Human factors in entertainment computing: designing for diversity
Although several casual gaming systems have been developed during the past years, little research examining the impact of human factors on the design and use of digital games has been carried out, and commercially available games are only partially suitable for audiences with special needs. The research project described within this paper aims to analyze and explore design guidelines for diverse audiences and results of focus group gaming sessions to develop a research toolbox allowing for the easy creation of adaptable and accessible game scenarios. Thereby, a controllable environment for the detailed evaluation of the interrelations between human factors and entertainment systems is provided. Results obtained by further testing will be integrated in the toolbox, and may foster the development of accessible games, thus opening up new opportunities for diverse audiences and allowing them to further engage in digital games. Personas versus clones for player decision modelling
The current paper investigates how to model human play styles. Building on decision and persona theory we evolve game playing agents representing human decision making styles. Two methods are developed, applied, and compared: procedural personas, based on utilities designed with expert knowledge, and clones, trained to reproduce play traces. Additionally, two metrics for comparing agent and human decision making styles are proposed and compared. Results indicate that personas evolved from designer intuitions can capture human decision making styles equally well as clones evolved from human play traces.peer-reviewe
Automated Personal Authentication Using Both Palmprints
Abstract. To satisfy personal interests, different entertainment computing should be performed for different people (called personal entertainment computing). For personal entertainment computing, the personal identity should be first automatically authenticated. This paper proposes a novel approach for automated personal authentication by using both palmprints. The experimental results show that the fusion of the information of both palmprints can dramatically improve the authentication accuracy
Evolving Aesthetic Maps for a Real Time Strategy Game

been able to generate aesthetic maps for a real-time strategy game. The
maps has been characterized based on several of their properties in order
to de ne a similarity function between scenarios. This function has guided
a multi-objective evolution strategy during the process of generating and
evolving scenarios that are similar to other aesthetic maps while being
di erent to a set of non-aesthetic scenarios. The solutions have been
checked using a support-vector machine classi er and a self-organizing
map obtaining successful results (generated maps have been classi ed as
aesthetic maps)

and it is the main driving force when designing educational activities during early childhood. This paper
presents a review of the current state of the art of game technologies that support pre-kindergarten and
kindergarten children development. Moreover, the most emergent technologies for developing educational
games for preschool children are identified and a set of future challenges are discussed. The main
goal of this work is to review the state of the art in interactive technologies which will help educators,
game designers and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) experts in the area of game-based kindergarten
instruction.

Meaning in life as a source of entertainment
In this paper we mean to introduce into the field of entertainment computing an overview of insights concerning fundamental human needs. Researchers such as Hassenzahl and Desmet, discuss design approaches based on psychological insights from various and varied sources. We collect these and expand them with a focus on meaning in life as seen in humanistic philosophy. We summarise the various roles that these insights can play in our research on new technology, and illustrate the discussion with examples from the field of computer entertainment
A bibliometric study of the research area of videogames using Dimensions.ai database
Videogames are a very interesting area of research for fields as diverse as computer science, health, psychology or even social sciences. Every year a growing number of articles are published in different topics inside this field, so it is very convenient to study the different bibliometric data in order to consolidate the research efforts.
Thus, the aim of this work is to conduct a study on the distribution of articles related to videogames in the different fields of research, as well as to measure their interest over time, to identify the sources, countries and authors with the highest scientific production. In order to carry out this analysis, the information system Dimensions.ai has been considered, since it covers a large number of documents and allows for easy downloading and analysis of datasets.
According to the study, three countries are the most prolific in this area: USA, Canada and UK. The obtained results also indicate that the fields with the highest number of publications are Information and Computer Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, and Psychology and Cognitive Sciences, in this order. With regard to the impact of the publications, differences between the number of citations, and the number of Altmetric Attention Score, have been found
