    The scholarly impact of TRECVid (2003-2009)

    This paper reports on an investigation into the scholarly impact of the TRECVid (TREC Video Retrieval Evaluation) benchmarking conferences between 2003 and 2009. The contribution of TRECVid to research in video retrieval is assessed by analyzing publication content to show the development of techniques and approaches over time and by analyzing publication impact through publication numbers and citation analysis. Popular conference and journal venues for TRECVid publications are identified in terms of number of citations received. For a selection of participants at different career stages, the relative importance of TRECVid publications in terms of citations vis a vis their other publications is investigated. TRECVid, as an evaluation conference, provides data on which research teams ‘scored’ highly against the evaluation criteria and the relationship between ‘top scoring’ teams at TRECVid and the ‘top scoring’ papers in terms of citations is analysed. A strong relationship was found between ‘success’ at TRECVid and ‘success’ at citations both for high scoring and low scoring teams. The implications of the study in terms of the value of TRECVid as a research activity, and the value of bibliometric analysis as a research evaluation tool, are discussed

    Relevance feedback for best match term weighting algorithms in information retrieval

    Personalisation in full text retrieval or full text filtering implies reweighting of the query terms based on some explicit or implicit feedback from the user. Relevance feedback inputs the user's judgements on previously retrieved documents to construct a personalised query or user profile. This paper studies relevance feedback within two probabilistic models of information retrieval: the first based on statistical language models and the second based on the binary independence probabilistic model. The paper shows the resemblance of the approaches to relevance feedback of these models, introduces new approaches to relevance feedback for both models, and evaluates the new relevance feedback algorithms on the TREC collection. The paper shows that there are no significant differences between simple and sophisticated approaches to relevance feedback

    A Comparison of Nuggets and Clusters for Evaluating Timeline Summaries

    There is growing interest in systems that generate timeline summaries by filtering high-volume streams of documents to retain only those that are relevant to a particular event or topic. Continued advances in algorithms and techniques for this task depend on standardized and reproducible evaluation methodologies for comparing systems. However, timeline summary evaluation is still in its infancy, with competing methodologies currently being explored in international evaluation forums such as TREC. One area of active exploration is how to explicitly represent the units of information that should appear in a 'good' summary. Currently, there are two main approaches, one based on identifying nuggets in an external 'ground truth', and the other based on clustering system outputs. In this paper, by building test collections that have both nugget and cluster annotations, we are able to compare these two approaches. Specifically, we address questions related to evaluation effort, differences in the final evaluation products, and correlations between scores and rankings generated by both approaches. We summarize advantages and disadvantages of nuggets and clusters to offer recommendations for future system evaluation
