Network-based business process management: embedding business logic in communications networks
Advanced Business Process Management (BPM) tools enable the decomposition of previously integrated and often ill-defined processes into re-usable process modules. These process modules can subsequently be distributed on the Internet over a variety of many different actors, each with their own specialization and economies-of-scale. The economic benefits of process specialization can be huge. However, how should such actors in a business network find, select, and control, the best partner for what part of the business process, in such a way that the best result is achieved? This particular management challenge requires more advanced techniques and tools in the enabling communications networks. An approach has been developed to embed business logic into the communications networks in order to optimize the allocation of business resources from a network point of view. Interworking Architectures in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks: An Algorithmic Overview
The scarce availability of spectrum and the proliferation of
smartphones, social networking applications, online gaming
etc., mobile network operators (MNOs) are faced with an
exponential growth in packet switched data requirements on
their networks. Haven invested in legacy systems (such as
HSPA, WCDMA, WiMAX, Cdma2000, LTE, etc.) that have
hitherto withstood the current and imminent data usage
demand, future and projected usage surpass the capabilities of the evolution of these individual technologies. Hence, a more critical, cost-effective and flexible approach to provide ubiquitous coverage for the user using available spectrum is of high demand. Heterogeneous Networks make use of these legacy systems by allowing users to connect to the best network available and most importantly seamlessly handover active sessions amidst them. Context-aware information delivery for mobile construction workers
The potential of mobile Information Technology (IT) applications to support the
information needs of mobile construction workers has long been understood.
However, existing mobile IT applications in the construction industry have
underlined limitations, including their inability to respond to the changing user
context, lack of semantic awareness and poor integration with the desktop-based
infrastructure. This research argues that awareness of the user context (such as user
role, preferences, task-at-hand, location, etc.) can enhance mobile IT applications in
the construction industry by providing a mechanism to deliver highly specific
information to mobile workers by intelligent interpretation of their context. Against this
this background, the aim of this research was to investigate the applicability of
context-aware information delivery (CAID) technologies in the construction industry.
The research methodology adopted consisted of various methods. A literature review
on context-aware and enabling technologies was undertaken and a conceptual
framework developed, which addressed the key issues of context-capture, contextinference
and context-integration. To illustrate the application of CAID in realistic
construction situations, five futuristic deployment scenarios were developed which
were analysed with several industry and technology experts. From the analysis, a
common set of user needs was drawn up. These needs were subsequently translated
into the system design goals, which acted as a key input to the design and evaluation
of a prototype system, which was implemented on a Pocket-PC platform.
The main achievements of this research include development of a CAID framework
for mobile construction workers, demonstration of CAID concepts in realistic
construction scenarios, analysis of the Construction industry needs for CAID and
implementation and validation of the prototype to demonstrate the CAID concepts.
The research concludes that CAID has the potential to significantly improve support
for mobile construction workers and identifies the requirements for its effective
deployment in the construction project delivery process. However, the industry needs
to address various identified barriers to enable the realisation of the full potential of
CAID

Applications of agent architectures to decision support in distributed simulation and training systems
This work develops the approach and presents the results of a new model for applying intelligent agents to complex distributed interactive simulation for command and control. In the framework of tactical command, control communications, computers and intelligence (C4I), software agents provide a novel approach for efficient decision support and distributed interactive mission training. An agent-based architecture for decision support is designed, implemented and is applied in a distributed interactive simulation to significantly enhance the command and control training during simulated exercises. The architecture is based on monitoring, evaluation, and advice agents, which cooperate to provide alternatives to the dec ision-maker in a time and resource constrained environment. The architecture is implemented and tested within the context of an AWACS Weapons Director trainer tool.
The foundation of the work required a wide range of preliminary research topics to be covered, including real-time systems, resource allocation, agent-based computing, decision support systems, and distributed interactive simulations. The major contribution of our work is the construction of a multi-agent architecture and its application to an operational decision support system for command and control interactive simulation. The architectural design for the multi-agent system was drafted in the first stage of the work. In the next stage rules of engagement, objective and cost functions were determined in the AWACS (Airforce command and control) decision support domain. Finally, the multi-agent architecture was implemented and evaluated inside a distributed interactive simulation test-bed for AWACS Vv\u27Ds. The evaluation process combined individual and team use of the decision support system to improve the performance results of WD trainees.
The decision support system is designed and implemented a distributed architecture for performance-oriented management of software agents. The approach provides new agent interaction protocols and utilizes agent performance monitoring and remote synchronization mechanisms. This multi-agent architecture enables direct and indirect agent communication as well as dynamic hierarchical agent coordination. Inter-agent communications use predefined interfaces, protocols, and open channels with specified ontology and semantics. Services can be requested and responses with results received over such communication modes. Introducing the new paradigm of Social Dispersed Computing: Applications, Technologies and Challenges
[EN] If last decade viewed computational services as a utility then surely
this decade has transformed computation into a commodity. Computation
is now progressively integrated into the physical networks in
a seamless way that enables cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the
Internet of Things (IoT) meet their latency requirements. Similar to
the concept of ¿platform as a service¿ or ¿software as a service¿, both
cloudlets and fog computing have found their own use cases. Edge
devices (that we call end or user devices for disambiguation) play the
role of personal computers, dedicated to a user and to a set of correlated
applications. In this new scenario, the boundaries between
the network node, the sensor, and the actuator are blurring, driven
primarily by the computation power of IoT nodes like single board
computers and the smartphones. The bigger data generated in this
type of networks needs clever, scalable, and possibly decentralized
computing solutions that can scale independently as required. Any
node can be seen as part of a graph, with the capacity to serve as a
computing or network router node, or both. Complex applications can
possibly be distributed over this graph or network of nodes to improve
the overall performance like the amount of data processed over time.
In this paper, we identify this new computing paradigm that we call
Social Dispersed Computing, analyzing key themes in it that includes
a new outlook on its relation to agent based applications. We architect
this new paradigm by providing supportive application examples that
include next generation electrical energy distribution networks, next
generation mobility services for transportation, and applications for
distributed analysis and identification of non-recurring traffic congestion
in cities. The paper analyzes the existing computing paradigms
(e.g., cloud, fog, edge, mobile edge, social, etc.), solving the ambiguity
of their definitions; and analyzes and discusses the relevant foundational
software technologies, the remaining challenges, and research

A Software Product Line Approach to Ontology-based Recommendations in E-Tourism Systems
This study tackles two concerns of developers of Tourism Information Systems (TIS). First is the need for more dependable recommendation services due to the intangible nature of the tourism product where it is impossible for customers to physically evaluate the services on offer prior to practical experience. Second is the need to manage dynamic user requirements in tourism due to the advent of new technologies such as the semantic web and mobile computing such that etourism systems (TIS) can evolve proactively with emerging user needs at minimal time and
development cost without performance tradeoffs.
However, TIS have very predictable characteristics and are functionally identical in most cases with minimal variations which make them attractive for software product line development. The Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) paradigm enables the strategic and systematic reuse
of common core assets in the development of a family of software products that share some degree of commonality in order to realise a significant improvement in the cost and time of development. Hence, this thesis introduces a novel and systematic approach, called Product Line
for Ontology-based Tourism Recommendation (PLONTOREC), a special approach focusing on the creation of variants of TIS products within a product line. PLONTOREC tackles the
aforementioned problems in an engineering-like way by hybridizing concepts from ontology engineering and software product line engineering. The approach is a systematic process model consisting of product line management, ontology engineering, domain engineering, and application engineering. The unique feature of PLONTOREC is that it allows common TIS product requirements to be defined, commonalities and differences of content in TIS product
variants to be planned and limited in advance using a conceptual model, and variant TIS products to be created according to a construction specification. We demonstrated the novelty in this approach using a case study of product line development of e-tourism systems for three countries
in the West-African Region of Africa
