Grammatical self, linguistic community and education of grownups: Cavell reads Emerson

The article discusses Stanley Cavell’s interpretation of Ralph Waldo Emerson with a focus on the concepts of individuality, self-acknowledgment, and Bildung as one’s education through reading, called “the education of grownups”. Beginning with Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance”, his critique of Descartes’ cogito is examined and the Emersonian alternative vision of acquiring individual existence is reconstructed. In this depiction, a solipsistic Cartesian account of man is replaced with a vision of the grammatical self, which is at the same time social, linguistic, and, as a result, literary. Creating the self proceeds through a critical discussion with the extant tradition and, besides self-acknowledgment, aims at contributing to the founding of a particular form of life (within a nation, a community). The two goals of creating the self—the individual and the social one—constitute for Emerson the core of the Bildung construed as the forming of a particular person. In this context, the Emersonian phrase of “new yet unapproachable America” is placed against the educational background, in which neither the individual self nor the communal we are ever completely grasped. The distinctive feature of such Bildung is that it is not confined to the process of one’s growing up, but extends to the life of adults and, as a result, finds its realisation within “the education of grownups”. Accordingly, the process of education assumes that one individual needs another as a teacher—who paradigmatically speaks to her via a literary text—to constantly be open to some unknown, possible direction of her development. When the Ordinary Meets the Jiggery‑Pokery: Towards a Wittgensteinian Reading of Lindgren’s Karlson on the Roof

The article is mainly concerned with philosophical interpretations of Astrid Lindgren’s Karlson books. Inspired by Gaare and Sjaastad’s reading of Pippi Longstocking, the article discusses the philosophical ideas embedded in Lindgren’s books about Pippi Longstocking, stressing, in particular, Lindgren’s implicit critique of Western culture. Next, an attempt is made unsuccessfully to locate the figure of Karlson of the Karlson trilogy (Karlson on the Roof, Karlson Flies Again and The World’s Best Karlson) in this critical context. Instead, it is shown that the figure of Karlson may be better understood in the context of the later Wittgenstein’s conception of language games. In such a reading, Karlson appears as a figure of the other. The otherness can be here understood as a distancing act from everyday language games, and the habits and Lebensformen that they function in. While the existing language games’ rules constitute the sphere of the ordinary, the deviation from them forms the sphere of unusualness, extra-ordinariness, otherness, or “jiggery-pokery,” to use Karlson’s words. Presenting such otherness to the reader implicitly serves two pedagogical goals. First, it acquaints children with possible forms of “being other.” Second, it opens a sphere of “whatifness”, that is, the account of what the world would look like if certain concepts, or practices, were different. YouTube Immersion as a Content Marketing of Experiences

This article describes YouTube as an immersive medium on a level not as much of interface operation as of communication practices driving attention engagement with the content as the main source of experiences. The operation of the service will be analysed with regard to both the interface along with the algorithm behind it, and user practices. This new approach — as compared to existing studies — is based on the proposition that immersion mechanisms be analysed through the lens of marketing pragmatics (content, organic and experimental marketing). Relying on critical reflection from the fields of media and cultural studies, one can identify certain technical and social factors to immersion — sensory activity but also engagement and absorption as a sort of game with the content. The predominant strategy for content dissemination, however, is to generate organic traffic. Content is understood here as an exchange medium for which the user’s attention is an equivalent, while content experience should strive to build lasting relationships with the channel-brand and the latter’s community. Despite the great potential for the building of engaged communities, one can still note some negative consequences of building communication communities on the basis of the logic of market exchange — immersion can lead to the construction of a closed, inward-looking social-value system

Zyskują one popularność w ostatnim czasie jako kolejny sposób podejścia do badań dzieciństwa, po badaniach na dzieciach, badaniach nad dziećmi i badaniach z dziećmi. W artykule przedstawiono genezę uczestniczących praktyk badawczych, przybliżono ich specyfikę oraz opisano procedurę badań prowadzonych przez dzieci. Kolejną podjętą kwestią są rozterki etyczne i metodologiczne towarzyszące partycypacyjnym badaniom dzieci. Funkcjonowanie Centrum Powiadamiania Ratunkowego we Wrocławiu: możliwości i oczekiwania

W pracy opisano zagadnienia związane z funkcjonowaniem Centrum Powiadamiania Ratunkowego (CPR) we Wrocławiu. Kwestie działalności CPR przedstawione zostały w kilku perspektywach: - Prawno-historycznej (formalne uregulowania stanowiące podstawę funkcjonowania CPR), - Organizacyjnej (organizacja działalności CPR) - Technicznej (zespół współpracujących urządzeń informatycznych i oprogramowania), - Osobowej (wymagania, umiejętności i trudności wykonywania zawodu Operatora Numeru Alarmowego). Głównym celem rozważań uczyniono możliwości CPR w zakresie obsługi zgłoszeń alarmowych kierowanych na numer 112. Uwagę skierowano poza tym na procedury przekazania informacji do podmiotów ratowniczych w ramach Systemu Wspomagania Dowodzenia Państwowego Ratownictwa Medycznego, Policji oraz Państwowej Straży Pożarnej. Niemiecka strategia adaptacji do zmian klimatu jako narzędzie polityki bezpieczeństwa

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie problematyki adaptacji do zmian klimatu w Niemczech w odniesieniu do polityki bezpieczeństwa tego kraju. Analizą objęta została treść, proces tworzenia, monitorowania i ewaluacji Niemieckiej Strategii Adaptacji do zmian klimatu, przyjętej przez rząd federalny w 2008 r. jako wynik zobowiązań międzynarodowych oraz krajowych potrzeb realizacji zadań z zakresu ochrony ludności. Z uwzględnieniem prognoz odnośnie przyszłych zmian środowiskowych wskazuje ona na sektory społeczno-gospodarcze szczególnie narażone na zmiany klimatu. Na przykładzie branży energetycznej i ochrony ludności autorka podjęła się znalezienia stycznych między polityką bezpieczeństwa a administracyjnie sterowanym procesem adaptacji. Analiza treści Białej Księgi z 2016 r. jako kluczowego dokumentu określającego ramy działania w zakresie zapewniania bezpieczeństwa RFN wykazała, że kwestie zmian klimatu i adaptacja do ich skutków stanowią punkt odniesienia dla działań ochronnych i prewencyjnych, podejmowanych przez służby w ramach realizacji przez nie odpowiedzialności za zapewnianie bezpieczeństwa w państwie

Szkice z teorii racjonalności komunikacyjnej: ujęcie transcendentalno-pragmatyczne

„Ludzkie instytucje powinny jako takie wynikać z rozumnej rozmowy” – oto jedna z piękniejszych i mądrzejszych sentencji, jakie pojawiły się w pismach filozoficznych ostatnich dekad dwudziestego wieku. Chętnie przywołuję tę sentencję i równie chętnie – w każdym możliwym kontekście – odwołuję się do jej autora, Karla Ottona Apla, jako teoretyka, który swym projektem transcendentalnej pragmatyki zainicjował większość wątków składających się sukcesywnie na filozoficzną teorię racjonalności komunikacyjnej. Czy rzeczywiście kształt naszego świata powinien wynikać z rozumnej rozmowy? Czy społeczne praktyki komunikacyjne wyznaczają granice dostępnej nam racjonalności? Czy w sferze etyki obligują nas normy konstytuujące warunki możliwości racjonalności komunikacyjnej? Czy kompetencja komunikacyjna stanowi o specyfice ludzkiego świata? To przykłady problemów, jakie mnoży przed sobą filozoficzna teoria racjonalności komunikacyjnej – problemów, z których każdy „otoczony” jest wianuszkiem kolejnych, równie fundamentalnych i trudnych pytań. Wszystkie one składają się na dzisiejszy kształt filozoficznej teorii racjonalności – ale o sposobie ich konceptualizowania nie decyduje już sama filozofia. To w dużej już mierze należy dziś do dyscyplin pozafilozoficznych – a te coraz śmielej anektują tradycyjne terytoria filozoficzne. Tak więc zarówno katalog problemów, jak i katalog obszarów tematycznych, w jakie uwikłana jest teoria racjonalności komunikacyjnej, wydaje się z istoty niewyczerpany. Ale mimo tego bogactwa (chciało by się powiedzieć: mimo wertykalnego i horyzontalnego „natłoku”) istnieje – jak sądzę – szansa, by teoria ta zachowała spójność, by jako teoria fundamentalna zachowała zarazem uniwersalny charakter. Taką szansę daje jej perspektywa transcendentalno-pragmatyczna, dają jej narzędzia, w jakie wyposaża transcendentalna pragmatyka. W zebranych w tym tomie tekstach starałam się więc konsekwentnie o to, by namysł nad poszczególnymi kwestiami z zakresu teorii racjonalności komunikacyjnej utrzymać w ryzach podejścia transcendentalno-pragmatycznego, i by – z drugiej strony – dzięki transcendentalnej pragmatyce adekwatnie uchwycić specyfikę (a przede wszystkim: rangę) racjonalności komunikacyjnej i zapewnić rzetelny dostęp do zagadnień szczególnie ważnych dla jej teoretycznej eksplikacji.
