    School-visit by pre-service teachers: An insider view on students’ experiences and staff’s perceptions

    In this paper we describe and interpret students’ experiences and staff’s perceptions of a school-visit project for pre-service teachers.  Our developmental intention was to ascertain the worth of the intervention with a view to improve practice.  As coordinators of the project, we were well placed to undertake a close-up study by giving a strong role to both fourth-year students and lecturers as evaluators of the teaching and learning context created by the intervention.  Drawing on Paulo Freire’s conception of naïve consciousness, we explore the gap between students’ experiences and staff’s perceptions.  Using illuminative evaluation, we provide support that the students were stimulated to become socially concerned, albeit not critically, by means of a once-off experience of unequal schooling contexts during their first year.  Staff, however, indicated an awareness of what needs to be done to integrate the students’ initial experiences, and there were no real examples that they had drawn on the project to reinforce these experiences through their classroom pedagogies.  We conclude the article by highlighting critical dialogue as a prerequisite for curricular reform

    Isolation of an anthelmintic compound from Leucosidea sericea

    The leaves of Leucosidea sericea (Rosaceae) are used medicinally by some indigenous South African people as a vermifuge and astringent. No information on the biological activity and phytochemistry of the plant could be found in the literature. Bioassay-guided fractionation was used to identify the active compound. Partial purification of the petroleum ether extract of the leaves and flowers was followed by fractionation using chromatographic methods. This process yielded the Phloroglucinol derivatives, aspidinol and desaspidinol, which were previously reported to be present in a Dryopteris species. Aspidinol was further isolated and structurally elucidated. This is the first report of the presence of these compounds in Leucosidea sericea. The disk diffusion method used in our study, indicated that the plant has antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans

    Wave scattering from self-affine surfaces

    Electromagnetic wave scattering from a perfectly reflecting self-affine surface is considered. Within the framework of the Kirchhoff approximation, we show that the scattering cross section can be exactly written as a function of the scattering angle via a centered symmetric Levy distribution for general roughness amplitude, Hurst exponent and wavelength of the incident wave. The amplitude of the specular peak, its width and its position are discussed as well as the power law decrease (with scattering angle) of the scattering cross section.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages including 2 figures.     Ecologically relevant measures of tolerance to potentially lethal temperatures

    The acute thermal tolerance of ectotherms has been measured in a variety of ways; these include assays where organisms are shifted abruptly to stressful temperatures and assays where organisms experience temperatures that are ramped more slowly to stressful levels. Ramping assays are thought to be more relevant to natural conditions where sudden abrupt shifts are unlikely to occur often, but it has been argued that thermal limits established under ramping conditions are underestimates of true thermal limits because stresses due to starvation and/or desiccation can arise under ramping. These confounding effects might also impact the variance and heritability of thermal tolerance. We argue here that ramping assays are useful in capturing aspects of ecological relevance even though there is potential for confounding effects of other stresses that can also influence thermal limits in nature. Moreover, we show that the levels of desiccation and starvation experienced by ectotherms in ramping assays will often be minor unless the assays involve small animals and last for many hours. Empirical data illustrate that the combined effects of food and humidity on thermal limits under ramping and sudden shifts to stressful conditions are unpredictable; in Drosophila melanogaster the presence of food decreased rather than increased thermal limits, whereas in Ceratitis capitata they had little impact. The literature provides examples where thermal limits are increased under ramping presumably because of the potential for physiological changes leading to acclimation. It is unclear whether heritabilities and population differentiation will necessarily be lower under ramping because of confounding effects. Although it is important to clearly define experimental methods, particularly when undertaking comparative assessments, and to understand potential confounding effects, thermotolerance assays based on ramping remain an important tool for understanding and predicting species responses to environmental change. An important area for further development is to identify the impact of rates of temperature change under field and laboratory conditions

    The three different helicity states of W bosons produced in the reaction e+ e- -> W+ W- -> l nu q q~ at LEP are studied using leptonic and hadronic W decays. Data at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt s = 183-209 GeV are used to measure the polarisation of W bosons, and its dependence on the W boson production angle. The fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured to be 0.218 \pm 0.027 \pm 0.016 where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation

    Bose-Einstein Correlations of Neutral and Charged Pions in Hadronic Z Decays

    Bose-Einstein correlations of both neutral and like-sign charged pion pairs are measured in a sample of 2 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in the four-momentum difference range 300 MeV < Q < 2 GeV. The radius of the neutral pion source is found to be smaller than that of charged pions. This result is in qualitative agreement with the string fragmentation model

    Z Boson Pair-Production at LEP

    Events stemming from the pair-production of Z bosons in e^+e^- collisions are studied using 217.4 pb^-1 of data collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies from 200 GeV up to 209 GeV. The special case of events with b quarks is also investigated. Combining these events with those collected at lower centre-of-mass energies, the Standard Model predictions for the production mechanism are verified. In addition, limits are set on anomalous couplings of neutral gauge bosons and on effects of extra space dimensions

    Neutral-Current Four-Fermion Production in e+e- Interactions at LEP

    Neutral-current four-fermion production, e+e- -> ffff is studied in 0.7/fb of data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies root(s)=183-209GeV. Four final states are considered: qqvv, qqll, llll and llvv, where l denotes either an electron or a muon. Their cross sections are measured and found to agree with the Standard Model predictions. In addition, the e+e- -> Zgamma* -> ffff process is studied and its total cross section at the average centre-of-mass energy 196.6GeV is found to be 0.29 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.03 pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.22 pb. Finally, the mass spectra of the qqll final states are analysed to search for the possible production of a new neutral heavy particle, for which no evidence is found

    Study of the e+e- -> Ze+e- process at LEP

    The cross section of the process e+e- -> Ze+e is measured with 0.7fb^-1 of data collected with the L3 detector at LEP. Decays of the Z boson into quarks and muons are considered at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 183GeV up to 209GeV. The measurements are found to agree with Standard Model predictions, achieving a precision of about 10% for the hadronic channel
