    Event shape engineering with ALICE

    Get PDF
The strong fluctuations in the initial energy density of heavy-ion collisions allow an efficient selection of events corresponding to a specific initial geometry. For such "shape engineered events", the elliptic flow coefficient, v2v_2, of unidentified charged particles, pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at \snn = 2.76 TeV is measured by the ALICE collaboration. v2v_2 obtained with the event plane method at mid-rapidity, η<0.8|\eta|<0.8, is reported for different collision centralities as a function of transverse momentum, \pt, out to \pt=20 GeV/cc. The measured v2v_2 for the shape engineered events is significantly larger or smaller than the average which demonstrates the ability to experimentally select events with the desired shape of the initial spatial asymmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings for Quark Matter 2012, Washington D.C., August 13-18, 201

IMPROVEMENT OF LIFE INSURANCE-RELATED ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS WITHIN THE NEW ECONOMY

This paper outlines the life insurance-related accounting operations, in consideration to the harmonization of the Romanian legislation with the International Financial Reporting Standards. The main accounting operations specific to the life insurance sector include: accounting of revenues and expenses derived from life insurance operations (recording the premiums written, recording the payment of insurance premiums, termination of insurance policy, recording the compensation expenses), accounting of operations related to the setting up and using the technical reserves for life insurance (general principles, accounting of premium reserves, accounting of loss reserve, accounting of the reserve for benefits and discounts, accounting of mathematical reserve, accounting of other life insurance-related technical reserves).revenues and expenses; life insurance; technical reserves for life insurance; reported/not reported loss reserve; reserve for benefits and discounts; mathematical reserve

Dumping and Double Crossing: The (In)Effectiveness of Cost-Based Trade Policy Under Incomplete Information

    Get PDF
We argue that the rise of antidumping protection and the proliferation of voluntary export restraints are fundamentally inter-related. We show that both can be explained by a cost-based definition of dumping when the domestic government has incomplete information about the foreign firm's costs. Given that its costs are only imperfectly observed and knowing the government's desire to offer greater protection against competitively priced imports, efficient foreign firms will voluntarily restrain their exports prior to the antidumping investigation. In turn, the VER distorts the government's perception of the foreign firm's efficiency and often leads to undesirably high duties regardless of the foreign firm's efficiency. The clumsy way that duties are levied benefits domestic firms, which explains the popularity of cost-based complaints.

Less-Networked Speaker Communities and Digital Language Archives

    Get PDF
Fieldwork, description, and preservation of research results are often seen as endpoints of language documentation projects. Although archives are doing their best to ensure that source communities can ultimately gain access to the language materials they produce, little is being done to facilitate their involvement in the ongoing curation of those materials. Enhancing and extending such involvement will significantly increase both the scholarly value of documented materials and its impact in source communities. Using the situations of rural Papua New Guinea and Cameroon as model cases, this project will bring together an international group of scholars, technical experts, and community members for a two day conference to intensively explore appropriate “bridging” technologies and make recommendations to help digital language archives overcome fundamental obstacles to maintaining direct, ongoing relationships with archive stakeholders who reside in less-networked communities

Student Evaluation, Basic Element for Quality Improvement in the Higher Education

The student is the person who, through certain native or gained qualities, assimilates the information and knowledge provided by the Professor. He is the main beneficiary of the educational system, because the main educational effects are registered at his level: the social effects (the improvement of the individual’s inter-human relations inside a society, the healthier behaviour of the educated persons etc.) and the economical effects (especially materialized as supplementary incomes for the higher-educated persons). Therefore, we can say that the student, together with the teacher, occupies a central position in the educational system.education; evaluation; student; tests.

The issue of healthcare economics analysis should be started from the concept and the particularities within this important area of economic life - social. In the present conditions of limited resources and the needs that continue to multiply and diversify, in the context of stiff competition in any field, the issues of competitiveness and rationalization of any human activities becomes very important. In what follows the authors will examine some significant aspects regarding the healthcare economics, such as healthcare costs, ethics and objects of the healthcare economics, contributions for the fundamentals and development of the healthcare economics etc.healthcare economics, public healthcare, performance, quality, standards of living.
