Purpose: To compare the intraocular pressure- (IOP-) lowering efficacy of fixed combinations travoprost 0.004%/timolol 0.5% and dorzolamide 2%/timolol 0.5% in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. Methods: In this prospective, multicenter, double-masked, randomized clinical trial, 319 qualifying patients received either travoprost/timolol once daily in the morning (n = 157) or dorzolamide/timolol twice daily (n = 162). IOP was assessed morning and evening at 2 and 6 weeks. The primary outcome measure was mean diurnal IOP. Results: Baseline mean IOP values were similar between groups. Mean pooled diurnal IOP was significantly lower in the travoprost/timolol group (16.5 mmHg Âą 0.23) than in the dorzolamide/timolol group (17.3 mmHg Âą 0.23; P = 0.011). Mean IOP was significantly lower in the travoprost/timolol group compared to the dorzolamide/timolol group at the 9 AM time point both at Week 2 (P = 0.006) and Week 6 (P = 0.002). The travoprost/timolol combination produced mean IOP reductions from baseline of 35.3% to 38.5%, while the dorzolamide/timolol combination produced mean IOP reductions from baseline of 32.5% to 34.5%. Conclusions: The fixed combination travoprost 0.004%/timolol 0.5% dosed once daily in the morning demonstrated superior mean diurnal IOP-lowering efficacy compared to dorzolamide 2%/timolol 0.5% dosed twice daily in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.publishersversionPeer reviewe

Examining the association of life course neurocognitive ability with real-world functioning in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders

There is considerable variability in neurocognitive functioning within schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and neurocognitive performance ranges from severe global impairment to normative performance. Few investigations of neurocognitive clusters have considered the degree to which deterioration relative to premorbid neurocognitive abilities is related to key illness characteristics. Moreover, while neurocognition and community functioning are strongly related, understanding of the sources of variability in the association between these two domains is also limited; it is unknown what proportion of participants would over-perform or under-perform the level of functioning expected based on current neurocognitive performance vs. lifelong attainment. This study examined data from 954 outpatients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders across three previous studies. Neurocognition, community functioning, and symptoms were assessed. Neurocognitive subgroups were created based on current neurocognition, estimated premorbid IQ, and degree of deterioration from premorbid using z-score cut-offs; functional subgroups were created with cluster analysis based on the Specific Level of Functioning Scale and current neurocognition. The sample was neurocognitively heterogeneous; 65% displayed current neurocognitive impairment and 84% experienced some level of deterioration. Thirty percent of our sample was relatively higher functioning despite significant neurocognitive impairment. Individuals with better community functioning, regardless of neurocognitive performance, had lower symptom severity compared to those with worse functioning. These results highlight the variability in neurocognition and its role in functioning. Understanding individual differences in neurocognitive and functional profiles and the interaction between prior and current cognitive functioning can guide individualized treatment and selection of participants for clinical treatment studies

Effectiveness of pulsed radio frequency in seed quality improvement of vegetable plant species

The biggest problem, in ecological vegetable seed production, is low germination mostly caused by high seed infection with fungi and a shortage of effective biological agents eliminating pathogens. Therefore, pro-ecological methods of seed quality enhancement are being searched, increasing the profitability of seed production by improving the seed sowing value. The aim of the work was to evaluate the effectiveness of pulsed radio frequency (PRF) on seed quality of selected vegetable cultivars. The obtained results from conducted research in laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions indicate a protective effect of PRF treatment by reduction of beetroot, lettuce and garden dill seed-borne fungi, and the improvement of their health status and seed germination. Pre-sowing application of PRF resulted in 60-80% reduction of seed infestation with fungi, depending on the plant species. This treatment improved the dynamics of seed germination, plant emergence, growth, and increased chlorophyll content and gas exchange in leaves. The most beneficial results were obtained in beetroot, in which the problem of seed production is associated with high seed infestation with mycoflora and the presence of germination inhibitors in the seed coat. The results indicate the high efficiency of the applied PRF and its usefulness in ecological and integrated seed production.Plant science

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
