    Data Fingerprinting -- Identifying Files and Tables with Hashing Schemes

    Master's thesis in Computer scienceINTRODUCTION: Although hash functions are nothing new, these are not limited to cryptographic purposes. One important field is data fingerprinting. Here, the purpose is to generate a digest which serves as a fingerprint (or a license plate) that uniquely identifies a file. More recently, fuzzy fingerprinting schemes — which will scrap the avalanche effect in favour of detecting local changes — has hit the spotlight. The main purpose of this project is to find ways to classify text tables, and discover where potential changes or inconsitencies have happened. METHODS: Large parts of this report can be considered applied discrete mathematics — and finite fields and combinatorics have played an important part. Rabin’s fingerprinting scheme was tested extensively and compared against existing cryptographic algorithms, CRC and FNV. Moreover, a self-designed fuzzy hashing algorithm with the preliminary name No-Frills Hash has been created and tested against Nilsimsa and Spamsum. NFHash is based on Mersenne primes, and uses a sliding window to create a fuzzy hash. Futhermore, the usefullness of lookup tables (with partial seeds) were also explored. The fuzzy hashing algorithm has also been combined with a k-NN classifier to get an overview over it’s ability to classify files. In addition to NFHash, Bloom filters combined with Merkle Trees have been the most important part of this report. This combination will allow a user to see where a change was made, despite the fact that hash functions are one-way. Large parts of this project has dealt with the study of other open-source libraries and applications, such as Cassandra and SSDeep — as well as how bitcoins work. Optimizations have played a crucial role as well; different approaches to a problem might lead to the same solution, but resource consumption can be very different. RESULTS: The results have shown that the Merkle Tree-based approach can track changes to a table very quickly and efficiently, due to it being conservative when it comes to CPU resources. Moreover, the self-designed algorithm NFHash also does well in terms of file classification when it is coupled with a k-NN classifyer. CONCLUSION: Hash functions refers to a very diverse set of algorithms, and not just algorithms that serve a limited purpose. Fuzzy Fingerprinting Schemes can still be considered to be at their infant stage, but a lot has still happened the last ten years. This project has introduced two new ways to create and compare hashes that can be compared to similar, yet not necessarily identical files — or to detect if (and to what extent) a file was changed.     Ã…rsliste 2000An environmental risk assessment has been performed for the product Rescon Resfoam 1K-M, a semisolid polyurethane foam, using PEC/PNEC approach. This evaluation has not identified any risk to the environment through the professional use of Rescon Resfoam 1K-M. Most of the compounds associated with the product Rescon Resfoam 1K-M are documented to be of low toxicity to aquatic organisms. PNEC (Predicted No Effect Concentration) was established from acute toxicity values applying an assessment factor of 1000. PEC (Predicted Environmental Concentration) was estimated by constructing a worst case scenario based on very conservative postulations. As no risk was identified in this very conservative worst case scenario, it is not necessary to refine the exposure model. refine the exposure model. The polyurethane foam produced is an inert compound, which will persist in the environment indefinitly.     Demonstration of non-linear model predictive control for optimal flexible operation of a CO2 capture plant

    Due to the penetration of renewable intermittent energy, there is a need for coal and natural gas power plants to operate flexibly with variable load. This has resulted in an increasing interest in flexible and operational issues in the capture plant as well. In the present paper a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) system was tested at the Tiller pilot plant in Norway. The most important part of the NMPC software is the dynamic model representing the absorber/desorber plant. A previous first principle (mechanistic) dynamic model of the plant using MEA was modified for a solvent of AMP and piperazine, and then successfully verified by step response tests. The NMPC, which was set up to minimize the deviation from the capture rate setpoint and minimize the specific reboiler duty was then tested in a closed loop with large changes in flue gas flow and CO2 composition. Even for gas rate variations of more than 300% (110–340 m3/h) and CO2 concentration changes of 30%, the dynamic response was satisfactory. A test with frequently occurring constraints on the reboiler duty revealed a need for an extension to include direct control of the lean loading. Test of setpoint changes in total CO2 recovery showed that the control system managed to rapidly change from one capture rate to another with a time constant of typically 10 min. This might be used in a second layer of optimization, a dynamic real-time optimizer, that minimizes the capture costs during a longer horizon considering varying energy prices.publishedVersio

    Tight Coupling of Metabolic Oscillations and Intracellular Water Dynamics in <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</i>

    We detected very strong coupling between the oscillating concentration of ATP and the dynamics of intracellular water during glycolysis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Our results indicate that: i) dipolar relaxation of intracellular water is heterogeneous within the cell and different from dilute conditions, ii) water dipolar relaxation oscillates with glycolysis and in phase with ATP concentration, iii) this phenomenon is scale-invariant from the subcellular to the ensemble of synchronized cells and, iv) the periodicity of both glycolytic oscillations and dipolar relaxation are equally affected by D2O in a dose-dependent manner. These results offer a new insight into the coupling of an emergent intensive physicochemical property of the cell, i.e. cell-wide water dipolar relaxation, and a central metabolite (ATP) produced by a robustly oscillating metabolic process
