    New, nearby bright southern ultracool dwarfs

    We report the discovery of twenty-one hitherto unknown bright southern ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the range M7 to L5.5, together with new observations of a further three late M dwarfs previously confirmed. Three more objects are already identified in the literature as high proper motion stars;we derive their spectral types for the first time. All objects were selected from the 2MASS All Sky and SuperCOSMOS point source databases on the basis of their optical/near-infrared colours, JJ-band magnitudes and proper motions. Low resolution (R \sim 1000) JHJH spectroscopy with the ESO/NTT SOFI spectrograph has confirmed the ultracool nature of 24 targets, out of a total of 25 candidates observed. Spectral types are derived by direct comparison with template objects and compared to results from H2_2O and FeH indices. We also report the discovery of one binary, as revealed by SOFI acquisition imaging; spectra were taken for both components. The spectral types of the two components are L2 and L4 and the distance \sim 19 pc. Spectroscopic distances and transverse velocities are derived for the sample. Two \sim L5 objects lie only \sim 10 pc distant. Such nearby objects are excellent targets for further study to derive their parallaxes and to search for fainter, later companions with AO and/or methane imaging.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted to MNRA

    Small Changes in the Primary Structure of Transportan 10 Alter the Thermodynamics and Kinetics of its Interaction with Phospholipid Vesicles

    ABSTRACT: The kinetics and thermodynamics of binding of transportan 10 (tp10) and four of its variants to phospholipid vesicles, and the kinetics of peptide-induced dye efflux, were compared. Tp10 is a 21-residue, amphipathic, cationic, cell-penetrating peptide similar to helical antimicrobial peptides. The tp10 variants examined include amidated and free peptides, and replacements of tyrosine by tryptophan. Carboxy-terminal amidation or substitution of tryptophan for tyrosine enhance binding and activity. The Gibbs energies of peptide binding to membranes determined experimentally and calculated from the interfacial hydrophobicity scale are in good agreement. The Gibbs energy for insertion into the bilayer core was calculated using hydrophobicity scales of residue transfer from water to octanol and to the membrane/ water interface. Peptide-induced efflux becomes faster as the Gibbs energies for binding and insertion of the tp10 variants decrease. If anionic lipids are included, binding and efflux rate increase, as expected because all tp10 variants are cationic and an electrostatic component is added. Whether the most important effect of peptide amidation is the change in charge or an enhancement of helical structure, however, still needs to be established. Nevertheless, it is clear that the changes in efflux rate reflect the differences in the thermodynamics of binding and insertion of the free and amidated peptide groups.     The Parallel Complexity of Growth Models

    This paper investigates the parallel complexity of several non-equilibrium growth models. Invasion percolation, Eden growth, ballistic deposition and solid-on-solid growth are all seemingly highly sequential processes that yield self-similar or self-affine random clusters. Nonetheless, we present fast parallel randomized algorithms for generating these clusters. The running times of the algorithms scale as O(log2N)O(\log^2 N), where NN is the system size, and the number of processors required scale as a polynomial in NN. The algorithms are based on fast parallel procedures for finding minimum weight paths; they illuminate the close connection between growth models and self-avoiding paths in random environments. In addition to their potential practical value, our algorithms serve to classify these growth models as less complex than other growth models, such as diffusion-limited aggregation, for which fast parallel algorithms probably do not exist.Comment: 20 pages, latex, submitted to J.     Natural images from the birthplace of the human eye

    Here we introduce a database of calibrated natural images publicly available through an easy-to-use web interface. Using a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera, we acquired about 5000 six-megapixel images of Okavango Delta of Botswana, a tropical savanna habitat similar to where the human eye is thought to have evolved. Some sequences of images were captured unsystematically while following a baboon troop, while others were designed to vary a single parameter such as aperture, object distance, time of day or position on the horizon. Images are available in the raw RGB format and in grayscale. Images are also available in units relevant to the physiology of human cone photoreceptors, where pixel values represent the expected number of photoisomerizations per second for cones sensitive to long (L), medium (M) and short (S) wavelengths.     Micrometeoroid Events in LISA Pathfinder

    The zodiacal dust complex, a population of dust and small particles that pervades the Solar System, provides important insight into the formation and dynamics of planets, comets, asteroids, and other bodies. Here we present a new set of data obtained using a novel technique: direct measurements of momentum transfer to a spacecraft from individual particle impacts. This technique is made possible by the extreme precision of the instruments flown on the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft, a technology demonstrator for a future space-based gravitational wave observatory that operated near the first Sun-Earth Lagrange point from early 2016 through Summer of 2017. Using a simple model of the impacts and knowledge of the control system, we show that it is possible to detect impacts and measure properties such as the transferred momentum (related to the particle's mass and velocity), direction of travel, and location of impact on the spacecraft. In this paper, we present the results of a systematic search for impacts during 4348 hours of Pathfinder data. We report a total of 54 candidates with momenta ranging from 0.2μNs\,\mu\textrm{Ns} to 230μNs\,\mu\textrm{Ns}. We furthermore make a comparison of these candidates with models of micrometeoroid populations in the inner solar system including those resulting from Jupiter-family comets, Oort-cloud comets, Hailey-type comets, and Asteroids. We find that our measured population is consistent with a population dominated by Jupiter-family comets with some evidence for a smaller contribution from Hailey-type comets.     Crystal of GaV4S8, a multiferroic system hosting a Neel-type skyrmion lattice phase, has been investigated by polarized Raman and IR spectroscopy above and below the ferroelectric phase transition. Counts of the observed IR and Raman-active modes belonging to distinct irreducible representations agree quite well with group-theory predictions. Phonon spectra are assigned and interpreted with the aid of ab initio calculations of the phonon spectra in the ferroelectric phase.     Finding benchmark brown dwarfs to probe the IMF as a function of time

    Using a simulated disk brown dwarf (BD) population, we find that new large area infrared surveys are expected to identify enough BDs covering wide enough mass--age ranges to potentially measure the mass function down to ~0.03Mo, and the BD formation history out to 10 Gyr, at a level capable of establishing if BD formation follows star formation. We suggest these capabilities are best realised by spectroscopic calibration of BD properties (Teff, g and [M/H]) which, when combined with a measured luminosity and an evolutionary model can give BD mass and age relatively independent of BD atmosphere models. Such calibration requires an empirical understanding of how BD spectra are affected by variations in these properties, and thus the identification and study of "benchmark BDs" whose age and composition can be established independently. We identify the best sources of benchmark BDs as young open cluster members, moving group members, and wide (>1000AU) BD companions to both subgiant stars and high mass white dwarfs (WDs). We have used 2MASS to measure a wide L dwarf companion fraction of 2.7(+0.7/-0.5)%, which equates to a BD companion fraction of 34(+9/-6)% for an alpha~1 companion mass function. Using this value we simulate populations of wide BD binaries, and estimate that 80(+21/-14) subgiant--BD binaries, and 50(+13/-10) benchmark WD--BD binaries could be identified using current and new facilities. The WD--BD binaries should all be identifiable using the Large Area Survey component of UKIDSS combined with Sloan. Discovery of the subgiant--BD binaries will require a NIR imaging campaign around a large (~900) sample of Hipparcos subgiants. If identified, spectral studies of these benchmark brown dwarfs could reveal the spectral sensitivities across the Teff, g and [M/H] space probed by new surveys.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Wild Boar Tissue Levels of Cadmium, Lead and Mercury in Seven Regions of Continental Croatia

    Concentrations of cadmium, mercury and lead were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry in the kidney and muscle of free-living wild boar (n = 169) from hunting grounds in seven counties of continental Croatia. Mean levels of metals (mg/kg) in muscle and kidney of boars ranged as follows: Cd: 0.005–0.016 and 0.866–4.58, Pb: 0.033–0.15 and 0.036–0.441, Hg: 0.004–0.012 and 0.04–0.152. In all seven regions, concentrations exceeded the permitted values (muscle and kidney mg/kg: cadmium 0.05/1; lead 0.1/0.5; mercury 0.03/0.1) in 13.6% and 71.6% of samples (muscle and kidney, respectively) for cadmium; 13.6% and 8.9% for lead; 19.5% and 2.4% for mercury. There were significant differences among the regions. Vukovar-Srijem and Virovitica-Podravina Counties were highly contaminated with cadmium, Sisak-Moslavina and Virovitica-Podravina Counties with lead and Brod-Posavina County had highest mercury concentrations.
