Quantitative definition of neurobehavior, vision, hearing and brain volumes in macaques congenitally exposed to Zika virus
Congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure results in a spectrum of disease ranging from severe birth defects to delayed onset neurodevelopmental deficits. ZIKV-related neuropathogenesis, predictors of birth defects, and neurodevelopmental deficits are not well defined in people. Here we assess the methodological and statistical feasibility of a congenital ZIKV exposure macaque model for identifying infant neurobehavior and brain abnormalities that may underlie neurodevelopmental deficits. We inoculated five pregnant macaques with ZIKV and mock-inoculated one macaque in the first trimester. Following birth, growth, ocular structure/function, brain structure, hearing, histopathology, and neurobehavior were quantitatively assessed during the first week of life. We identified the typical pregnancy outcomes of congenital ZIKV infection, with fetal demise and placental abnormalities. We estimated sample sizes needed to define differences between groups and demonstrated that future studies quantifying brain region volumes, retinal structure, hearing, and visual pathway function require a sample size of 14 animals per group (14 ZIKV, 14 control) to detect statistically significant differences in at least half of the infant exam parameters. Establishing the parameters for future studies of neurodevelopmental outcomes following congenital ZIKV exposure in macaques is essential for robust and rigorous experimental design

Scabies: Application of the Novel Identify-Isolate-Inform Tool for Detection and Management
Scabies is a highly contagious, globally prevalent, parasitic skin infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, also known as the itch mite. There have been outbreaks not only in the developing world, but also in the developed world among refugees and asylum seekers. Once infested with scabies mites, symptomatic patients, as well as asymptomatic carriers, quickly spread the disease through direct skin-to-skin contact. Typically, symptoms of scabies are characterized by an erythematous, papular, pruritic rash associated with burrows. Treatment of scabies involves using topical or systemic scabicides and treating secondary bacterial infections, if present. Given the prevalence and contagiousness of scabies, measures to prevent its spread are essential. Through application of the novel Identify-Isolate-Inform (3I) Tool, emergency medical providers can readily identify risk factors for exposure and important symptoms of the disease, thus limiting its spread through prompt scabicide therapy; isolate the patient until after treatment; and inform local public health authorities and hospital infection prevention, when appropriate. Ultimately, these three actions can aid public health in controlling the transmission of scabies cases, thus ensuring the protection of the general public from this highly contagious skin infestation
Hemodynamic and Echocardiographic Assessment of Left Ventricle Recovery with Left Ventricular Assist Devices: Do We Explant?
Introduction: Explantation of left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) after left ventricular (LV) recovery is estimated to occur in 1-2% of cases. Herein, we present a case of hemodynamic and echocardiographic assessment of LV recovery during outflow graft balloon occlusion leading to LVAD explantation.
Case Report: A 56-year-old female with medical history of systolic heart failure due to non-ischemic cardiomyopathy with LVEF 25%. She underwent an urgent HeartMate 3 LVAD implant after an admission for cardiogenic shock. Post LVAD course was complicated by driveline infection. History was notable for admissions due to low-flow alarms in the setting of dehydration. On echocardiogram, progressive LVEF improvement was noted although with suboptimal images. CT angiography did not demonstrate any occlusion of the cannulas. Right heart catheterization showed stable cardiac index despite minimal flow on LVAD. Cardiopulmonary testing was favorable. After multi-disciplinary discussion, patient underwent LVAD wean study in the cath lab under hemodynamic and transesophageal echo (TEE) guidance with therapeutic anticoagulation. LVAD was turned off for 10 minutes with outflow graft occluded by Armada 14 mm x 20 cm peripheral balloon. Wiring of the outflow graft from aorta and balloon occlusion were visualized by TEE (Figure). The left and right ventricular function were similar to baseline with no change in mitral regurgitation. Cardiac index was normal (Figure). Patient subsequently underwent successful LVAD explant. She is doing well with NYHA class I symptoms and LVEF 45-50% noted upon 3-months follow-up LVAD explantation is a feasible option in LV recovery after appropriate hemodynamic and echocardiographic assessment. TEE is an essential tool, especially in patients with suboptimal windows. Outflow graft balloon occlusion can be used if there is concern about falsely poor results related to backflow or ongoing LVAD support at low speed leading to falsely improved results
Unhatched eggs represent the invisible fraction in two wild bird populations
Prenatal mortality is typically overlooked in population studies, which biases evolutionary inference by confounding selection and inheritance. Birds represent an opportunity to include this ‘invisible fraction’ if each egg contains a zygote, but whether hatching failure is caused by fertilization failure versus prenatal mortality is largely unknown. We quantified fertilization failure rates in two bird species that are popular systems for studying evolutionary dynamics and found that overwhelming majorities (99.9%) of laid eggs were fertilized. These systems thus present opportunities to eliminate the invisible fraction from life-history data
Antiinflammatory therapy with canakinumab for atherosclerotic disease
BACKGROUND: Experimental and clinical data suggest that reducing inflammation without affecting lipid levels may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Yet, the inflammatory hypothesis of atherothrombosis has remained unproved. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial of canakinumab, a therapeutic monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin-1β, involving 10,061 patients with previous myocardial infarction and a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level of 2 mg or more per liter. The trial compared three doses of canakinumab (50 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg, administered subcutaneously every 3 months) with placebo. The primary efficacy end point was nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or cardiovascular death. RESULTS: At 48 months, the median reduction from baseline in the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level was 26 percentage points greater in the group that received the 50-mg dose of canakinumab, 37 percentage points greater in the 150-mg group, and 41 percentage points greater in the 300-mg group than in the placebo group. Canakinumab did not reduce lipid levels from baseline. At a median follow-up of 3.7 years, the incidence rate for the primary end point was 4.50 events per 100 person-years in the placebo group, 4.11 events per 100 person-years in the 50-mg group, 3.86 events per 100 person-years in the 150-mg group, and 3.90 events per 100 person-years in the 300-mg group. The hazard ratios as compared with placebo were as follows: in the 50-mg group, 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80 to 1.07; P=0.30); in the 150-mg group, 0.85 (95% CI, 0.74 to 0.98; P=0.021); and in the 300-mg group, 0.86 (95% CI, 0.75 to 0.99; P=0.031). The 150-mg dose, but not the other doses, met the prespecified multiplicity-adjusted threshold for statistical significance for the primary end point and the secondary end point that additionally included hospitalization for unstable angina that led to urgent revascularization (hazard ratio vs. placebo, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.95; P=0.005). Canakinumab was associated with a higher incidence of fatal infection than was placebo. There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio for all canakinumab doses vs. placebo, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.06; P=0.31). CONCLUSIONS: Antiinflammatory therapy targeting the interleukin-1β innate immunity pathway with canakinumab at a dose of 150 mg every 3 months led to a significantly lower rate of recurrent cardiovascular events than placebo, independent of lipid-level lowering. Reusable photocatalytic optical fibers for underground, deep-sea, and turbid water remediation
An approach for underground, deep, and turbid water remediation is presented based on optical fibers with a photocatalytic coating. Thus, photocatalytic TiO2 P25 nanoparticles immobilized in a poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) matrix are coated on polymeric optical fibers (POFs) and the photocatalytic performance of the system is assessed under artificial sunlight. To the best of our knowledge, poly(methyl methacrylate)-POF coated with TiO2/PVDF and the reusability of any type of POF for photocatalytic applications are not previously reported. The photocatalytic efficiency of the
hybrid material in the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and its reusability are evaluated here. It is shown that 50 w/w% of TiO2 P25 achieves a degradation of 95% after 72 h under artificial sunlight and a reusability of three times leads to a loss of activity inferior to 11%. The efficient removal of ciprofloxacin and the stability of the POF coated with TiO2 P25 successfully demonstrate its suitability in the degradation of pollutants with potential application in regions with low light illumination, as in underground and deep water.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Microwave and terahertz dielectric properties of MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics
The THz dielectric properties of MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics are reported. The ceramics were prepared via a solid-state reaction route and the sintering conditions were optimized to obtain ceramics with high permittivity and low loss in the terahertz frequency domain. The amount of impurities (MgTi2O5) and grain size increased with increasing sintering temperature. The dielectric properties improved with increasing density, and the best terahertz dielectric performance was obtained at 1260 °C, with a permittivity of 17.73 and loss of 3.07×10−3. Ceramics sintered above 1260 °C showed a sharp increase in loss, which is ascribed to an increase in the impurity content
Synthesis and Characterization of Hybrid Materials Consisting of n-octadecyltriethoxysilane by Using n-Hexadecylamine as Surfactant and Q0 and T0 Cross-Linkers
Novel hybrid xerogel materials were synthesized by a sol-gel procedure. n-octadecyltriethoxysilane was co-condensed with and without different cross-linkers using Q0 and T0 mono-functionalized organosilanes in the presence of n-hexadecylamine with different hydroxyl silica functional groups at the surface. These polymer networks have shown new properties, for example, a high degree of cross-linking and hydrolysis. Two different synthesis steps were carried out: simple self-assembly followed by sol-gel transition and precipitation of homogenous sols. Due to the lack of solubility of these materials, the compositions of the new materials were determined by infrared spectroscopy, 13C and 29Si CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy

Let T be a Hom-finite triangulated Krull-Schmidt category over a field k.
Inspired by a definition of Koenig and Liu, we say that a family S of pairwise
orthogonal objects in T with trivial endomorphism rings is a simple-minded
system if its closure under extensions is all of T. We construct torsion pairs
in T associated to any subset X of a simple-minded system S, and use these to
define left and right mutations of S relative to X. When T has a Serre functor
\nu, and S and X are invariant under \nu[1], we show that these mutations are
again simple-minded systems. We are particularly interested in the case where T
is the stable module category of a self-injective algebra \Lambda. In this
case, our mutation procedure parallels that introduced by Koenig and Yang for
simple-minded collections in the derived category of \Lambda. It follows that
the mutation of the set of simple \Lambda-modules relative to X yields the
images of the simple \Gamma-modules under a stable equivalence between \Gamma\
