An investigation of the relation of space to society: a discussion on A. Giddens, H. Lefebvre and space syntax

This thesis is dealing with the relation of society and space as a main characteristic for elucidating the design process. More particular is based on the problem which appears both in spatial and social theories of relating entities which ‘are in different scales’. This is the relation of space, which is a local notion, to society, which is a global idea or the relation of society to the everyday life, which is also local and spatial. Thιs thesis attempts to investigate the relation of society to space through this core problem by examining three theories which seem to deal with this issue. These are the Space Syntax Theory of Hillier and Hanson, the Structuration theory of Giddens and the theory of the Production of Space of Lefebvre. The first has an architectural and urban point of view of the matter, the second a sociological and the third a politico-economic. The discussion of the three theories shows that all three grasp an interrelation between society and space although each theory sees this interrelation in a different way. For the Structuration theory space has an important role in the structuration of society, for Space Syntax a constructive role of the generic forms of society and for Lefebvre an instrumental character

Playing outside the box:transformative works and computer games as participatory culture

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study is to examine the creative fan community as a paradigm of participatory culture, from a computer games perspective. A review of relevant literature is used to examine transformative works and the related subculture in its many diverse forms. The produced discussion seeks to respond to a number of questions, such as: What exactly constitutes transformative work, what is the legal status of such work, and how can it be improved? To what extent do transformative works constitute a part of the play experience and enjoyment of games? Does participation in associated creative activities influence, shape or redefine the aforementioned experience? Can transformative works be appreciated as valuable artistic pieces on their own merits, outside the communities in which they are produced? Does the existence of the transformative work benefit the wider gaming culture from an artistic, financial or other point of view

Gestures - Emotions Interaction: e-Viographima application for visual artistic synthesis

    Get PDF
This study aims at developing an application, called “E-Viographima”, for real time artistic synthesis that utilises low-cost human-computer interaction devices. The diverse possibilities of artistic expression are approached through variations of visual stimuli whose parameters are altered according to motion captured data recorded while the users wag their hands, together with concurrent emotional states derived from the users’ brain activity. The hands’ movements are recorded by a motion capture system (Leap Motion) and four different emotional states are identified through electroencephalography signals (EEG) recorded by a brain signal detection headset (Emotiv Epoc). The primary scope of this project is to produce in real time a visualised output in the form of an interactive line that results in the creation of a synthesis out of contoured forms made by the automated and semi-automated elements

Architecture Diagrams: A Graphical Language for Architecture Style Specification

    Get PDF
Architecture styles characterise families of architectures sharing common characteristics. We have recently proposed configuration logics for architecture style specification. In this paper, we study a graphical notation to enhance readability and easiness of expression. We study simple architecture diagrams and a more expressive extension, interval architecture diagrams. For each type of diagrams, we present its semantics, a set of necessary and sufficient consistency conditions and a method that allows to characterise compositionally the specified architectures. We provide several examples illustrating the application of the results. We also present a polynomial-time algorithm for checking that a given architecture conforms to the architecture style specified by a diagram.Comment: In Proceedings ICE 2016, arXiv:1608.0313

The monstrous transformation of the self:translating Japanese cyberpunk and the posthuman into the living world

This essay offers an extended, tangential reading of the cyberpunk videogame, Final Fantasy VII. I will examine itsliterary and visual motifs, patterns and codes, putting these in dialogue with a participant study on cosplay and transformative fandom related to the game. The central philosophical questions that permeate the game will be examined in relation to one of the game’s characters, Vincent Valentine. I will then outline the processes involved in reproducing and embodying this character in the context of cosplay. The essay is structured to partially mimic a line of thought commonly observed within creative fandom, where the dissection of the media text serves to inform artistic practice. The textual analysis of Final Fantasy’s VII’s mythos, plot and Vincent Valentine’s character represent an integral part of the process involved in the conception, creation and construction of my cosplay performance

Longitudinal study on the influence of Nd:YAG laser irradiation on microleakage associated of two filling techniques.

Objective: This study investigates the effects of Nd:YAG laser irradiation on apical and coronal seals, when used prior to two root canal filling techniques. Background Data: Limited information exists regarding the effects of morphologic changes to dentin walls following Nd: YAG laser irradiation on the sealing ability of root fillings. Methods: Two hundred forty teeth were analyzed by observing coronal and apical leakage of Indian ink (DL), and 60 were analyzed for through-and-through leakage using the fluid transport model (FTM). The Nd: YAG laser parameters were 1.5W, 100mJ, and 15Hz (four times for 5s at 20s intervals). Each group consisted of a lased and a nonlased subgroup: each subgroup had root fills done by either cold lateral condensation (CLC) or hybrid condensation (HC). Leakage was assessed after 48 h, and then at 1, 6, and 12 months. The DL group was divided into four groups of 15 teeth for each evaluation point. Through-and-through leakage (L in microliters/day) was measured for 48h under a pressure of 1.2 atm using FTM, and recorded as L = 0 (L1), 0 10 (L3). Results: Apical and coronal dye leakage was observed in all groups. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in apical leakage were found between HC and HC + Nd after 1, 6, and 12 months, and between CLC and CLC + Nd at 6 and 12 months. No significant differences were found between laser-irradiated and non-laser-irradiated groups with FTM. Conclusion: Pulsed Nd: YAG laser irradiation following root canal preparation may reduce apical leakage in association with hybrid gutta-percha condensation
