    Symbolic management and the glass cliff. Evidence from the boardroom careers of female and male directors

    This paper uses archival board data to demonstrate that women who take positions as directors of UK companies have shorter tenures than their male counterparts. We show that female directors face a much higher risk of dismissal as they approach nine years of service on the board when their long service deprives them of the all-important classifi- cation as ‘independent’. At this point, their position on the board becomes precarious. Male directors do not suffer the same increase in boardroom exit. This gender-specific difference is shown to be clearly linked to the independence status. It is argued that these observations are consistent with the notion that female directors are being used in the symbolic management of corporate governance and that at nine years, when the cloak of independence disappears, women directors are then exposed to the biases that arise from role congruity issues

    Low prevalence of patients diagnosed with psoriasis in Nuuk:a call for increased awareness of chronic skin disease in Greenland

    The objective of this study was to estimate the age- and gender-specific prevalence of psoriasis in Nuuk. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the common risk factors and comorbidities for patients with psoriasis compared to an age- and gender-matched control group. The study was designed as a cross- sectional case-control study based on national high-quality data from medical and population registers in Nuuk. A total of 175 patients (0.9%) were diagnosed with psoriasis in Nuuk by January 1 January 2022, of which 79 were females and 96 were males. The prevalence of patients diagnosed with psoriasis in the adult population aged 20 years old or more in Nuuk was 1.1%. No overall gender-specific difference in prevalence was observed. Chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and obstructive lung disease were observed more frequently among patients with diagnosed psoriasis (28.6%) in Nuuk compared to controls (20.9%) (p < 0.05). We found a low prevalence of patients with psoriasis in Nuuk. We speculate that the prevalence found in this study is underestimated and thus, call for increased awareness of chronic skin disease in Nuuk, Greenland. Chronic co-morbidity to psoriasis was common

    Perception of Alcoholic Intoxication in Speech

    The ALC sub-challenge of the Interspeech Speaker State Chal-lenge (ISSC) aims at the automatic classification of speech sig-nals into intoxicated and sober speech. In this context we con-ducted a perception experiment on data derived from the same corpus to analyze the human performance on the same task. The results show that human still outperform comparable baseline results of ISSC. Female and male listeners perform on the same level, but there is strong evidence that intoxication in female voices is easier to be recognized than in male voices. Prosodic features contribute to the decision of human listeners but seem not to be dominant. In analogy to Doddington’s zoo of speaker verification we find some evidence for the existence of lambs and goats but no wolves.     Gender-specific ischemic tissue tolerance in critically perfused skin

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine gender-specific differences in the development of necrosis in persistent ischemic tissue and to analyze whether differences are due to gender-specific loss of vascular reactivity or change in ischemic tolerance. Methods: Hairless mice (skh-1) of both genders were assigned to three groups of adolescent, adult, and senescent age. Critical ischemia was induced by transection of the two distal pedicles of the animal's ear. Microcirculation was assessed over a 5-day period using intravital epifluorescence microscopy. Tissue necrosis, blood flow, functional capillary density (FCD), red blood cell (RBC) velocity, and capillary diameter were analyzed. Results: Induction of persistent ischemia caused an age-dependent demarcation of nonperfused flap tissue. Adult and senescent females developed markedly more necrosis than age-matched males (49 ± 1% vs. 37 ± 3% and 53 ± 3% vs. 44 ± 2%, respectively; p < 0.05), whereas no gender-specific difference in flap necrosis was observed in adolescent animals (31 ± 2% vs. 33 ± 3%). Gender did not affect the amount of microcirculatory dysfunction in the flap. Thus, age-matched females and males exhibited a comparable decrease of FCD, RBC velocity, and capillary dilatory response. Conclusions: Both age and female gender may predispose for an increased susceptibility to develop ischemic tissue necrosis.     Upregulation of cardioprotective SUR2A by sub-hypoxic drop in oxygen

    AbstractThe effects of hypoxia on gene expression have been vigorously studied, but possible effects of small changes in oxygen tension have never been addressed. SUR2A is an atypical ABC protein serving as a regulatory subunit of sarcolemmal ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) channels. Up-regulation of SUR2A is associated with cardioprotection and improved physical endurance. Here, we have found that a 24h-long exposure to slightly decreased ambient fractional concentration of oxygen (20% oxygen), which is an equivalent to oxygen tension at 350m above sea level, significantly increased levels of SUR2A in the heart despite that this drop of oxygen did not affect levels of O2, CO2 and hematocrit in the blood or myocardial levels of ATP, lactate and NAD/NADH/NAD+. Hearts from mice exposed to 20% oxygen were significantly more resistant to ischaemia-reperfusion when compared to control ones. Decrease in fractional oxygen concentration of just 0.9% was associated with phosphorylation of ERK1/2, but not Akt, which was essential for up-regulation of SUR2A. These findings indicate that a small drop in oxygen tension up-regulates SUR2A in the heart by activating ERK signaling pathway. This is the first report to suggest that a minimal change in oxygen tension could have a profound signaling effect

    Sleep disturbance and serum ferritin levels associate with high impulsivity and impulse control disorders in male Parkinson\u27s Disease patients

    Impulse control disorders (ICDs) occur in a subset of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients on dopaminergic medications however there are currently no reliable markers to identify patients at risk. Sleep disturbances are more common in patients with an ICD. Serum ferritin levels have been associated with PD disease stage and progression, but have not previously been associated with impulsivity levels. The objective of this study was to determine if serum ferritin levels and sleep disturbance are associated with high traits of impulsivity and ICD in a cohort of PD patients attending a movement disorders clinic. This study assessed impulsiveness in 87 PD patients using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Severity of sleep disturbance was determined using the sleep-related items of the MDS-UPDRS. Serum ferritin, iron and transferrin levels were measured in patients, as well as 36 age-matched healthy controls. Serum ferritin levels were significantly elevated in male PD patients in the high impulsivity group compared to patients in the low (p=.022) and normal range groups (p=.024) and showed a linear increase across the three groups. Sleep disturbance also demonstrated a linear trend, which was most severe in the high impulsivity group (p=.030). A subgroup of 11 male PD patients who fulfilled the DSM-5 criteria for an ICD had significantly higher ferritin levels and more severe sleep disturbance when compared with the remaining male PD cohort. Serum ferritin levels and sleep disturbance severity are highlighted as potential markers for abnormal impulsivity and ICD in PD patients
