    Schema architecture and their relationships to transaction processing in distributed database systems

    We discuss the different types of schema architectures which could be supported by distributed database systems, making a clear distinction between logical, physical, and federated distribution. We elaborate on the additional mapping information required in architecture based on logical distribution in order to support retrieval as well as update operations. We illustrate the problems in schema integration and data integration in multidatabase systems and discuss their impact on query processing. Finally, we discuss different issues relevant to the cooperation (or noncooperation) of local database systems in a heterogeneous multidatabase system and their relationship to the schema architecture and transaction processing

    Flexible cooperation in non-standard application environments

    The integration of preexisting systems into a single, heterogeneous, distributed non-standard application system in domains like office automation or computer-integrated manufacturing are regarded as cooperating systems. They are characterized through teamwork, distribution and the handling of complex data structures (e.g. multimedia data). Object-oriented database systems, providing for complex object management, represent one approach in support of such applications. They concentrate, however, on data modeling aspects and use more or less conventional transaction concepts, based on a global execution control. Hence, they only partially fulfill application requirements as they do not adequately cope with the autonomy that is often inherent to the system's components. As a consequence, we suggest S-transactions as an appropriate means for describing the cooperation of system components in terms of transactions and beyond. In this paper we outline the modeling of conventional transactions (flat or nested as well as distributed and design transactions) in terms of STDL, the S-transaction definition language. Beyond that we point out how to specify SAGAs and similar concepts.     A comparative study of transaction management services in multidatabase heterogeneous systems

    Multidatabases are being actively researched as a relatively new area in which many aspects are not yet fully understood. This area of transaction management in multidatabase systems still has many unresolved problems. The problem areas which this dissertation addresses are classification of multidatabase systems, global concurrency control, correctness criterion in a multidatabase environment, global deadlock detection, atomic commitment and crash recovery. A core group of research addressing these problems was identified and studied. The dissertation contributes to the multidatabase transaction management topic by introducing an alternative classification method for such multiple database systems; assessing existing research into transaction management schemes and based on this assessment, proposes a transaction processing model founded on the optimal properties of transaction management identified during the course of this research.ComputingM.     Transactional Agents for Pervasive Computing

    Pervasive computing enables seamless integration of computing technology into everyday life to make upto- date information and services proactively available to the users based on their needs and behaviors. We aim to develop a transaction management scheme as a pertinent component for such environment supported by either structured or ad hoc networks. We propose Transactional Agents for Pervasive COmputing (TAPCO), which utilizes a dynamic hierarchical meta data structure that captures the semantic contents of the underlying heterogeneous data sources. Mobile agents process the transactions collaboratively, to preserve ACID properties without violating local autonomy of the data sources. TAPCO is simulated and compared against Decentralized Serialization Graph Testing (DSGT) protocol. The results show that TAPCO outperforms DSGT in several ways. In contrast to DSGT that did not consider local transactions, TAPCO supports both local and global transactions without violating the local autonomy

    High level communication by means of the exchange of messages between different organizations or organizational units is studied. The concepts of business transaction and business transaction protocol are discussed. Message exchanges are controlled by a message handler that enforces a transaction protocol. The design and implementation of a generic message handler is described. The design is independent of a specific application. It offers a flexible implementation of protocols: dedicated subprocesses handle each message type. Changes in a protocol can easily be accommodated by adapting the subprocesses. A prototype has been written in the executable specification language ExSpect. The protocols can be validated by simulating the message exchange for a number of cases. As an application of the prototype, a party in a logistic chain using EDI is described
