Patients’ expectations and satisfaction towards an Internet-based treatment for flying phobia: preliminary data

The treatment of choice for specific phobias is in vivo exposure. Despite the proven efficacy of this technique, it is linked to a number of limitations in its acceptation. Information and Communication Technologies (i.e., computerassisted exposure programs and Internet) could help to overcome these issues. However, to our knowledge, no other studies investigate the acceptability of an Internet-based treatment for Flying Phobia. The aim of this work is to offer data about the patients’ expectations and satisfaction towards NO-FEAR Airlines in a pilot study. The sample was composed by four participants residents in Spain (N=3) and Colombia (N=1). Participants completed the Treatment ExpectationSatisfaction Questionnaire, reporting high expectations (M=8.7; SD=.85) and satisfaction (M=9.4; SD=.44) about the treatment. In conclusion, NO-FEAR Airlines was a well accepted Internet-based Treatment for FP

Virtual reality for anxiety and stress-related disorders: A SWOT analysis

Virtual Reality (VR) Therapy has emerged in the 90s as an appealing way of delivering exposure treatment. Throughout these years, ample evidence has been published. Although there is an agreed consensus regarding its efficacy, currently a quick shift in the field is being experienced, especially due to the advent of off-the-shelf technology that is greatly facilitating its dissemination. In this context, theoretical discussions of the field appear as an important action in order to take stock of the mounting evidence that has been produced and the main challenges for the coming future. To stimulate the discussion in a burgeoning field, a SWOT analysis is proposed, which may help to map the field of VR therapy for anxiety and stress-related disorders. Overall, it is undoubted that VR appears as a well-established technology for the treatment of ASRD and the main challenges are in line with the possibility of hurdling the same obstacles that the whole field of clinical psychology and psychotherapy has to deal with: How to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice

Virtual and Augmented Reality Therapy Framework for Phobia Treatment

Phobias are a common type of anxiety disorder that affects a great number of people. Treating phobias is not always straightforward and require a significant effort from both the patient and the therapist. In recent years, Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy and Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy have emerged to help in phobia treatments by using virtual content. However, most available systems are not free and require expensive hardware. In this paper, we present a free and open-source framework for phobia treatment, designed for both the therapist and the patient. A Virtual Reality scenario for acrophobia (fear of heights) and an Augmented Reality scenario for arachnophobia were developed for validation.XVI Workshop Computación Gráfica, Imágenes y Visualización (WCGIV)Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Mindfulness Based Intervention for Needle Phobia: A Pilot Study of Dissociated Ego State Resolution

This pilot study was designed to investigate the efficacy of a mindfulness based intervention for the treatment of needle phobia. The research question was whether one session of the dissociated ego state [DES] trauma release intervention would result in significant and durable release of needle phobia. It was hypothesized that the process tested in this study may reduce needle phobia by locating, identifying, and engaging with a dissociated aspect of the psyche developed from earlier trauma. Six participants who self reported fear of needles and resulting avoidance of medical assistance completed one 60-minute, individual session of a mindfulness based protocol for the release of specific phobia. After the DES intervention session, all participants but one reported reduced subjective units of distress while holding the needle against their skin: reduction of 61% post-test, 71% at 3-month follow-up, and 70% at 6-month follow up. Results at 6-month follow-up were statistically significant despite small sample size. Future investigations should involve larger sample sizes, populations drawn from various settings, more facilitators and a randomized, waitlist group

The feasibility of an augment reality system to study the psychophysiological correlates of fear-related responses

    Get PDF
Previous studies have successfully used augmented reality (AR) as an aid to exposure-based treatments for anxiety disorders. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of these studies have measured the physiological correlates of the fear response, relying solely on self-reports and behavioral avoidance tests.publishe

Attitude Confidence and User Resistance for Purchasing Wearable Devices on VR: VR Headset Perspective

The Virtual Reality (VR) has been issued by IT business of the 21st century. There has been a quick diffusion of smart devices and applying various industrial sites. However, there is a lack of innovation resistance studies of influencing new technology’s adoption & diffusion including VR. The research questions follow. First, do attitude confidence and innovativeness resistance affect consumer intention to use? Next, what factors affect among brand, contents and the above variable like attitude confidence? Finally, are there different factors as functional characteristics in VR? This study collected data from respondents who have prior experiences taking VR headset in Korea. The result of this study explained that user innovation resistance (-) and attitude confidence (+) directly-opposed influence consumer intention to use VR headset. Especially, seeing that attitude confidence is highly strong effect to the Use intention. Thus, high-belied of attitude improve behavior intention in the innovative product
