Korea, as well as other developed countries in the field of information technology, is making various efforts to enhance the industrial competitiveness, not to mention the competitiveness of information services, by constructing and utilizing a data model through private use of public data and production, distribution and utilization of data. The purpose of this study is to design an ontology for tourist information service and construct linked data for 44 public data held by the City of Seoul to enhance the tourist information service. To do this, we analyzed the attributes of domestic public and tourist information and examined data linkage method. In other words, we added classes and properties to express tourist information based on schema ontology to link the information with external data, and proposed a method of providing tourist information using the linked data. The results of this study can reduce the time and costs for various private and public organizations, which use tourist information, in acquiring the tourist information, and help improve the industrial competitiveness through distribution and utilization of public data

Harnessing Real Estate Investment through Proper Tenant Selection in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Purpose - The main objective of investment in real estate is to derive adequate returns from its ·management; selection of suitable tenants is one of the challenges to attaining this in Nigeria. Many prospective tenants of residential properties usually appear good at the recruitment stage but often become belligerent with grave challenge to the property managers. The paper aims to examine the criteria set by property managers in selecting residential tenants in Nigeria with a view to establishing a proper process for identification of potentially bad tenants at the recruitment stage. Design/methodology/approach - The paper opted for an exploratory study with questionnaires administered to estate surveyors (professional property managers in Nigeria). Respondents were randomly selected based on Bartlett et al's model with margin of error set at 0.05, p = 0.5, and !-value= 1.96. Relative importance index analysis of the data was carried out to determine the ranking of the criteria. Findings - The paper provides insight into tenant selection through proper process using a weighted scorecard. It suggests that an application of a scorecard will reduce the incidence of bad tenancy and enable investors to derive value from investment in real estate. Research limitations/implications - The framework of tenant selection process adopted was based on criteria set by the respondents; researchers are therefore encouraged to test the applicability of the suggested weighted scorecard. Practical implications - There are implications for development of computer software using the weighted scorecard to further ease the process of tenant selection and make it an inter-disciplinary study. Originality/value - This paper identified the need for proper tenant selection to enable investors in residential property to harness adequate and remunerative return

Information Extraction based on Named Entity for Tourism Corpus

Tourism information is scattered around nowadays. To search for the information, it is usually time consuming to browse through the results from search engine, select and view the details of each accommodation. In this paper, we present a methodology to extract particular information from full text returned from the search engine to facilitate the users. Then, the users can specifically look to the desired relevant information. The approach can be used for the same task in other domains. The main steps are 1) building training data and 2) building recognition model. First, the tourism data is gathered and the vocabularies are built. The raw corpus is used to train for creating vocabulary embedding. Also, it is used for creating annotated data. The process of creating named entity annotation is presented. Then, the recognition model of a given entity type can be built. From the experiments, given hotel description, the model can extract the desired entity,i.e, name, location, facility. The extracted data can further be stored as a structured information, e.g., in the ontology format, for future querying and inference. The model for automatic named entity identification, based on machine learning, yields the error ranging 8%-25%.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure

Digital Divide - A Challenge to the Real Estate Practice in Nigeria?

    Get PDF
Purpose - Digital divide is lack of access to and effective use of information and communication technology (ICT). It represents the difference between people with access to ICT and who use it effectively and those who do not. The aim of this study is to determine the level of digital divides amongst estate surveyors and valuers (recognized real estate practitioners in Nigeria). This is with a view to turning the identified digital divides into digital dividends for sustainable real estate practice in Nigeria and elsewhere. Design/methodology/approach - In attaining the aim, primary data were collected on 3,627 corporate members of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) with questionnaires administered through the internet using SurveyMonkey, an internet-based software complemented with bulk sms to alert them about posting of the questionnaires into their e-mail addresses. The Culbertson's constructs for evaluating digital awareness in the USA were adapted for inclusion in the survey instrument. The finding on the estate surveyors and valuers was also compared with those on comparable professionals in the building industry to determine if the respondents are lagging behind in adopting ICT. Findings - Based on the Culbertson's constructs, there is great digital divide between practising estate surveyors and valuers and their counterparts in advanced countries. The analysis indicated that 33.75 percent of the respondents were not committed to ICT, 26.25 percent were slightly committed, and at least 38.75 percent were somewhat committed; and the respondents were classified as "low-tech high-touch" professionals; and their level of ICT deployment found to be appropriate within the framework of the Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics. This implies that digital divide is not a challenge to real estate practice in Nigeria. Research limitations/implications -The study serves as good starting block for further analysis of the setting, challenges, and practice of real estate profession in Nigeria and elsewhere with regards to ICT applications. The research posited the implication for the NIESV to organize mandatory continued professional development workshops on ICT to remain relevant in the fast moving digital society. The IT requirements, current skill base, and curricula in the higher institutions were however not examined. It is therefore necessary to carry out further research on students and faculty in the higher institutions to identify the gaps in skill and technological capabilities. Originality/value - The findings help in specifying development activities that will enhance improvements in professional standards, build local capacity and improve transparency expected by international investors. Also, the findings provide professional bodies and policy-makers with indications to improve and ensure sustainable real estate professional practice through continuous and life-long training of members in ICT. It recommended capacity building, reviving of interests of practitioners, direct investment of software companies, and research as approaches to reducing the level of digital divide between practitioners in advanced countries and Nigeria in order to remain relevant in the technologically-driven and competitive worl

This portfolio thesis has three parts. Part one is a systematic literature review in which the existing research literature on the psychological and systemic factors that influence healthcare staff’s decision to whistleblow on poor care is examined and its quality evaluated. Part two is an empirical paper which uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA; Smith, 1996) to explore the experiences of families of people with intellectual disabilities when noticing and reporting concerns in healthcare services. Part three comprises the Appendices, containing supporting information relating to parts one and two and epistemological and reflective statements.Abstract - Systematic literature review:Purpose This systematic literature review aimed to investigate the psychological and systemic variables influencing whistleblowing decisions in healthcare settings. Design/methodology/approach A search of academic databases was undertaken and reference lists of the resulting articles were searched. In total 17 studies using a range of methodologies were analysed using Narrative Synthesis. Methodological quality was assessed. Findings Psychological variables were grouped into beliefs about advocacy and professional roles, fear and diverse responses to wrongdoing. Systemic variables were grouped into relationships with peers, the culture of the organisation and feedback, however there was a complex interplay of factors. Research Implications Further research is needed to examine the efficacy of these interventions and to represent the views of a wider range of healthcare professionals. Originality/value This was a timely review given recent reports on the treatment of whistleblowers in healthcare, indicating interventions to facilitate whistleblowing such as increasing the ease of reporting systems, providing feedback and creating a more compassionate organisational culture.Abstract : empirical paperBackground: This study aimed to increase understanding of the lived experiences of families of people with intellectual disabilities when noticing and raising concerns in services. A qualitative design was employed. Methods: Seven participants were recruited through local and national voluntary agencies; five were mothers of people with intellectual disabilities, one was the aunt and one the sister. Participants took part in semi structured interviews centred on their experiences of noticing and raising concerns, these were recorded and transcribed. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA; Smith, 1996). Results: The data was grouped into three overarching themes: relationships between staff, family and service user, the nature and importance of concerns and the process of raising concerns. Conclusions: This research highlights important implications for services such as the need to simplify the process of raising concerns, attend to the relationship with families and ensure advocacy services are available for those without family
