SeaWiFS Postlaunch Technical Report Series
This report documents the scientific activities on board the Royal Research Ship (RRS) James Clark Ross (JCR) during the fifth Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT-5), 14 September to 17 October 1997. There are three objectives of the AMT Program. The first is to derive an improved understanding of the links between biogeochemical processes, biogenic gas exchange, air-sea interactions, and the effects on, and responses of, oceanic ecosystems to climate change. The second is to investigate the functional roles of biological particles and processes that influence ocean color in ecosystem dynamics. The Program relates directly to algorithm development and the validation of remotely-sensed observations of ocean color. Because the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) instrument achieved operational status during the cruise (on 18 September), AMT-5 was designated the SeaWiFS Atlantic Characterization Experiment (SeaACE) and was the only major research cruise involved in the validation of SeaWiFS data during the first 100 days of operations. The third objective involved the near-real time reporting of in situ light and pigment observations to the SeaWiFS Project, so the performance of the satellite sensor could be determined
Phytoplankton functional types from Space.
The concept of phytoplankton functional types has emerged as a useful approach to
classifying phytoplankton. It finds many applications in addressing some serious
contemporary issues facing science and society. Its use is not without challenges,
however. As noted earlier, there is no universally-accepted set of functional types,
and the types used have to be carefully selected to suit the particular problem being
addressed. It is important that the sum total of all functional types matches all
phytoplankton under consideration. For example, if in a biogeochemical study,
we classify phytoplankton as silicifiers, calcifiers, DMS-producers and nitrogen fix-
ers, then there is danger that the study may neglect phytoplankton that do not
contribute in any significant way to those functions, but may nevertheless be a
significant contributor to, say primary production. Such considerations often lead
to the adoption of a category of “other phytoplankton” in models, with no clear
defining traits assigned them, but that are nevertheless necessary to close budgets
on phytoplankton processes. Since this group is a collection of all phytoplankton
that defy classification according to a set of traits, it is difficult to model their physi-
ological processes. Our understanding of the diverse functions of phytoplankton is
still growing, and as we recognize more functions, there will be a need to balance the
desire to incorporate the increasing number of functional types in models against
observational challenges of identifying and mapping them adequately. Modelling
approaches to dealing with increasing functional diversity have been proposed,
for example, using the complex adaptive systems theory and system of infinite
diversity, as in the work of Bruggemann and Kooijman (2007). But it is unlikely that
remote-sensing approaches might be able to deal with anything but a few prominent
functional types. As long as these challenges are explicitly addressed, the functional-
type concept should continue to fill a real need to capture, in an economic fashion,
the diversity in phytoplankton, and remote sensing should continue to be a useful
tool to map them.
Remote sensing of phytoplankton functional types is an emerging field, whose
potential is not fully realised, nor its limitations clearly established. In this report,
we provide an overview of progress to date, examine the advantages and limitations
of various methods, and outline suggestions for further development. The overview
provided in this chapter is intended to set the stage for detailed considerations of
remote-sensing applications in later chapters.
In the next chapter, we examine various in situ methods that exist for observing
phytoplankton functional types, and how they relate to remote-sensing techniques.
In the subsequent chapters, we review the theoretical and empirical bases for the
existing and emerging remote-sensing approaches; assess knowledge about the
limitations, assumptions, and likely accuracy or predictive skill of the approaches;
provide some preliminary comparative analyses; and look towards future prospects
with respect to algorithm development, validation studies, and new satellite mis-
sions
Sun protection and sunbathing practices among at-risk family members of patients with melanoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite the increased level of familial risk, research indicates that family members of patients with melanoma engage in relatively low levels of sun protection and high levels of sun exposure. The goal of this study was to evaluate a broad range of demographic, medical, psychological, knowledge, and social influence correlates of sun protection and sunbathing practices among first-degree relatives (FDRs) of melanoma patients and to determine if correlates of sun protection and sunbathing were unique.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We evaluated correlates of sun protection and sunbathing among FDRs of melanoma patients who were at increased disease risk due to low compliance with sun protection and skin surveillance behaviors. Participants (<it>N </it>= 545) completed a phone survey.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>FDRs who reported higher sun protection had a higher education level, lower benefits of sunbathing, greater sunscreen self-efficacy, greater concerns about photo-aging and greater sun protection norms. FDRs who reported higher sunbathing were younger, more likely to be female, endorsed fewer sunscreen barriers, perceived more benefits of sunbathing, had lower image norms for tanness, and endorsed higher sunbathing norms.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Interventions for family members at risk for melanoma might benefit from improving sun protection self-efficacy, reducing perceived sunbathing benefits, and targeting normative influences to sunbathe.</p

The Influence of Technological Knowledge Base and Organizational Structure on Technology Collaboration
This study investigates how an incumbent company's internal characteristics influence its propensity to form learning alliances. A firm may be reluctant to enter a research alliance when it has deep knowledge in a certain technological field due to concerns about knowledge leakage and the low possibility of being able to learn much from collaboration. On the contrary, when the firm has a broad knowledge base, it may have high propensity to enter alliances due to more self-confidence in its ability to learn fast from partners. In addition, we argue that when a firm concentrates its R&D at a central location, this neutralizes the positive and negative influences of the two knowledge base features on alliance formation. We tested and found support for the hypotheses using a database of 1550 alliances undertaken by 78 large incumbent pharmaceutical, chemical, and agro-food companies active in the biotechnology sector during 1993–2002
Assessment of a primary and tertiary care integrated management model for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Spain continues to present challenges, and problems are exacerbated when there is a lack of coordinated follow-up between levels of care. This paper sets out the protocol for assessing the impact of an integrated management model for the care of patients with COPD. The new model will be evaluated in terms of 1) improvement in the rational utilization of health-care services and 2) benefits reflected in improved health status and quality of life for patients.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>A quasi-experimental study of the effectiveness of a COPD management model called COPD PROCESS. The patients in the study cohorts will be residents of neighborhoods served by two referral hospitals in Barcelona, Spain. One area comprises the intervention group (n = 32,248 patients) and the other the control group (n = 32,114 patients). The study will include pre- and post-intervention assessment 18 months after the program goes into effect. Analyses will be on two datasets: clinical and administrative data available for all patients, and clinical assessment information for a cohort of 440 patients sampled randomly from the intervention and control areas. The main endpoints will be the hospitalization rates in the two health-care areas and quality-of-life measures in the two cohorts.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The COPD PROCESS model foresees the integrated multidisciplinary management of interventions at different levels of the health-care system through coordinated routine clinical practice. It will put into practice diagnostic and treatment procedures that are based on current evidence, multidisciplinary consensus, and efficient use of available resources. Care pathways in this model are defined in terms of patient characteristics, level of disease severity and the presence or absence of exacerbation. The protocol covers the full range of care from primary prevention to treatment of complex cases.</p
