Case report: intra-tendinous ganglion of the anterior cruciate ligament in a young footballer
A 20-year-old male medical student and keen rugby player presented with a 12-month history of progressively worsening right knee pain and stiffness with no history of trauma. Clinical examination revealed effusion and posterior knee pain exacerbated by end range movement and an extension lag of 15 degrees. Physiotherapy to improve the range of motion proved unsuccessful. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the ACL was grossly thickened and displaced by material reported as mucoid in nature. There were also areas of focally high signal in relation to its tibial attachment and intra osseous small cysts. Arthroscopic examination revealed a ganglion related to the tibial attachment of the ACL and gross thickening and discoloration of the ACL. Biopsies were taken showing foci of mucoid degeneration in the ACL. A large intra-ACL mass of brownish coloured tissue was excised arthroscopically. Already at 2 weeks follow up the patient had greatly improved range of movement and was pain free. However, upon returning to rugby, joint instability was noticed and a tear of the ACL was confirmed.
This rare clinical condition can be diagnosed with MRI and arthroscopic debridement effectively relieves symptoms. This case report illustrates that augmentation or reconstruction may end up being the definitive treatment for athletes. It may also offer some support to the argument that mucoid degeneration and ganglion cyst formation share a similar pathogenesis to intra-osseous cyst formation
G313.3+00.3: A New Planetary Nebula discovered by the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Spitzer Space Telescope
We present a new planetary nebula, first identified in images from the
Australia Telescope Compact Array, although not recognized at that time. Recent
observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope during the GLIMPSE Legacy program
have rediscovered the object. The high-resolution radio and infrared images
enable the identification of the central star or its wind, the recognition of
the radio emission as thermal, and the probable presence of polycylic aromatic
hydrocarbons in and around the source. These lead to the conclusion that
G313.3+00.3 is a planetary nebula. This object is of particular interest
because it was discovered solely through radio and mid-infrared imaging,
without any optical (or near-infrared) confirmation, and acts as a proof of
concept for the discovery of many more highly extinguished planetary nebulae.
G313.3+00.3 is well-resolved by both the instruments with which it was
identified, and suffers extreme reddening due to its location in the

The symple choice algorythm for estimating of parametersof network protetion prioroties in analitical hierarchic process
Humans depend on services provided by ecosystems, and how services are affected by climate change is increasingly studied. Few studies, however, address changes likely to affect services from seminatural ecosystems. We analyzed ecosystem goods and services in natural and seminatural systems, specifically how they are expected to change as a result of projected climate change during the 21st century. We selected terrestrial and freshwater systems in northernmost Europe, where climate is anticipated to change more than the global average, and identified likely changes in ecosystem services and their societal consequences. We did this by assembling experts from ecology, social science, and cultural geography in workshops, and we also performed a literature review. Results show that most ecosystem services are affected by multiple factors, often acting in opposite directions. Out of 14 services considered, 8 are expected to increase or remain relatively unchanged in supply, and 6 are expected to decrease. Although we do not predict collapse or disappearance of any of the investigated services, the effects of climate change in conjunction with potential economical and societal changes may exceed the adaptive capacity of societies. This may result in societal reorganization and changes in ways that ecosystems are used. Significant uncertainties and knowledge gaps in the forecast make specific conclusions about societal responses to safeguard human well-being questionable. Adapting to changes in ecosystem services will therefore require consideration of uncertainties and complexities in both social and ecological responses. The scenarios presented here provide a framework for future studies exploring such issues
Update on LIPID MAPS classification, nomenclature, and shorthand notation for MS-derived lipid structures
A comprehensive and standardized system to report lipid structures analyzed by mass spectrometry is essentialfor the communication and storage of lipidomics data. Herein, an update on both the LIPID MAPSclassification system and shorthand notation of lipid structures is presented for lipid categories Fatty Acyls(FA), Glycerolipids (GL), Glycerophospholipids (GP), Sphingolipids (SP), and Sterols (ST). With its majorchanges, i.e. annotation of ring double bond equivalents and number of oxygens, the updated shorthandnotation facilitates reporting of newly delineated oxygenated lipid species as well. For standardized reportingin lipidomics, the hierarchical architecture of shorthand notation reflects the diverse structural resolutionpowers provided by mass spectrometric assays. Moreover, shorthand notation is expanded beyond mammalianphyla to lipids from plant and yeast phyla. Finally, annotation of atoms is included for the use of stableisotope-labelled compounds in metabolic labelling experiments or as internal standards
Does a SLAP lesion affect shoulder muscle recruitment as measured by EMG activity during a rugby tackle?
Background: The study objective was to assess the influence of a SLAP lesion on onset of EMG activity in shoulder muscles during a front on rugby football tackle within professional rugby players.
Methods: Mixed cross-sectional study evaluating between and within group differences in EMG onset times. Testing was carried out within the physiotherapy department of a university sports medicine clinic. The test group consisted of 7 players with clinically diagnosed SLAP lesions, later verified on arthroscopy. The reference group consisted of 15 uninjured and full time professional rugby players from within the same playing squad. Controlled tackles were performed against a tackle dummy. Onset of EMG activity was assessed from surface EMG of Pectorialis Major, Biceps Brachii, Latissimus Dorsi, Serratus Anterior and Infraspinatus muscles relative to time of impact. Analysis of differences in activation timing between muscles and limbs (injured versus non-injured side and non injured side versus matched reference group).
Results: Serratus Anterior was activated prior to all other muscles in all (P = 0.001-0.03) subjects. In the SLAP
injured shoulder Biceps was activated later than in the non-injured side. Onset times of all muscles of the noninjured shoulder in the injured player were consistently earlier compared with the reference group. Whereas, within
the injured shoulder, all muscle activation timings were later than in the reference group.
Conclusions: This study shows that in shoulders with a SLAP lesion there is a trend towards delay in activation time of Biceps and other muscles with the exception of an associated earlier onset of activation of Serratus anterior, possibly due to a coping strategy to protect glenohumeral stability and thoraco-scapular stability. This
trend was not statistically significant in all cases

Protein kinase Cepsilon is important for migration of neuroblastoma cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Migration is important for the metastatic capacity and thus for the malignancy of cancer cells. There is limited knowledge on regulatory factors that promote the migration of neuroblastoma cells. This study investigates the hypothesis that protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms regulate neuroblastoma cell motility.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>PKC isoforms were downregulated with siRNA or modulated with activators and inhibitors. Migration was analyzed with scratch and transwell assays. Protein phosphorylation and expression levels were measured with Western blot.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Stimulation with 12-<it>O</it>-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) induced migration of SK-N-BE(2)C neuroblastoma cells. Treatment with the general protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor GF109203X and the inhibitor of classical isoforms Gö6976 inhibited migration while an inhibitor of PKCβ isoforms did not have an effect. Downregulation of PKCε, but not of PKCα or PKCδ, with siRNA led to a suppression of both basal and TPA-stimulated migration. Experiments using PD98059 and LY294002, inhibitors of the Erk and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathways, respectively, showed that PI3K is not necessary for TPA-induced migration. The Erk pathway might be involved in TPA-induced migration but not in migration driven by PKCε. TPA induced phosphorylation of the PKC substrate myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate (MARCKS) which was suppressed by the PKC inhibitors. Treatment with siRNA oligonucleotides against different PKC isoforms before stimulation with TPA did not influence the phosphorylation of MARCKS.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PKCε is important for migration of SK-N-BE(2)C neuroblastoma cells. Neither the Erk pathway nor MARCKS are critical downstream targets of PKCε but they may be involved in TPA-mediated migration.</p
The ischemic preconditioning effect of adenosine in patients with ischemic heart disease
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p><it>In vivo </it>and <it>in vitro </it>evidence suggests that adenosine and its agonists play key roles in the process of ischemic preconditioning. The effects of low-dose adenosine infusion on ischemic preconditioning have not been thoroughly studied in humans.</p> <p>Aims</p> <p>We hypothesised that a low-dose adenosine infusion could reduce the ischemic burden evoked by physical exercise and improve the regional left ventricular (LV) systolic function.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>We studied nine severely symptomatic male patients with severe coronary artery disease. Myocardial ischemia was induced by exercise on two separate occasions and quantified by Tissue Doppler Echocardiography. Prior to the exercise test, intravenous low-dose adenosine or placebo was infused over ten minutes according to a randomized, double blind, cross-over protocol. The LV walls were defined as ischemic if a reduction, no increment, or an increment of < 15% in peak systolic velocity (PSV) was observed during maximal exercise compared to the baseline values observed prior to placebo-infusion. Otherwise, the LV walls were defined as non-ischemic.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>PSV increased from baseline to maximal exercise in non-ischemic walls both during placebo (<it>P </it>= 0.0001) and low-dose adenosine infusion (<it>P </it>= 0.0009). However, in the ischemic walls, PSV increased only during low-dose adenosine infusion <it>(P </it>= 0.001), while no changes in PSV occurred during placebo infusion (<it>P </it>= NS).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Low-dose adenosine infusion reduced the ischemic burden and improved LV regional systolic function in the ischemic walls of patients with exercise-induced myocardial ischemia, confirming that adenosine is a potential preconditioning agent in humans.</p
Skyrmionic order and magnetically induced polarization change in lacunar spinel compounds GaVS and GaMoS: comparative theoretical study
We show how low-energy electronic models derived from the first-principles
electronic structure calculations can help to rationalize the magnetic
properties of two lacunar spinel compounds GaM4S8 with light (M=V) and heavy
(M=Mo) transition-metal elements, which are responsible for different
spin-orbit interaction strength. In the model, each magnetic lattice point was
associated with the M4S4 molecule, and the model itself was formulated in the
basis of molecular Wannier functions constructed for three magnetic t2 bands.
The effects of rhombohedral distortion, spin-orbit interaction, band filling,
and the screening of Coulomb interactions in the t2 bands are discussed in
details. The electronic model is further treated in the superexchange
approximation, which allows us to derive an effective spin model for the energy
and electric polarization () depending on the relative orientation of spins
in the bonds, and study the properties of this model by means of classical
Monte Carlo simulations with the emphasis on the possible formation of the
skyrmionic phase. While isotropic exchange interactions clearly dominate in
GaV4S8, all types of interactions -- isotropic, antisymmetric, and symmetric
anisotropic -- are comparable in the case of GaMo4S8. Particularly, large
uniaxial exchange anisotropy has a profound effect on the properties of
GaMo4S8. On the one hand, it raises the Curie temperature by opening a gap in
the spectrum of magnon excitations. On the other hand, it strongly affects the
skyrmionic phase by playing the role of a molecular field, which facilitates
the formation of skyrmions, but makes them relatively insensitive to the
external magnetic field in the large part of the phase diagram. We predict
reversal of the magnetic dependence of in the case of GaMo4S8 caused by the
reversal of direction of the rhombohedral distortion.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
