    3D Shape Measurement of Objects in Motion and Objects with Complex Surfaces

    This thesis aims to address the issues caused by high reflective surface and object with motion in the three dimensional (3D) shape measurement based on phase shifting profilometry (PSP). Firstly, the influence of the reflectivity of the object surface on the fringe patterns is analysed. One of the essential factors related to phase precision is modulation index, which has a direct relationship with the surface reflectivity. A comparative study focusing on the modulation index of different materials is presented. The distribution of modulation index for different material samples is statistically analysed, which leads to the conclusion that the modulation index is determined by the diffuse reflectivity. Then the method based on optimized combination of multiple reflected image patterns is proposed to address the saturation issue and improve the accuracy for the reconstruction of object with high reflectivity.A set of phase shifted sinusoidal fringe patterns with different exposure time are projected to the object and then captured by camera. Then a set of masks are generated to select the data for the compositing. Maximalsignal-to-noise ratio combining model is employed to form the composite images pattern. The composite images are then used to phase mapping.Comparing to the method only using the highest intensity of pixels for compositing image, the signal noise ratio (SNR) of composite image is increased due to more efficient use of information carried by the images

    Review and Comparison of High-Dynamic Range Three-Dimensional Shape Measurement Techniques

    In the last decade, a significant number of techniques for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement have been proposed. There are a large number of measurement demands for metallic workpieces with shiny surfaces in industrial applications; however, such shiny surfaces cannot be directly measured using the conventional structured light method. Therefore, various techniques have been investigated to solve this problem over the last few years. Some reviews summarize the different 3D imaging techniques; however, no comprehensive review exists that provides an insight into high-dynamic range (HDR) 3D shape measurement techniques used for shiny surfaces. We present a survey of recent HDR techniques for the digitization of shiny surfaces and classify and discuss the advantages and drawbacks of different techniques with respect to each other

    This paper reviews recent developments of non-contact three-dimensional (3D) surface metrology using an active structured optical probe. We focus primarily on those active non-contact 3D surface measurement techniques that could be applicable to the manufacturing industry. We discuss principles of each technology, and its advantageous characteristics as well as limitations.     Novel Approaches in Structured Light Illumination

    Among the various approaches to 3-D imaging, structured light illumination (SLI) is widely spread. SLI employs a pair of digital projector and digital camera such that the correspondences can be found based upon the projecting and capturing of a group of designed light patterns. As an active sensing method, SLI is known for its robustness and high accuracy. In this dissertation, I study the phase shifting method (PSM), which is one of the most employed strategy in SLI. And, three novel approaches in PSM have been proposed in this dissertation. First, by regarding the design of patterns as placing points in an N-dimensional space, I take the phase measuring profilometry (PMP) as an example and propose the edge-pattern strategy which achieves maximum signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the projected patterns. Second, I develop a novel period information embedded pattern strategy for fast, reliable 3-D data acquisition and reconstruction. The proposed period coded phase shifting strategy removes the depth ambiguity associated with traditional phase shifting patterns without reducing phase accuracy or increasing the number of projected patterns. Thus, it can be employed for high accuracy realtime 3-D system. Then, I propose a hybrid approach for high quality 3-D reconstructions with only a small number of illumination patterns by maximizing the use of correspondence information from the phase, texture, and modulation data derived from multi-view, PMP-based, SLI images, without rigorously synchronizing the cameras and projectors and calibrating the device gammas. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed novel strategies for 3-D SLI systems

    The characterisation and simulation of 3D vision sensors for measurement optimisation

    The use of 3D Vision is becoming increasingly common in a range of industrial applications including part identification, reverse engineering, quality control and inspection. To facilitate this increased usage, especially in autonomous applications such as free-form assembly and robotic metrology, the capability to deploy a sensor to the optimum pose for a measurement task is essential to reduce cycle times and increase measurement quality. Doing so requires knowledge of the 3D sensor capabilities on a material specific basis, as the optical properties of a surface, object shape, pose and even the measurement itself have severe implications for the data quality. This need is not reflected in the current state of sensor haracterisation standards which commonly utilise optically compliant artefacts and therefore can not inform the user of a 3D sensor the realistic expected performance on non-ideal objects.This thesis presents a method of scoring candidate viewpoints for their ability to perform geometric measurements on an object of arbitrary surface finish. This is achieved by first defining a technology independent, empirical sensor characterisation method which implements a novel variant of the commonly used point density point cloud quality metric, which is normalised to isolate the effect of surface finish on sensor performance, as well as the more conventional assessment of point standard deviation. The characterisation method generates a set of performance maps for a sensor per material which are a function of distance and surface orientation. A sensor simulation incorporates these performance maps to estimate the statistical properties of a point cloud on objects with arbitrary shape and surface finish, providing the sensor has been characterised on the material in question.A framework for scoring measurement specific candidate viewpoints is presented in the context of the geometric inspection of four artefacts with different surface finish but identical geometry. Views are scored on their ability to perform each measurement based on a novel view score metric, which incorporates the expected point density, noise and occlusion of measurement dependent model features. The simulation is able to score the views reliably on all four surface finishes tested, which range from ideal matt white to highly polished aluminium. In 93% of measurements, a set of optimal or nearly optimal views is correctly selected.</div

    Automatic volume inspection for glass blow moulds

    In the glass bottle mould making industry, volume control is done by measuring the amount of water needed to fill the mould. This process has several issues. Firstly, it requires a trained operator to properly seal the mould. Secondly, different operators will lead to different volume values. Another issue is related to the time and work necessary for the procedure, which can take up to 20 minutes for a single mould, making it unsuitable to inspect several moulds of the same series. These issues can be solved by automating the procedure. By using reverse engineering systems to obtain the internal cavity surfaces, comparative studies can be done, such as wear study, enabling the optimization of the moulds. The goal of this project is to establish a system to automate the inspection of the moulds which will result in the acquisition of the moulding surfaces. Then, the volume of the moulds and surface deviations in specific areas can be measured. The development of this project focused in two main areas: the development of a script, where the volume is calculated and the surface is inspected, from cloud points, to determine if the mould is in an acceptable state; and the study of technologies capable of acquiring the mould’s surface while simultaneously being automatable. As for this study, several case studies using laser and structured light are performed to understand the abilities and limitations of these technologies. The first study was done using polished cast iron moulds to determine the ability to acquire the surface and obtain the volume. Then, the ability to present proper comparative results is explored by using a set of unpolished cast iron moulds and then these same moulds once polished to verify if the used systems can obtain the deviations between the two situations. Finally, the validation of the technologies was done using a demo bronze mould, where surface deviations were inspected as well as a ring gauge where the inner cylinder was used for inspection. From these cases, the used laser scanner was able to obtain the volumes of the moulds as well as proper comparative results without spray. As for the used structured light system, it proved unable to acquire the surfaces of the moulds and of the ring gauge, requiring spray. Despite this performance, the system is quite automatable and a state-of-the-art structured light system, using blue light, could be used for this purpose. The laser is also a viable solution, but the cost and complexity to automate can be higher than the structured light system

    State-of-The-Art and Applications of 3D Imaging Sensors in Industry, Cultural Heritage, Medicine, and Criminal Investigation

    3D imaging sensors for the acquisition of three dimensional (3D) shapes have created, in recent years, a considerable degree of interest for a number of applications. The miniaturization and integration of the optical and electronic components used to build them have played a crucial role in the achievement of compactness, robustness and flexibility of the sensors. Today, several 3D sensors are available on the market, even in combination with other sensors in a “sensor fusion” approach. An importance equal to that of physical miniaturization has the portability of the measurements, via suitable interfaces, into software environments designed for their elaboration, e.g., CAD-CAM systems, virtual renders, and rapid prototyping tools. In this paper, following an overview of the state-of-art of 3D imaging sensors, a number of significant examples of their use are presented, with particular reference to industry, heritage, medicine, and criminal investigation applications

    Optical microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microoptoelectromechanical systems (MOEMS), or optical microsystems are devices or systems that interact with light through actuation or sensing at a micro- or millimeter scale. Optical MEMS have had enormous commercial success in projectors, displays, and fiberoptic communications. The best-known example is Texas Instruments’ digital micromirror devices (DMDs). The development of optical MEMS was impeded seriously by the Telecom Bubble in 2000. Fortunately, DMDs grew their market size even in that economy downturn. Meanwhile, in the last one and half decade, the optical MEMS market has been slowly but steadily recovering. During this time, the major technological change was the shift of thin-film polysilicon microstructures to single-crystal–silicon microsructures. Especially in the last few years, cloud data centers are demanding large-port optical cross connects (OXCs) and autonomous driving looks for miniature LiDAR, and virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) demands tiny optical scanners. This is a new wave of opportunities for optical MEMS. Furthermore, several research institutes around the world have been developing MOEMS devices for extreme applications (very fine tailoring of light beam in terms of phase, intensity, or wavelength) and/or extreme environments (vacuum, cryogenic temperatures) for many years. Accordingly, this Special Issue seeks to showcase research papers, short communications, and review articles that focus on (1) novel design, fabrication, control, and modeling of optical MEMS devices based on all kinds of actuation/sensing mechanisms; and (2) new developments of applying optical MEMS devices of any kind in consumer electronics, optical communications, industry, biology, medicine, agriculture, physics, astronomy, space, or defense

    3D Acquisition of Mirroring Objects using Striped Patterns

    Objects with mirroring optical characteristics are left out of the scope of most 3D scanning methods. We present here a new automatic acquisition approach, shape-from-distortion, that focuses on that category of objects, requires only a still camera and a color monitor, and produces range scans (plus a normal and a reflectance map) of the target. Our technique consists of two steps: first, an improved environment matte is captured for the mirroring object, using the interference of patterns with different frequencies to obtain sub-pixel accuracy. Then, the matte is converted into a normal and a depth map by exploiting the self-coherence of a surface when integrating the normal map along different paths. The results show very high accuracy, capturing even smallest surface details. The acquired depth maps can be further processed using standard techniques to produce a complete 3D mesh of the object
