Associative conceptual space-based information retrieval systems
In this `Information Era' with the availability of large collections of books, articles, journals, CD-ROMs, video films and so on, there exists an increasing need for intelligent information retrieval systems that enable users to find the information desired easily. Many attempts have been made to construct such retrieval systems, including the electronic ones used in libraries and including the search engines for the World Wide Web. In many cases, however, the so-called `precision' and `recall' of these systems leave much to be desired.
In this paper, a new AI-based retrieval system is proposed, inspired by, among other things, the WEBSOM-algorithm. However, contrary to that approach where domain knowledge is extracted from the full text of all books, we propose a system where certain specific meta-information is automatically assembled using only the index of every document. This knowledge extraction process results into a new type of concept space, the so-called Associative Conceptual Space where the `concepts' as found in all documents are clustered using a Hebbian-type of learning algorithm. Then, each document can be characterised by comparing the concepts as occurring in it to those present in the associative conceptual space. Applying these characterisations, all documents can be clustered such that semantically similar documents lie close together on a Self-Organising Map. This map can easily be inspected by its user
Semantic web technology to support learning about the semantic web
This paper describes ASPL, an Advanced Semantic Platform for Learning, designed using the Magpie framework with an aim to support students learning about the Semantic Web research area. We describe the evolution of ASPL and illustrate how we used the results from a formal evaluation of the initial system to re-design the user functionalities. The second version of ASPL semantically interprets the results provided by a non-semantic web mining tool and uses them to support various forms of semantics-assisted exploration, based on pedagogical strategies such as performing later reasoning steps and problem space filtering

It is to analyse the presence of twin memory among the various memory systems, and also to provide a platform for the twin memory “anatomy” in the field of cognitive science, neuropsychology and neuroscience
The Most Influential Paper Gerard Salton Never Wrote
Gerard Salton is often credited with developing the vector space model
(VSM) for information retrieval (IR). Citations to Salton give the impression
that the VSM must have been articulated as an IR model sometime between
1970 and 1975. However, the VSM as it is understood today evolved over a
longer time period than is usually acknowledged, and an articulation of the
model and its assumptions did not appear in print until several years after
those assumptions had been criticized and alternative models proposed. An
often cited overview paper titled ???A Vector Space Model for Information
Retrieval??? (alleged to have been published in 1975) does not exist, and
citations to it represent a confusion of two 1975 articles, neither of which
were overviews of the VSM as a model of information retrieval. Until the
late 1970s, Salton did not present vector spaces as models of IR generally
but rather as models of specifi c computations. Citations to the phantom
paper refl ect an apparently widely held misconception that the operational
features and explanatory devices now associated with the VSM must have

Encoding Sequential Information in Vector Space Models of Semantics: Comparing Holographic Reduced Representation and Random Permutation
Encoding information about the order in which words typically appear has been shown to improve the performance of high-dimensional semantic space models. This requires an encoding operation capable of binding together vectors in an order-sensitive way, and efficient enough to scale to large text corpora. Although both circular convolution and random permutations have been enlisted for this purpose in semantic models, these operations have never been systematically compared. In Experiment 1 we compare their storage capacity and probability of correct retrieval; in Experiments 2 and 3 we compare their performance on semantic tasks when integrated into existing models. We conclude that random permutations are a scalable alternative to circular convolution with several desirable properties
Japanese/English Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Exploration of Query Translation and Transliteration
Cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), where queries and documents are
in different languages, has of late become one of the major topics within the
information retrieval community. This paper proposes a Japanese/English CLIR
system, where we combine a query translation and retrieval modules. We
currently target the retrieval of technical documents, and therefore the
performance of our system is highly dependent on the quality of the translation
of technical terms. However, the technical term translation is still
problematic in that technical terms are often compound words, and thus new
terms are progressively created by combining existing base words. In addition,
Japanese often represents loanwords based on its special phonogram.
Consequently, existing dictionaries find it difficult to achieve sufficient
coverage. To counter the first problem, we produce a Japanese/English
dictionary for base words, and translate compound words on a word-by-word
basis. We also use a probabilistic method to resolve translation ambiguity. For
the second problem, we use a transliteration method, which corresponds words
unlisted in the base word dictionary to their phonetic equivalents in the
target language. We evaluate our system using a test collection for CLIR, and
show that both the compound word translation and transliteration methods
improve the system performance
Self-directedness, integration and higher cognition
In this paper I discuss connections between self-directedness, integration and higher cognition. I present a model of self-directedness as a basis for approaching higher cognition from a situated cognition perspective. According to this model increases in sensorimotor complexity create pressure for integrative higher order control and learning processes for acquiring information about the context in which action occurs. This generates complex articulated abstractive information processing, which forms the major basis for higher cognition. I present evidence that indicates that the same integrative characteristics found in lower cognitive process such as motor adaptation are present in a range of higher cognitive process, including conceptual learning. This account helps explain situated cognition phenomena in humans because the integrative processes by which the brain adapts to control interaction are relatively agnostic concerning the source of the structure participating in the process. Thus, from the perspective of the motor control system using a tool is not fundamentally different to simply controlling an arm
The Role of Consciousness in Memory
Conscious events interact with memory systems in learning, rehearsal and retrieval (Ebbinghaus 1885/1964; Tulving 1985). Here we present hypotheses that arise from the IDA computional model (Franklin, Kelemen and McCauley 1998; Franklin 2001b) of global workspace theory (Baars 1988, 2002). Our primary tool for this exploration is a flexible cognitive cycle employed by the IDA computational model and hypothesized to be a basic element of human cognitive processing. Since cognitive cycles are hypothesized to occur five to ten times a second and include interaction between conscious contents and several of the memory systems, they provide the means for an exceptionally fine-grained analysis of various cognitive tasks. We apply this tool to the small effect size of subliminal learning compared to supraliminal learning, to process dissociation, to implicit learning, to recognition vs. recall, and to the availability heuristic in recall. The IDA model elucidates the role of consciousness in the updating of perceptual memory, transient episodic memory, and procedural memory. In most cases, memory is hypothesized to interact with conscious events for its normal functioning. The methodology of the paper is unusual in that the hypotheses and explanations presented are derived from an empirically based, but broad and qualitative computational model of human cognition
