    Instrumentation and control of anaerobic digestion processes: a review and some research challenges

    The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11157-015-9382-6[EN] To enhance energy production from methane or resource recovery from digestate, anaerobic digestion processes require advanced instrumentation and control tools. Over the years, research on these topics has evolved and followed the main fields of application of anaerobic digestion processes: from municipal sewage sludge to liquid mainly industrial then municipal organic fraction of solid waste and agricultural residues. Time constants of the processes have also changed with respect to the treated waste from minutes or hours to weeks or months. Since fast closed loop control is needed for short time constant processes, human operator is now included in the loop when taking decisions to optimize anaerobic digestion plants dealing with complex solid waste over a long retention time. Control objectives have also moved from the regulation of key variables measured online to the prediction of overall process perfor- mance based on global off-line measurements to optimize the feeding of the processes. Additionally, the need for more accurate prediction of methane production and organic matter biodegradation has impacted the complexity of instrumentation and should include a more detailed characterization of the waste (e.g., biochemical fractions like proteins, lipids and carbohydrates)andtheirbioaccessibility andbiodegradability characteristics. However, even if in the literature several methodologies have been developed to determine biodegradability based on organic matter characterization, only a few papers deal with bioaccessibility assessment.     Real-Time Substrate Feed Optimization of Anaerobic Co-Digestion Plants

    In anaerobic co-digestion plants a mix of organic materials is converted to biogas using the anaerobic digestion process. These organic materials, called substrates, can be crops, sludge, manure, organic wastes and many more. They are fed on a daily basis and significantly affect the biogas production process. In this thesis dynamic real-time optimization of the substrate feed for anaerobic co-digestion plants is developed. In dynamic real-time optimization a dynamic simulation model is used to predict the future performance of the controlled plant. Therefore, a complex simulation model for biogas plants is developed, which uses the famous Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1). With this model the future economics as well as stability can be calculated resulting in a multi-objective performance criterion. Using multi-objective nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) the model predictions are used to find the optimal substrate feed for the biogas plant. Therefore, NMPC solves an optimization problem over a moving horizon and applies the optimal substrate feed to the plant for a short while before recalculating the new optimal solution. The multi-objective optimization problem is solved using state-of-the-art methods such as SMS-EMOA and SMS-EGO. Although anaerobic digesters have seen wide applicability, they typically perform below their optimum as a consequence of the complexity of the underlying process. This work involves the development of a generic advanced process control system for the optimisation of the performance of anaerobic digesters. There is a requirement for a configurable monitoring and optimisation system with associated sensors to optimise the production of biogas, combined with a degree of flexibility for quality and content of the digestate. Several analyses are conducted to establish the baseline performance of the four benchmarked sites. Significant findings are revealed which include lack of superior technology between the four varying processes, differing performance due to optimisation activities through increased monitoring and whole plant optimisation such as energy usage and production. Potential improvements are presented including increased monitoring and a reduction in the variability of key parameters such as thicker percentage dry solids (% DS), steady feed rate, and temperature. The lack of instrumentation in anaerobic digestion processes is a key bottleneck as sensors and analysers are necessary to reduce the uncertainty related to the initial conditions, kinetics and the input concentrations of the process. Without knowledge of the process conditions, the process is inevitably difficult to control. Financial gains that can be achieved through increased instrumentation were calculated to justify the business case for the need for process improvement. An instrumentation review is presented with the minimum and ideal instrumentation requirements for the AD process. Improved monitoring is achieved through soft sensor development for volatile solids (VS), an important variable that is currently only monitored offline. The inferential sensor is developed using data from an industrial process and compared with the results from a simulation study where feed flow and biogas production rate are used for modelling VS. This theme of improving monitoring with inferential sensors is continued with development of soft sensors with microbial data and data from different reactor designs

There exist some horizontal tools that allow us to train students with excellent technical skills, and that can be applied to a wide range of areas such as environment, genetics, animal and vegetal improvement, food processing or pest control. On these grounds we have been led to draw up a Master programme that has four clearly defined modules: one with methodology courses and three with basic courses.     Power outages in Europe and North America in recent years have given a lasting impression of the vulnerability of modern and high-tech societies. Although the power supply was interrupted for a week at most and only locally, massive functional and supply disruptions, threats to public order and damage amounting to billions of euros have already become apparent. This book shows what consequences a prolonged and widespread power blackout could have on society and its critical infrastructures and how Germany is prepared for such a large-scale disaster. By means of comprehensive consequence analyses, the authors drastically demonstrate that after only a few days, the supply of the population with (vital) goods and services can no longer be guaranteed in the affected area.
