NeuRoute: Predictive Dynamic Routing for Software-Defined Networks
This paper introduces NeuRoute, a dynamic routing framework for Software
Defined Networks (SDN) entirely based on machine learning, specifically, Neural
Networks. Current SDN/OpenFlow controllers use a default routing based on
Dijkstra algorithm for shortest paths, and provide APIs to develop custom
routing applications. NeuRoute is a controller-agnostic dynamic routing
framework that (i) predicts traffic matrix in real time, (ii) uses a neural
network to learn traffic characteristics and (iii) generates forwarding rules
accordingly to optimize the network throughput. NeuRoute achieves the same
results as the most efficient dynamic routing heuristic but in much less

Discriminative Link Prediction using Local Links, Node Features and Community Structure
A link prediction (LP) algorithm is given a graph, and has to rank, for each
node, other nodes that are candidates for new linkage. LP is strongly motivated
by social search and recommendation applications. LP techniques often focus on
global properties (graph conductance, hitting or commute times, Katz score) or
local properties (Adamic-Adar and many variations, or node feature vectors),
but rarely combine these signals. Furthermore, neither of these extremes
exploit link densities at the intermediate level of communities. In this paper
we describe a discriminative LP algorithm that exploits two new signals. First,
a co-clustering algorithm provides community level link density estimates,
which are used to qualify observed links with a surprise value. Second, links
in the immediate neighborhood of the link to be predicted are not interpreted
at face value, but through a local model of node feature similarities. These
signals are combined into a discriminative link predictor. We evaluate the new
predictor using five diverse data sets that are standard in the literature. We
report on significant accuracy boosts compared to standard LP methods
(including Adamic-Adar and random walk). Apart from the new predictor, another
contribution is a rigorous protocol for benchmarking and reporting LP
algorithms, which reveals the regions of strengths and weaknesses of all the
predictors studied here, and establishes the new proposal as the most robust.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Deep Learning for Link Prediction in Dynamic Networks using Weak Estimators
Link prediction is the task of evaluating the probability that an edge exists in a network, and it has useful applications in many domains. Traditional approaches rely on measuring the similarity between two nodes in a static context. Recent research has focused on extending link prediction to a dynamic setting, predicting the creation and destruction of links in networks that evolve over time. Though a difficult task, the employment of deep learning techniques have shown to make notable improvements to the accuracy of predictions. To this end, we propose the novel application of weak estimators in addition to the utilization of traditional similarity metrics to inexpensively build an effective feature vector for a deep neural network. Weak estimators have been used in a variety of machine learning algorithms to improve model accuracy, owing to their capacity to estimate changing probabilities in dynamic systems. Experiments indicate that our approach results in increased prediction accuracy on several real-world dynamic networks
Material Recognition CNNs and Hierarchical Planning for Biped Robot Locomotion on Slippery Terrain
In this paper we tackle the problem of visually predicting surface friction
for environments with diverse surfaces, and integrating this knowledge into
biped robot locomotion planning. The problem is essential for autonomous robot
locomotion since diverse surfaces with varying friction abound in the real
world, from wood to ceramic tiles, grass or ice, which may cause difficulties
or huge energy costs for robot locomotion if not considered. We propose to
estimate friction and its uncertainty from visual estimation of material
classes using convolutional neural networks, together with probability
distribution functions of friction associated with each material. We then
robustly integrate the friction predictions into a hierarchical (footstep and
full-body) planning method using chance constraints, and optimize the same
trajectory costs at both levels of the planning method for consistency. Our
solution achieves fully autonomous perception and locomotion on slippery
terrain, which considers not only friction and its uncertainty, but also
collision, stability and trajectory cost. We show promising friction prediction
results in real pictures of outdoor scenarios, and planning experiments on a
real robot facing surfaces with different friction
Wireless Communications in the Era of Big Data
The rapidly growing wave of wireless data service is pushing against the
boundary of our communication network's processing power. The pervasive and
exponentially increasing data traffic present imminent challenges to all the
aspects of the wireless system design, such as spectrum efficiency, computing
capabilities and fronthaul/backhaul link capacity. In this article, we discuss
the challenges and opportunities in the design of scalable wireless systems to
embrace such a "bigdata" era. On one hand, we review the state-of-the-art
networking architectures and signal processing techniques adaptable for
managing the bigdata traffic in wireless networks. On the other hand, instead
of viewing mobile bigdata as a unwanted burden, we introduce methods to
capitalize from the vast data traffic, for building a bigdata-aware wireless
network with better wireless service quality and new mobile applications. We
highlight several promising future research directions for wireless

Mining data streams using option trees (revised edition, 2004)
The data stream model for data mining places harsh restrictions on a learning algorithm. A model must be induced following the briefest interrogation of the data, must use only available memory and must update itself over time within these constraints. Additionally, the model must be able to be used for data mining at any point in time.
This paper describes a data stream classi_cation algorithm using an ensemble of option trees. The ensemble of trees is induced by boosting and iteratively combined into a single interpretable model. The algorithm is evaluated using benchmark datasets for accuracy against state-of-the-art algorithms that make use of the entire dataset
Link Prediction in Complex Networks: A Survey
Link prediction in complex networks has attracted increasing attention from
both physical and computer science communities. The algorithms can be used to
extract missing information, identify spurious interactions, evaluate network
evolving mechanisms, and so on. This article summaries recent progress about
link prediction algorithms, emphasizing on the contributions from physical
perspectives and approaches, such as the random-walk-based methods and the
maximum likelihood methods. We also introduce three typical applications:
reconstruction of networks, evaluation of network evolving mechanism and
classification of partially labelled networks. Finally, we introduce some
