    Non-destructive technologies for fruit and vegetable size determination - a review

    Here, we review different methods for non-destructive horticultural produce size determination, focusing on electronic technologies capable of measuring fruit volume. The usefulness of produce size estimation is justified and a comprehensive classification system of the existing electronic techniques to determine dimensional size is proposed. The different systems identified are compared in terms of their versatility, precision and throughput. There is general agreement in considering that online measurement of axes, perimeter and projected area has now been achieved. Nevertheless, rapid and accurate volume determination of irregular-shaped produce, as needed for density sorting, has only become available in the past few years. An important application of density measurement is soluble solids content (SSC) sorting. If the range of SSC in the batch is narrow and a large number of classes are desired, accurate volume determination becomes important. A good alternative for fruit three-dimensional surface reconstruction, from which volume and surface area can be computed, is the combination of height profiles from a range sensor with a two-dimensional object image boundary from a solid-state camera (brightness image) or from the range sensor itself (intensity image).     RoboCook: Long-Horizon Elasto-Plastic Object Manipulation with Diverse Tools

    Humans excel in complex long-horizon soft body manipulation tasks via flexible tool use: bread baking requires a knife to slice the dough and a rolling pin to flatten it. Often regarded as a hallmark of human cognition, tool use in autonomous robots remains limited due to challenges in understanding tool-object interactions. Here we develop an intelligent robotic system, RoboCook, which perceives, models, and manipulates elasto-plastic objects with various tools. RoboCook uses point cloud scene representations, models tool-object interactions with Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), and combines tool classification with self-supervised policy learning to devise manipulation plans. We demonstrate that from just 20 minutes of real-world interaction data per tool, a general-purpose robot arm can learn complex long-horizon soft object manipulation tasks, such as making dumplings and alphabet letter cookies. Extensive evaluations show that RoboCook substantially outperforms state-of-the-art approaches, exhibits robustness against severe external disturbances, and demonstrates adaptability to different materials.Comment: Project page: https://hshi74.github.io/robocook

    Transfer Learning Based Fault Detection for Suspension System Using Vibrational Analysis and Radar Plots

    The suspension system is of paramount importance in any automobile. Thanks to the suspension system, every journey benefits from pleasant rides, stable driving and precise handling. However, the suspension system is prone to faults that can significantly impact the driving quality of the vehicle. This makes it essential to find and diagnose any faults in the suspension system and rectify them immediately. Numerous techniques have been used to identify and diagnose suspension faults, each with drawbacks. This paper’s proposed suspension fault detection system aims to detect these faults using deep transfer learning techniques instead of the time-consuming and expensive conventional methods. This paper used pre-trained networks such as Alex Net, ResNet-50, Google Net and VGG16 to identify the faults using radar plots of the vibration signals generated by the suspension system in eight cases. The vibration data were acquired using an accelerometer and data acquisition system placed on a test rig for eight different test conditions (seven faulty, one good). The deep learning model with the highest accuracy in identifying and detecting faults among the four models was chosen and adopted to find defects. The results state that VGG16 produced the highest classification accuracy of 96.70%

    Semantic Segmentation for Fully Automated Macrofouling Analysis on Coatings after Field Exposure

    Biofouling is a major challenge for sustainable shipping, filter membranes, heat exchangers, and medical devices. The development of fouling-resistant coatings requires the evaluation of their effectiveness. Such an evaluation is usually based on the assessment of fouling progression after different exposure times to the target medium (e.g., salt water). The manual assessment of macrofouling requires expert knowledge about local fouling communities due to high variances in phenotypical appearance, has single-image sampling inaccuracies for certain species, and lacks spatial information. Here we present an approach for automatic image-based macrofouling analysis. We created a dataset with dense labels prepared from field panel images and propose a convolutional network (adapted U-Net) for the semantic segmentation of different macrofouling classes. The establishment of macrofouling localization allows for the generation of a successional model which enables the determination of direct surface attachment and in-depth epibiotic studies.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figure

    Collaborative and Cooperative Robotics Applications using Visual Perception

    The objective of this Thesis is to develop novel integrated strategies for collaborative and cooperative robotic applications. Commonly, industrial robots operate in structured environments and in work-cell separated from human operators. Nowadays, collaborative robots have the capacity of sharing the workspace and collaborate with humans or other robots to perform complex tasks. These robots often operate in an unstructured environment, whereby they need sensors and algorithms to get information about environment changes. Advanced vision and control techniques have been analyzed to evaluate their performance and their applicability to industrial tasks. Then, some selected techniques have been applied for the first time to an industrial context. A Peg-in-Hole task has been chosen as first case study, since it has been extensively studied but still remains challenging: it requires accuracy both in the determination of the hole poses and in the robot positioning. Two solutions have been developed and tested. Experimental results have been discussed to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Grasping partially known objects in unstructured environments is one of the most challenging issues in robotics. It is a complex task and requires to address multiple subproblems, in order to be accomplished, including object localization and grasp pose detection. Also for this class of issues some vision techniques have been analyzed. One of these has been adapted to be used in industrial scenarios. Moreover, as a second case study, a robot-to-robot object handover task in a partially structured environment and in the absence of explicit communication between the robots has been developed and validated. Finally, the two case studies have been integrated in two real industrial setups to demonstrate the applicability of the strategies to solving industrial problems

    Information Theory and Its Application in Machine Condition Monitoring

    Condition monitoring of machinery is one of the most important aspects of many modern industries. With the rapid advancement of science and technology, machines are becoming increasingly complex. Moreover, an exponential increase of demand is leading an increasing requirement of machine output. As a result, in most modern industries, machines have to work for 24 hours a day. All these factors are leading to the deterioration of machine health in a higher rate than before. Breakdown of the key components of a machine such as bearing, gearbox or rollers can cause a catastrophic effect both in terms of financial and human costs. In this perspective, it is important not only to detect the fault at its earliest point of inception but necessary to design the overall monitoring process, such as fault classification, fault severity assessment and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction for better planning of the maintenance schedule. Information theory is one of the pioneer contributions of modern science that has evolved into various forms and algorithms over time. Due to its ability to address the non-linearity and non-stationarity of machine health deterioration, it has become a popular choice among researchers. Information theory is an effective technique for extracting features of machines under different health conditions.     Computer vision for automatic quality inspection of dried figs (Ficus carica L.) in real-time

    [EN] This work reports the development of automated systems based on computer vision to improve the quality control and sorting of dried figs of Cosenza (protected denomination of origin) focusing on two research issues. The first was based on qualitative discrimination of figs through colour assessment comparing the analysis of colour images obtained using a digital camera with those obtained according to conventional instrumental methods, i.e. colourimetry currently done in laboratories. Data were expressed in terms of CIE XYZ, CIELAB and HunterLab colour spaces, as well as the browning index measurement of each fruit, and then, analysed using PCA and PLS-DA based methods. The results showed that both chroma meter and image analysis allowed a complete distinction between high quality and deteriorated figs, according to colour attributes. The second research issue had the purpose of developing image processing algorithms to achieve real-time sorting of figs using an experimental prototype based on machine vision, simulating an industrial application. An extremely high 99.5% of deteriorated figs were classified correctly as well as 89.0% of light coloured good quality figs A lower percentage was obtained for dark good quality figs but results were acceptable since the most of the confusion was among the two classes of good product. Pests and diseases are a major obstacle to achieving this productivity outcome. Therefore, it is very important to develop efficient methods for the automatic detection, identification, and prediction of pests and diseases in agricultural crops. To perform such automation, Machine Learning (ML) techniques can be used to derive knowledge and relationships from the data that is being worked on. This paper presents a literature review on ML techniques used in the agricultural sector, focusing on the tasks of classification, detection, and prediction of diseases and pests, with an emphasis on tomato crops.
