforts must be directed that way.Mujer de 47 años de edad con diagnóstico de sicklemia y crisis vaso-oclusiva cerebral que fue ingresada por fiebre, toma del estado general y cefalea, con episodios de desorientación transitoria; en su evolución aparecieron un defecto motor derecho, disartria y episodios convulsivos refractarios a la terapéutica. El estudio tomográfico de cráneo reveló una imagen hipodensa en el lóbulo parietal izquierdo en relación con infarto, así como evidencias de realce de contraste en los giros en el área afectada debido a trombosis de venas corticales. Evolucionó tórpidamente y falleció con deterioro neurológico y cuadro respiratorio séptico. En la necropsia se concluyó: meningitis por Cryptococcus neoformans y trombosis venosa cerebral, asociadas a bronconeumonía bacteriana bilateral severa en paciente sicklémica, todo lo que la conduce a la muerte. Las infecciones en el paciente inmunodeprimido, y en especial las infecciones por hongos, pueden no ser sospechadas ni tratadas, como sucedió en este caso; este hecho, y la asociación con trombosis venosa cerebral, motivaron a discusión en Sesión Clínico-Patológica Institucional. Se presenta el estudio de la autopsia y la revisión de la enfermedad como forma de enfocar la atención en las infecciones micóticas oportunistas, otro duro campo de batalla para el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de los enfermos, cuya arma fundamental es el empleo adecuado del método clínico en todas las especialidades médicas, hacia lo que se deben dirigir los esfuerzos
