    How to Choose the Relevant MAC Protocol for Wireless Smart Parking Urban Networks?

    Parking sensor network is rapidly deploying around the world and is regarded as one of the first implemented urban services in smart cities. To provide the best network performance, the MAC protocol shall be adaptive enough in order to satisfy the traffic intensity and variation of parking sensors. In this paper, we study the heavy-tailed parking and vacant time models from SmartSantander, and then we apply the traffic model in the simulation with four different kinds of MAC protocols, that is, contention-based, schedule-based and two hybrid versions of them. The result shows that the packet interarrival time is no longer heavy-tailed while collecting a group of parking sensors, and then choosing an appropriate MAC protocol highly depends on the network configuration.     Performance Comparison of Contention- and Schedule-based MAC Protocols in Urban Parking Sensor Networks

    Network traffic model is a critical problem for urban applications, mainly because of its diversity and node density. As wireless sensor network is highly concerned with the development of smart cities, careful consideration to traffic model helps choose appropriate protocols and adapt network parameters to reach best performances on energy-latency tradeoffs. In this paper, we compare the performance of two off-the-shelf medium access control protocols on two different kinds of traffic models, and then evaluate their application-end information delay and energy consumption while varying traffic parameters and network density. From the simulation results, we highlight some limits induced by network density and occurrence frequency of event-driven applications. When it comes to realtime urban services, a protocol selection shall be taken into account - even dynamically - with a special attention to energy-delay tradeoff.     An Energy Aware and Secure MAC Protocol for Tackling Denial of Sleep Attacks in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks which form part of the core for the Internet of Things consist of resource constrained sensors that are usually powered by batteries. Therefore, careful energy awareness is essential when working with these devices. Indeed,the introduction of security techniques such as authentication and encryption, to ensure confidentiality and integrity of data, can place higher energy load on the sensors. However, the absence of security protection c ould give room for energy drain attacks such as denial of sleep attacks which have a higher negative impact on the life span ( of the sensors than the presence of security features. This thesis, therefore, focuses on tackling denial of sleep attacks from two perspectives A security perspective and an energy efficiency perspective. The security perspective involves evaluating and ranking a number of security based techniques to curbing denial of sleep attacks. The energy efficiency perspective, on the other hand, involves exploring duty cycling and simulating three Media Access Control ( protocols Sensor MAC, Timeout MAC andTunableMAC under different network sizes and measuring different parameters such as the Received Signal Strength RSSI) and Link Quality Indicator ( Transmit power, throughput and energy efficiency Duty cycling happens to be one of the major techniques for conserving energy in wireless sensor networks and this research aims to answer questions with regards to the effect of duty cycles on the energy efficiency as well as the throughput of three duty cycle protocols Sensor MAC ( Timeout MAC ( and TunableMAC in addition to creating a novel MAC protocol that is also more resilient to denial of sleep a ttacks than existing protocols. The main contributions to knowledge from this thesis are the developed framework used for evaluation of existing denial of sleep attack solutions and the algorithms which fuel the other contribution to knowledge a newly developed protocol tested on the Castalia Simulator on the OMNET++ platform. The new protocol has been compared with existing protocols and has been found to have significant improvement in energy efficiency and also better resilience to denial of sleep at tacks Part of this research has been published Two conference publications in IEEE Explore and one workshop paper

    A Comprehensive Approach to WSN-Based ITS Applications: A Survey

    In order to perform sensing tasks, most current Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) rely on expensive sensors, which offer only limited functionality. A more recent trend consists of using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for such purpose, which reduces the required investment and enables the development of new collaborative and intelligent applications that further contribute to improve both driving safety and traffic efficiency. This paper surveys the application of WSNs to such ITS scenarios, tackling the main issues that may arise when developing these systems. The paper is divided into sections which address different matters including vehicle detection and classification as well as the selection of appropriate communication protocols, network architecture, topology and some important design parameters. In addition, in line with the multiplicity of different technologies that take part in ITS, it does not consider WSNs just as stand-alone systems, but also as key components of heterogeneous systems cooperating along with other technologies employed in vehicular scenarios

    Aquesta tesi proposa una plataforma de detecció d’intrusions per a revelar atacs a les xarxes de sensors sense fils (WSN, per les sigles en anglès) de les ciutats intel·ligents (smart cities). La plataforma està dissenyada tenint en compte les necessitats dels administradors de la ciutat intel·ligent, els quals necessiten accés a una arquitectura centralitzada que pugui gestionar alarmes de seguretat en un sistema altament heterogeni i distribuït. En aquesta tesi s’identifiquen els diversos passos necessaris des de la recollida de dades fins a l’execució de les tècniques de detecció d’intrusions i s’avalua que el procés sigui escalable i capaç de gestionar dades típiques de ciutats intel·ligents. A més, es comparen diversos algorismes de detecció d’anomalies i s’observa que els mètodes de vectors de suport d’una mateixa classe (one-class support vector machines) resulten la tècnica multivariant més adequada per a descobrir atacs tenint en compte les necessitats d’aquest context. Finalment, es proposa un esquema per a ajudar els administradors a identificar els tipus d’atacs rebuts a partir de les alarmes disparades.Esta tesis propone una plataforma de detección de intrusiones para revelar ataques en las redes de sensores inalámbricas (WSN, por las siglas en inglés) de las ciudades inteligentes (smart cities). La plataforma está diseñada teniendo en cuenta la necesidad de los administradores de la ciudad inteligente, los cuales necesitan acceso a una arquitectura centralizada que pueda gestionar alarmas de seguridad en un sistema altamente heterogéneo y distribuido. En esta tesis se identifican los varios pasos necesarios desde la recolección de datos hasta la ejecución de las técnicas de detección de intrusiones y se evalúa que el proceso sea escalable y capaz de gestionar datos típicos de ciudades inteligentes. Además, se comparan varios algoritmos de detección de anomalías y se observa que las máquinas de vectores de soporte de una misma clase (one-class support vector machines) resultan la técnica multivariante más adecuada para descubrir ataques teniendo en cuenta las necesidades de este contexto. Finalmente, se propone un esquema para ayudar a los administradores a identificar los tipos de ataques recibidos a partir de las alarmas disparadas.This thesis proposes an intrusion detection platform which reveals attacks in smart city wireless sensor networks (WSN). The platform is designed taking into account the needs of smart city administrators, who need access to a centralized architecture that can manage security alarms in a highly heterogeneous and distributed system. In this thesis, we identify the various necessary steps from gathering WSN data to running the detection techniques and we evaluate whether the procedure is scalable and capable of handling typical smart city data. Moreover, we compare several anomaly detection algorithms and we observe that one-class support vector machines constitute the most suitable multivariate technique to reveal attacks, taking into account the requirements in this context. Finally, we propose a classification schema to assist administrators in identifying the types of attacks compromising their networks

    Peer-reviewedUrban areas around the world are populating their streets with wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in order to feed incipient smart city IT systems with metropolitan data. In the future smart cities, WSN technology will have a massive presence in the streets, and the operation of municipal services will be based to a great extent on data gathered with this technology. However, from an information security point of view, WSNs can have failures and can be the target of many different types of attacks. Therefore, this raises concerns about the reliability of this technology in a smart city context. Traditionally, security measures in WSNs have been proposed to protect specific protocols in an environment with total control of a single network. This approach is not valid for smart cities, as multiple external providers deploy a plethora of WSNs with different security requirements. Hence, a new security perspective needs to be adopted to protect WSNs in smart cities. Considering security issues related to the deployment of WSNs as a main data source in smart cities, in this article, we propose an intrusion detection framework and an attack classification schema to assist smart city administrators to delimit the most plausible attacks and to point out the components and providers affected by incidents. We demonstrate the use of the classification schema providing a proof of concept based on a simulated selective forwarding attack affecting a parking and a sound WSN.Las zonas urbanas de todo el mundo están poblando sus calles con redes de sensores inalámbricos (WSN) para alimentar sistemas informáticos de incipientes ciudades inteligentes con datos metropolitanos. En las futuras ciudades inteligentes, la tecnología WSN tendrá una presencia masiva en las calles, y la operación de los servicios municipales se basará en gran medida en los datos recopilados con esta tecnología. Sin embargo, desde un punto de vista de seguridad de la información, las WSN pueden tener fallos y pueden ser el objetivo de muchos tipos diferentes de ataques. Por lo tanto, esto plantea preocupaciones sobre la fiabilidad de esta tecnología en un contexto de ciudad inteligente. Tradicionalmente, se han propuesto medidas de seguridad en WSNs para proteger protocolos específicos en un entorno con control total de una sola red. Este enfoque no es válido para ciudades inteligentes, ya que múltiples proveedores externos implementan una gran cantidad de WSN con diferentes requisitos de seguridad. Por lo tanto, se debe adoptar una nueva perspectiva de seguridad para proteger las WSNs en ciudades inteligentes. En este artículo proponemos un marco de detección de intrusiones y un esquema de clasificación de ataques para ayudar a los administradores de ciudades inteligentes a delimitar los ataques más plausibles y señalar los componentes y los proveedores afectados por incidentes.     Energy Management in RFID-Sensor Networks: Taxonomy and Challenges

    Ubiquitous Computing is foreseen to play an important role for data production and network connectivity in the coming decades. The Internet of Things (IoT) research which has the capability to encapsulate identification potential and sensing capabilities, strives towards the objective of developing seamless, interoperable and securely integrated systems which can be achieved by connecting the Internet with computing devices. This gives way for the evolution of wireless energy harvesting and power transmission using computing devices. Radio Frequency (RF) based Energy Management (EM) has become the backbone for providing energy to wireless integrated systems. The two main techniques for EM in RFID Sensor Networks (RSN) are Energy Harvesting (EH) and Energy Transfer (ET). These techniques enable the dynamic energy level maintenance and optimisation as well as ensuring reliable communication which adheres to the goal of increased network performance and lifetime. In this paper, we present an overview of RSN, its types of integration and relative applications. We then provide the state-of-the-art EM techniques and strategies for RSN from August 2009 till date, thereby reviewing the existing EH and ET mechanisms designed for RSN. The taxonomy on various challenges for EM in RSN has also been articulated for open research directives
