Belief Change in Reasoning Agents: Axiomatizations, Semantics and Computations
The capability of changing beliefs upon new information in a rational and efficient way is crucial for an intelligent agent. Belief change therefore is one of the central research fields in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for over two decades. In the AI literature, two different kinds of belief change operations have been intensively investigated: belief update, which deal with situations where the new information describes changes of the world; and belief revision, which assumes the world is static. As another important research area in AI, reasoning about actions mainly studies the problem of representing and reasoning about effects of actions. These two research fields are closely related and apply a common underlying principle, that is, an agent should change its beliefs (knowledge) as little as possible whenever an adjustment is necessary. This lays down the possibility of reusing the ideas and results of one field in the other, and vice verse. This thesis aims to develop a general framework and devise computational models that are applicable in reasoning about actions. Firstly, I shall propose a new framework for iterated belief revision by introducing a new postulate to the existing AGM/DP postulates, which provides general criteria for the design of iterated revision operators. Secondly, based on the new framework, a concrete iterated revision operator is devised. The semantic model of the operator gives nice intuitions and helps to show its satisfiability of desirable postulates. I also show that the computational model of the operator is almost optimal in time and space-complexity. In order to deal with the belief change problem in multi-agent systems, I introduce a concept of mutual belief revision which is concerned with information exchange among agents. A concrete mutual revision operator is devised by generalizing the iterated revision operator. Likewise, a semantic model is used to show the intuition and many nice properties of the mutual revision operator, and the complexity of its computational model is formally analyzed. Finally, I present a belief update operator, which takes into account two important problems of reasoning about action, i.e., disjunctive updates and domain constraints. Sellars and Lewis on the Given and Empirical Knowledge
This chapter examines whether Lewisâs account of âthe givenâ is vulnerable to criticisms in terms of what Wilfrid Sellars called âthe Myth of the Given.â It is argued that the Myth of the Given involves several distinct aspects, but that Lewisâs given is not âmythicâ according to any of them. Lewis explicitly argues that the given only has an epistemological function insofar as it is interpreted. For that reason, it is epistemically efficacious for a conceptual framework only insofar as it is not epistemically independent of that framework. Hence Lewisâs given is not vulnerable to Sellarsian criticism

Reasoning about discrete and continuous noisy sensors and effectors in dynamical systems
Among the many approaches for reasoning about degrees of belief in the
presence of noisy sensing and acting, the logical account proposed by Bacchus,
Halpern, and Levesque is perhaps the most expressive. While their formalism is
quite general, it is restricted to fluents whose values are drawn from discrete
finite domains, as opposed to the continuous domains seen in many robotic
applications. In this work, we show how this limitation in that approach can be
lifted. By dealing seamlessly with both discrete distributions and continuous
densities within a rich theory of action, we provide a very general logical
specification of how belief should change after acting and sensing in complex

Inference Belief and Interpretation in Science
This monograph explores the deeply cognitive roots of human scientific quest. The process of making scientific inferences is continuous with the day-to-day inferential activity of individuals, and is predominantly inductive in nature. Inductive inference, which is fallible, exploratory, and open-ended, is of essential relevance in our incessant efforts at making sense of a complex and uncertain world around us, and covers a vast range of cognitive activities, among which scientific exploration constitutes the pinnacle.
Inductive inference has a personal aspect to it, being rooted in the cognitive unconscious of individuals, which has recently been found to be of paramount importance in a wide range of complex cognitive processes. One other major aspect of the process of inference making, including the making of scientific inferences, is the role of a vast web of beliefs lodged in the human mind, as also of a huge repertoire of heuristics, that constitute an important component of âunconscious intelligenceâ. Finally, human cognitive activity is dependent in a large measure on emotions and affects that operate mostly at an unconscious level. Of special importance in scientific inferential activity is the process of hypothesis making, which is examined in this book, along with the above aspects of inductive inference, at considerable depth.
The book focuses on the inadequacy of the viewpoint of naive realism in understanding the context-dependence of scientific theories, where a cumulative progress towards an ultimate truth about Nature appears to be too simplistic a generalization. It poses a critique to the commonly perceived image of science where it is seen as the last word in logic and objectivity, the latter in the double sense of being independent of individual psychological propensities and, at the same time, approaching a correct understanding of the workings of a mind-independent nature. Adopting the naturalist point of view, it examines the essential tension between the cognitive endeavors of individuals and scientific communities, immersed in belief systems and cultures, on the one hand, and the engagement with a mind-independent reality on the other. In the end, science emerges as an interpretation of nature, which is perceived by us only contextually, as successively emerging cross-sections of a limited scope and extent. Successive waves of theory building in science appear as episodic and kaleidoscopic changes in perspective as certain in-built borders are crossed, rather than as a cumulative progress towards some ultimate truth.
Based on current literature, I aim to set up, in the form of a plausible hypothesis, a framework for understanding the mechanisms underlying inductive inference in general and abduction in particular

Sellars's Core Critique of C. I. Lewis: Against the Equation of Aboutness with Givenness
Many have taken Sellarsâs critique of empiricism in âEmpiricism and the Philosophy of Mindâ (EPM) to be aimed at his teacher C. I. Lewis. But if so, why do the famous arguments of its opening sections carry so little force against Lewisâs views? Understandably, some respond by denying that Lewisâs epistemology is among the positions targeted by Sellars. But this is incorrect. Indeed, Sellars had earlier offered more trenchant (if already familiar) critiques of Lewisâs epistemology. What is original about EPM is that it criticizes empiricist positions like Lewisâs not because of their foundationalism, but because of their psychologism about meaning. Since psychologism turns out to be unacceptable by Lewisâs own lights, EPM has a compelling (if implicit) critique of Lewis to offer after all, one that strikes at the heart of his philosophical system
