    Simple model of bouncing ball dynamics. Displacement of the limiter assumed as a cubic function of time

    Nonlinear dynamics of a bouncing ball moving vertically in a gravitational field and colliding with a moving limiter is considered and the Poincare map, describing evolution from an impact to the next impact, is described. Displacement of the limiter is assumed as periodic, cubic function of time. Due to simplicity of this function analytical computations are possible. Several dynamical modes, such as fixed points, 2 - cycles and chaotic bands are studied analytically and numerically. It is shown that chaotic bands are created from fixed points after first period doubling in a corner-type bifurcation. Equation for the time of the next impact is solved exactly for the case of two subsequent impacts occurring in the same period of limiter's motion making analysis of chattering possible.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, presented at the DSTA 2011 conference, Lodz, Polan

    Performance evaluation and optimisation of post combustion CO2 capture processes for natural gas applications at pilot scale via a verified rate-based model

    CO2 absorption based on chemical reactions is one of the most promising technologies for post combustion CO2 capture (PCC). There have been significant efforts to develop energy efficient and cost effective PCC processes. Given that PCC is still maturing as a technology, there will be a continuing need for pilot scale facilities to support process optimisation, especially in terms of energy efficiency. Pilot scale PCC facilities, which are usually orders of magnitude smaller than those that will be used in future in large scale fossil power plants, make it possible to study details of the PCC process at an affordable scale. However, it is essential that pilot scale studies provide credible data, if this is to be used with confidence to envisage the future large-scale use of the PCC process, especially in terms of energy consumption. The present work therefore establishes and experimentally verifies (using a representative pilot plant as a case study) procedures for analysing the energy performance of a pilot scale amine based CO2 capture plants, focusing on natural gas fired applications. The research critically assesses the pilot plant’s current energy performance, and proposes new operating conditions and system modifications by which the pilot plant will operate more efficiently in terms of energy consumption. The methodology developed to assess and improve the energy performance of the PCC process is applicable, with appropriate inputs, to other plants of this type that employs aqueous 30 wt. % monoethanolamine (MEA) solution as the solvent. A rate based model of the post combustion CO2 capture process using an aqueous solution of 30 wt. % MEA as the solvent was developed in Aspen Plus® V.8.4, and verified using the results of experimental studies carried out using the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre / Pilot-scale Advanced Capture Technology (UKCCSRC/PACT) pilot plant, as a representative pilot-scale capture plant, and employed for parametric sensitivity studies. Several parameters have been identified and varied over a given range of lean solvent CO2 loading to evaluate their effects on the pilot plant energy requirement. The optimum lean solvent CO2 loading was determined using the total equivalent work concept. Results show, for a given packing material type, the majority of energy savings can be realised by optimising the stripper operating pressure. To some extent, a higher solvent temperature at the stripper inlet has the potential to reduce the regeneration energy requirement. A more efficient packing material, can greatly improve the pilot plant overall energy and mass transfer efficiency

    A comparison of robust polynomial fitting, global geopotential model and spectral analysis for regional–residual gravity field separation in the Doñana National Park (Spain)

    Doñana National Park is a protected area of approximately 500 km2 located on the SW coast of Spain with singular and interesting ecological and geological features. A gravimetric survey is presented where L&R gravity metres were used in the gravimetric observations with GPS and high-precision levelling positioning. Bouguer gravity anomalies were computed and least squares prediction was used for gross-error detection. Robust polynomial fitting, the recent EGM2008 global geopotential model (complete to degree and order 2159), and spectral analysis were tested for regional–residual gravity field separation. A detailed description of the gravimetric characteristics of the Doñana National Park is presented and the values of residual gravity anomalies were correlated with geological features, where the use of the EGM2008 global geopotential model has revealed an interesting tool for regional–residual gravity field separation. Finally, the interpretation of the results is justified by the well-known geological aspects of the park, but some modifications in the boundaries of the different geological features are needed in order to fit the modelled gravity with the residual gravity anomalies in the two cross-sections analysed.The studies presented here were part of CICYT (Spanish Research Directorate) research project nos.     Percolating granular superconductors

    We investigate diamagnetic fluctuations in percolating granular superconductors. Granular superconductors are known to have a rich phase diagram including normal, superconducting and spin glass phases. Focusing on the normal-superconducting and the normal-spin glass transition at low temperatures, we study he diamagnetic susceptibility χ(1)\chi^{(1)} and the mean square fluctuations of the total magnetic moment χ(2)\chi^{(2)} of large clusters. Our work is based on a random Josephson network model that we analyze with the powerful methods of renormalized field theory. We investigate the structural properties of the Feynman diagrams contributing to the renormalization of χ(1)\chi^{(1)} and χ(2)\chi^{(2)}. This allows us to determine the critical behavior of χ(1)\chi^{(1)} and χ(2)\chi^{(2)} to arbitrary order in perturbation theory.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure

    Optimizing colorectal cancer screening by race and sex

    BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) risk varies by race and sex. This study, 1 of 2 microsimulation analyses to inform the 2018 American Cancer Society CRC screening guideline, explored the influence of race and sex on optimal CRC screening strategies. METHODS: Two Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network microsimulation models, informed by US incidence data, were used to evaluate a variety of screening methods, ages to start and stop, and intervals for 4 demographic subgroups (black and white males and females) under 2 scenarios for the projected lifetime CRC risk for 40-year-olds: 1) assuming that risk had remained stable since the early screening era and 2) assuming that risk had increased proportionally to observed incidence trends under the age of 40 years. Model-based screening recommendations were based on the predicted level of benefit (life-years gained) and burden (required number of colonoscopies), the incremental burden-to-benefit ratio, and the relative efficiency in comparison with strategies with similar burdens. RESULTS: When lifetime CRC risk was assumed to be stable over time, the models differed in the recommended age to start screening for whites (45 vs 50 years) but consistently recommended screening from the age of 45 years for blacks. When CRC risk was assumed to be increased, the models recommended starting at the age of 45 years, regardless of race and sex. Strategies recommended under both scenarios included colonoscopy every 10 or 15 years, annual fecal immunochemical testing, and computed tomographic colonography every 5 years through the age of 75 years. CONCLUSIONS: Microsimulation modeling suggests that CRC screening should be considered from the age of 45 years for blacks and for whites if the lifetime risk has increased proportionally to the incidence for younger adults

    Introduction: Offspring of parents with severe mental illness have an increased risk of developing mental illnesses themselves. Familial high risk cohorts give a unique opportunity for studying the development over time, both the illness that the individual is predisposed for and any other diagnoses. These studies can also increase our knowledge of etiology of severe mental illness and provide knowledge about the underlying mechanisms before illness develops. Interventions targeting this group are often proposed due to the potential possibility of prevention, but evidence about timing and content is lacking. Method: A large, representative cohort of 522 7-year old children born to parents with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or controls was established based on Danish registers. A comprehensive baseline assessment including neurocognition, motor functioning, psychopathology, home environment, sociodemographic data, and genetic information was conducted from January 1, 2013 to January 31, 2016. This study is the first follow-up of the cohort, carried out when the children turn 11 years of age. By assessing the cohort at this age, we will evaluate the children twice before puberty. All instruments have been selected with a longitudinal perspective and most of them are identical to those used at inclusion into the study at age 7. A diagnostic interview, motor tests, and a large cognitive battery are conducted along with home visits and information from teachers. This time we examine the children's brains by magnetic resonance scans and electroencephalograms. Measures of physical activity and sleep are captured by a chip placed on the body, while we obtain biological assays by collecting blood samples from the children. Discussion: Findings from the VIA 7 study revealed large variations across domains between children born to parents with schizophrenia, bipolar and controls, respectively. This study will further determine whether the children at familial risk reveal delayed developmental courses, but catch up at age 11, or whether the discrepancies between the groups have grown even larger. We will compare subgroups within each of the familial high risk groups in order to investigate aspects of resilience. Data on brain structure and physical parameters will add a neurobiological dimension to the study

    Burden and risk factors for Pseudomonas aeruginosa community-acquired pneumonia:a Multinational Point Prevalence Study of Hospitalised Patients

    Pseudornonas aeruginosa is a challenging bacterium to treat due to its intrinsic resistance to the antibiotics used most frequently in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Data about the global burden and risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP are limited. We assessed the multinational burden and specific risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP. We enrolled 3193 patients in 54 countries with confirmed diagnosis of CAP who underwent microbiological testing at admission. Prevalence was calculated according to the identification of P. aeruginosa. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa-CAP. The prevalence of P. aeruginosa and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa-CAP was 4.2% and 2.0%, respectively. The rate of P. aeruginosa CAP in patients with prior infection/colonisation due to P. aeruginosa and at least one of the three independently associated chronic lung diseases (i.e. tracheostomy, bronchiectasis and/or very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) was 67%. In contrast, the rate of P. aeruginosa-CAP was 2% in patients without prior P. aeruginosa infection/colonisation and none of the selected chronic lung diseases. The multinational prevalence of P. aeruginosa-CAP is low. The risk factors identified in this study may guide healthcare professionals in deciding empirical antibiotic coverage for CAP patients
