    Software Performance Engineering (SPE) provides a systematic, quantitative approach to constructing software systems that meet performance objectives. It prescribes ways to build performance into new systems rather than try to fix them later. Performance is a pervasive quality of software systems; everything affects it, from the software itself to all underlying layers, such as operating system, middleware, hardware, communication networks, etc. Software Perfor - mance Engineering encompasses efforts to describe and improve performance, with two distinct approaches: an earlycycle predictive model-based approach, and a late-cycle measurement-based approach. Current progress and future trends within these two approaches are described, with a tendency (and a need) for them to converge, in order to cover the entire development cycle

    Providing packages of relevant ATM information: An ontology-based approach

    ATM information providers publish reports and notifications of different types using standardized information exchange models. For a typical information user, e.g., an aircraft pilot, only a fraction of the published information is relevant for a particular task. Filtering out irrelevant information from different information sources is in itself a challenging task, yet it is only a first step in providing relevant information, the challenges concerning maintenance, auditability, availability, integration, comprehensibility, and traceability. This paper presents the Semantic Container approach, which employs ontology-based faceted information filtering and allows for the packaging of filtered information and associated metadata in semantic containers, thus facilitating reuse of filtered information at different levels. The paper formally defines an abstract model of ontology-based information filtering and the structure of semantic containers, their composition, versioning, discovery, and replicated physical allocation. The paper further discusses different usage scenarios, the role of semantic containers in SWIM, an architecture for a semantic container management system, as well as a proof-of-concept prototype.     Algorithms for advance bandwidth reservation in media production networks

    Media production generally requires many geographically distributed actors (e.g., production houses, broadcasters, advertisers) to exchange huge amounts of raw video and audio data. Traditional distribution techniques, such as dedicated point-to-point optical links, are highly inefficient in terms of installation time and cost. To improve efficiency, shared media production networks that connect all involved actors over a large geographical area, are currently being deployed. The traffic in such networks is often predictable, as the timing and bandwidth requirements of data transfers are generally known hours or even days in advance. As such, the use of advance bandwidth reservation (AR) can greatly increase resource utilization and cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the bandwidth scheduling problem, which takes into account the specific characteristics of media production networks, is presented. Two novel optimization algorithms based on this model are thoroughly evaluated and compared by means of in-depth simulation results

    Emulation platform design for multimedia applications over vehicular networks

    Safety applications seems that will be decisive for a successful introduction to the automotive market for the vehicular networks. However, another kind of applications could be very helpful in order to reach the maximum number of equipped vehicles after market introduction, because can attract a greater number of users and facilitate a vehicular infrastructure investment because vehicular communication must provide business opportunities for Internet service providers to generate revenue. One of these kind of applications is live video streaming over vehicular networks. Video streaming is an attractive feature to many applications, such as emergency live video transmission, video on demand services, road-side video advertisement broadcasting and inter-vehicle video conversation. Test and evaluate implementations in a real testbed environment could be very costly and di cult in this kind of networks. Simulations are still commonly used as a first step in any development for vehicular networks research. Therefore, to test this kind of applications an emulation platform for multimedia applications over vehicular networks is presented in this article. We’ve studied the performance of video streaming services in a infrastructure environment over a highways taking special account in the losses that produces handovers during the communication caused by the network mobility

    Cyber resilience meta-modelling: The railway communication case study

    Recent times have demonstrated how much the modern critical infrastructures (e.g., energy, essential services, people and goods transportation) depend from the global communication networks. However, in the current Cyber-Physical World convergence, sophisticated attacks to the cyber layer can provoke severe damages to both physical structures and the operations of infrastructure affecting not only its functionality and safety, but also triggering cascade effects in other systems because of the tight interdependence of the systems that characterises the modern society. Hence, critical infrastructure must integrate the current cyber-security approach based on risk avoidance with a broader perspective provided by the emerging cyber-resilience paradigm. Cyber resilience is aimed as a way absorb the consequences of these attacks and to recover the functionality quickly and safely through adaptation. Several high-level frameworks and conceptualisations have been proposed but a formal definition capable of translating cyber resilience into an operational tool for decision makers considering all aspects of such a multifaceted concept is still missing. To this end, the present paper aims at providing an operational formalisation for cyber resilience starting from the Cyber Resilience Ontology presented in a previous work using model-driven principles. A domain model is defined to cope with the different aspects and “resilience-assurance” processes that it can be valid in various application domains. In this respect, an application case based on critical transportation communications systems, namely the railway communication system, is provided to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach and to identify future improvements

    Extended Fault Taxonomy of SOA-Based Systems

    Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is considered as a standard for enterprise software development. The main characteristics of SOA are dynamic discovery and composition of software services in a heterogeneous environment. These properties pose newer challenges in fault management of SOA-based systems (SBS). A proper understanding of different faults in an SBS is very necessary for effective fault handling. A comprehensive three-fold fault taxonomy is presented here that covers distributed, SOA specific and non-functional faults in a holistic manner. A comprehensive fault taxonomy is a key starting point for providing techniques and methods for accessing the quality of a given system. In this paper, an attempt has been made to outline several SBSs faults into a well-structured taxonomy that may assist developers to plan suitable fault repairing strategies. Some commonly emphasized fault recovery strategies are also discussed. Some challenges that may occur during fault handling of SBSs are also mentioned

    CONTREX: Design of embedded mixed-criticality CONTRol systems under consideration of EXtra-functional properties

    The increasing processing power of today’s HW/SW platforms leads to the integration of more and more functions in a single device. Additional design challenges arise when these functions share computing resources and belong to different criticality levels. CONTREX complements current activities in the area of predictable computing platforms and segregation mechanisms with techniques to consider the extra-functional properties, i.e., timing constraints, power, and temperature. CONTREX enables energy efficient and cost aware design through analysis and optimization of these properties with regard to application demands at different criticality levels. This article presents an overview of the CONTREX European project, its main innovative technology (extension of a model based design approach, functional and extra-functional analysis with executable models and run-time management) and the final results of three industrial use-cases from different domain (avionics, automotive and telecommunication).The work leading to these results has received funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2011 under grant agreement no. 611146
