This paper analyses the role of Carreño de Miranda as art advisor of Juan Gaspar Enríquez de Cabrera, 10th admiral of Castile and one of the greatest noble collectors in 17th century Spain. The admiral trusted the Court painter to assert the originality of the paintings sent from Venice by the marquis of Villagarcía. Thanks to the correspondence he maintained with this agent we have located an Aeneas and Anchises by Schiavone which passed from the admiral’s collection to the imperial collection in Vienna. The same happened with two portraits by Van Dyck, now at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which we have identified through a sketch by Carreño

The marriage of Louis XIV of France and Maria Theresa of Spain sanctioned the end of the Franco-Spanish war (1635-1659). The terms of the peace treaty and the marriage agreement were the result of a long negotiation which conclude with the extraordinary embassy sent to Madrid, led by Antoine III Gramont, marshal of France and duke of Gramont. In this article, we examine different aspects of the entry, reception and regalement of the French embassy at the court of Philip IV. For this purpose, we have considered an extensive corpus of textual sources (accounts, diaries, memories, poetical compositions and archival documents) that supply information about those events. We have focused our attention on the role played by the nobility -in particular, by Juan Gaspar Enríquez de Cabrera, 10th Admiral of Castile-, considering at the same time the relevant function of the material culture in early modern diplomacy.

The present study aimed to analyze the differences in family assets in adolescents, men and women, by level of alcohol consumption. For this, a non-probabilistic sample of 454 high school students was selected, with a mean age of 15.9 years old (SD = 1.07); of which 49.1% were men and 50.9% were women. Three dimensions of the Parental Practice Scale (Andrade & Betancourt, 2008) were used to assess family assets, which assesses the support and supervision of both parents; in addition, the scale house rules of Sánchez-Xicotencatl (2015) was used. To measure alcohol consumption, four indicators were used to evaluate the behavior’s presence, the age of onset, as well as frequency and quantity (Andrade & Betancourt, 2008). The results showed that 57% of men and 53.8% of women reported that they had consumed alcohol. Regarding the differences in family assets by the categories of the alcohol consumption indicator, the findings showed significant differences house rules (in both men and women), and in the men’s case differences were found in maternal supervision and in women, differences were found in the support-supervision of the father. The results allow us to have elements of the role of the assets evaluated in the alcohol consumption in adolescent population, as well as the differential effect by the sex of the adolescents

A Quasi-Birth-Death model for functional split in 5G controllers

It is broadly accepted that network function virtualization will play a key role to meet the stringent and heterogeneous requirements of 5G networks. Although fully centralized approaches were initially proposed, they may impose unfeasible requirements over fronthaul links. Consequently, flexible functional split solutions are being fostered, where a central controller adapts the centralization level to current circumstances. In spite of the growing interest in this type of solutions, most of existing works focus on real implementation, while little attention has been paid so far to performance modeling. In this paper we propose a Markov Chain based controller model, which boils down to a Quasi-Birth-Death process. Under reasonable assumptions, this model provides expected values of buffer occupancy and the time frames would spend in the controller. In this sense, it aims to be a tool to support the allocation of computational resources of the virtualized entities. We validate the proposed model by comparing its results with those obtained by simulation, evincing an almost perfect match between both approaches. This work has been funded by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional, MINECO-FEDER) by means of the project FIERCE: Future Internet Enabled Resilient smart CitiEs (RTI2018-093475-AI00)

Audit logs are a critical component in today’s enterprise business systems as they provide several benefits such as records transparency and integrity and security of sensitive information by creating a layer of evidential support. However, current implementations are vulnerable to attacks on data integrity or availability. This paper presents a Blockchain-based audit trail mechanism that leverages the security features of Blockchain to enable secure and reliable audit trails and to address the aforementioned vulnerabilities. The architecture design and specific implementation are described in detail, resulting in a real prototype of a reliable, secure, and user-friendly audit trail mechanism. This research was funded by the European Commission, grant number 872570 (H2020 KYKLOS 4.0 project)

Understanding the performance of flexible functional split in 5G vRAN controllers: A Markov Chain-based model

    Get PDF
We study Flexible Functional Split functionality of 5G vRAN controllers in 5G networks. We propose an innovative model, based on a Markov Chain, which can be used to characterize their performance. We consider both infinite and finite-buffer controllers. In the former, frames would not be lost (provided the system works in a stable regime), and we thus focus on the time frames stay at the controller. For the finite-buffer controller, there might be losses, and we analyze the trade-off between time at the controller (which might hinder the stringent delay requirements of 5G services), and loss probability. Matrix-geometric techniques are used to resolve the corresponding Quasi-Birth-Death process. The validity of the proposed model is assessed by means of an extensive experiment campaign carried out over an ad-hoc eventdriven simulator, which is also used to broaden the analysis, considering different service rate distributions, as well as the variability of the studied performance indicators. The results show that the proposed model can be effectively exploited to tackle the dimensioning of these systems, as it sheds light on how their configuration impacts the expected delay and loss rate.

Non-Adherence to Malaria Chemo-Prophylaxis in Travelers: Mind to the Care Gap!

    Get PDF
Background: Travelers are at risk of contracting malaria when moving to endemic areas. Yet, despite effective malaria chemoprophylaxis, imported cases of malaria still occur worldwide. Indeed, some studies have shown a varied adherence level; consequently, a traveler care gap could occur. Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out in 2017 to evaluate the rate of malaria chemoprophylaxis adherence among Spanish travelers. Results: A post-travel questionnaire was completed by 402 travelers to malaria endemic areas that were prescribed chemoprophylaxis: 67 (16.7%) did not take any dose of chemoprophylaxis and 41 (10.2%) had not even carried it while travelling abroad. The adherence of chemoprophylaxis was 68,7% of travelers, being statistically different according to travel duration, onset of adverse events and type of drug prescribed. The non-adherent travelers reported not continuing with administration mainly because of forgetfulness, fear of side effects and low perceived risk because itinerary changes. Regarding the onset of the medication's secondary adverse events, one in three (35.2%) reported at least one, being more frequent among patients that took mefloquine than atovaquone-proguanil (p=0.01). The main adverse events reported by chemoprophylaxis users were gastrointestinal or sleeping disorders. Conclusions: The suboptimal compliance of chemoprophylaxis is a major lost opportunity to achieve malaria prevention, so it is an important contributor to the traveler care gap

Stand-by emergency treatment (SBET) of malaria in Spanish travellers: a cohort study

Background: Among strategies for malaria prevention, stand-by emergency treatment (SBET) is a possible approach, but scarce evidences exists investigating travellers' adherence and behaviours toward its use; therefore, the presented study aimed to determine travellers' compliance toward the SBET when prescribed in travel clinics. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed at the Travel Health Clinic of the Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, Barcelona, Spain, during 2017. The research was planned on survey-based design, using pre- and post-travel questionnaires. Results: In the study period, of 5436 subjects who attended the HUB Travel Medicine Clinic, 145 travellers to malariaendemic areas were prescribed SBET, and all patients agreed to participate in the study by completing the pre-travel questionnaire. Approximately half the participants were women (n=75, 51.7%), and the median age of all travellers was 29 years (range 13-57), mainly travelling to South-East Asia (n=69, 47.6%), with Indonesia and the Philippines as the most popular destinations. The length of travels had a median duration of 29 days (range 10-213). Of the recruited participants, 98 replied to the online post-travel survey, reaching a response rate of 67.6%. A total of 62.2% of travellers to which SBET was prescribed did not buy and carry drugs while travelling abroad. No participants' baseline or travel characteristic was shown to be signifcantly associated (p>0.05) with this behaviour. Four women (4.1%) experienced fever and self-administered SBET, without seeking medical attention. No malaria cases were observed. Conclusions: This cohort study addressed travellers' adherence and behaviour toward SBET, highlighting an incorrect use of the emergency treatment in case of presumptive malaria symptoms. This should be taken into account during pre-travel consultation, since the success of this strategy for malaria prevention depends on travellers' strong adher‑ ence to it

Effect of Oral Nutritional Supplements with Sucromalt and Isomaltulose versus Standard Formula on Glycaemic Index, Entero-Insular Axis Peptides and Subjective Appetite in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomised Cross-Over Study

Oral diabetes-specific nutritional supplements (ONS-D) induce favourable postprandial responses in subjects with type 2 diabetes (DM2), but they have not been correlated yet with incretin release and subjective appetite (SA). This randomised, double-blind, cross-over study compared postprandial e ects of ONS-D with isomaltulose and sucromalt versus standard formula (ET) on glycaemic index (GI), insulin, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and SA in 16 individuals with DM2. After overnight fasting, subjects consumed a portion of supplements containing 25 g of carbohydrates or reference food. Blood samples were collected at baseline and at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 min; and SA sensations were assessed by a visual analogue scale on separate days. Glycaemic index values were low for ONS-D and intermediate for ET (p < 0.001). The insulin area under the curve (AUC0–180 min) (p < 0.02) and GIP AUC (p < 0.02) were lower after ONS-D and higher GLP-1 AUC when compared with ET (p < 0.05). Subjective appetite AUC was greater after ET than ONS-D (p < 0.05). Interactions between hormones, hunger, fullness and GI were found, but not within the ratings of SA; isomaltulose and sucromalt may have influenced these factor
