When the noise ratio is high, rank order filters, such as the median filter for example, can produce unsatisfactory results. Better results can be obtained by applying the filter twice, which we call two-pass filtering. To further improve the performance, we develop an adaptive two-pass rank order filter. Between the passes of filtering, an adaptive process is used to detect irregularities in the spatial distribution of the estimated impulse noise. The adaptive process then selectively replaces some pixels changed by the first pass of filtering with their original observed pixel values. These pixels are then kept unchanged during the second filtering. In combination, the adaptive process and the sec ond filter eliminate more impulse noise and restore some pixels that are mistakenly altered by the first filtering. As a final result, the reconstructed image maintains a higher degree of fidelity and has a smaller amount of noise. The idea of adaptive two-pass processing can be applied to many rank order filters, such as a center-weighted median filter (CWMF), adaptive CWMF, lower-upper-middle filter, and soft-decision rank-order-mean filter. Results from computer simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of this type of adaptation using a number of basic rank order filters. This work was supported in part by CenSSIS, the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems, under the Engineering Research Centers Program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) under Award EEC-9986821, by an ARO MURI on Demining under Grant DAAG55-97-1-0013, and by the NSF under Award 0208548

The central goal of this dissertation is to design and model a smoothing filter based on the random single and mixed noise distribution that would attenuate the effect of noise while preserving edge details. Only then could robust, integrated and resilient edge detection methods be deployed to overcome the ubiquitous presence of random noise in images. Random noise effects are modeled as those that could emanate from impulse noise, Gaussian noise and speckle noise. In the first step, evaluation of methods is performed based on an exhaustive review on the different types of denoising methods which focus on impulse noise, Gaussian noise and their related denoising filters. These include spatial filters (linear, non-linear and a combination of them), transform domain filters, neural network-based filters, numerical-based filters, fuzzy based filters, morphological filters, statistical filters, and supervised learning-based filters. In the second step, switching adaptive median and fixed weighted mean filter (SAMFWMF) which is a combination of linear and non-linear filters, is introduced in order to detect and remove impulse noise. Then, a robust edge detection method is applied which relies on an integrated process including non-maximum suppression, maximum sequence, thresholding and morphological operations. The results are obtained on MRI and natural images. In the third step, a combination of transform domain-based filter which is a combination of dual tree – complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) and total variation, is introduced in order to detect and remove Gaussian noise as well as mixed Gaussian and Speckle noise. Then, a robust edge detection is applied in order to track the true edges. The results are obtained on medical ultrasound and natural images. In the fourth step, a smoothing filter, which is a feed-forward convolutional network (CNN) is introduced to assume a deep architecture, and supported through a specific learning algorithm, l2 loss function minimization, a regularization method, and batch normalization all integrated in order to detect and remove impulse noise as well as mixed impulse and Gaussian noise. Then, a robust edge detection is applied in order to track the true edges. The results are obtained on natural images for both specific and non-specific noise-level

Image is captured or noninheritable by any image capturing device like camera or scanner and then it is stored in the mass storage of the computer system. In many of these applications the existence of impulsive noise among the noninheritable pictures is one altogether common problems. This noise is characterized by spots on the image and is usually related to the innate image because of errors in image sensors and information transmission. Now-a-days there are numerous strategies that are offered to remove noise from digital images. Most of the novel methodology includes 2 stages: the primary stage is to find the noise within the image and the second stage is to eliminate the noise from the image. This paper explores the varied novel methods for the removal of noise from the digital images. The distinctive feature of the all the described filters is that offers well line, edge and detail preservation performance while, at the constant time, effectively removing noise from the input image. In later section, we present a short introduction for various strategies for noise reduction in digital images

GENETIC FUZZY FILTER BASED ON MAD AND ROAD TO REMOVE MIXED IMPULSE NOISE

In this thesis, a genetic fuzzy image filtering based on rank-ordered absolute differences (ROAD) and median of the absolute deviations from the median (MAD) is proposed. The proposed method consists of three components, including fuzzy noise detection system, fuzzy switching scheme filtering, and fuzzy parameters optimization using genetic algorithms (GA) to perform efficient and effective noise removal. Our idea is to utilize MAD and ROAD as measures of noise probability of a pixel. Fuzzy inference system is used to justify the degree of which a pixel can be categorized as noisy. Based on the fuzzy inference result, the fuzzy switching scheme that adopts median filter as the main estimator is applied to the filtering. The GA training aims to find the best parameters for the fuzzy sets in the fuzzy noise detection. From the experimental results, the proposed method has successfully removed mixed impulse noise in low to medium probabilities, while keeping the uncorrupted pixels less affected by the median filtering. It also surpasses the other methods, either classical or soft computing-based approaches to impulse noise removal, in MAE and PSNR evaluations. It can also remove salt-and-pepper and uniform impulse noise well

A multiresolution framework for local similarity based image denoising

In this paper, we present a generic framework for denoising of images corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise based on the idea of regional similarity. The proposed framework employs a similarity function using the distance between pixels in a multidimensional feature space, whereby multiple feature maps describing various local regional characteristics can be utilized, giving higher weight to pixels having similar regional characteristics. An extension of the proposed framework into a multiresolution setting using wavelets and scale space is presented. It is shown that the resulting multiresolution multilateral (MRM) filtering algorithm not only eliminates the coarse-grain noise but can also faithfully reconstruct anisotropic features, particularly in the presence of high levels of noise

Noise Suppression in Images by Median Filter

A new and efficient algorithm for high-density salt and pepper noise removal in images and videos is proposed. In the transmission of images over channels, images are corrupted by salt and pepper noise, due to faulty communications. Salt and Pepper noise is also referred to as Impulse noise. The objective of filtering is to remove the impulses so that the noise free image is fully recovered with minimum signal distortion. Noise removal can be achieved, by using a number of existing linear filtering techniques. We will deal with the images corrupted by salt-and-pepper noise in which the noisy pixels can take only the maximum or minimum values (i.e. 0 or 255 for 8-bit grayscale images)

Image Noise Suppression is a highly demanded approach in digital imaging systems design. Impulsive noise is one such noise, which is frequently encountered problem in acquistion, transmission and processing of images. In the area of image restoration, many state-of-the art filters consist of two main processes, classification (detection) and reconstruction (filtering). Classification is used to separate uncorrupted pixels from corrupted pixels. Reconstruction involves replacing the corrupted pixels by certain approximation technique. In this thesis such schemes of impulsive noise detection and filtering thereof are proposed. Impulsive noise can be Salt & Pepper Noise (SPN) or Random Valued Impulsive Noise (RVIN). Only RVIN model is considered in this thesis because of its realistic presence. In the RVIN model a corrupted pixel can take any value in the valid range. Adaptive threshold selection is emphasized for all the four proposed noise detection schemes. Incorporation of adaptive threshold into the noise detection process led to more reliable and more efficient detection of noise. Based on the noisy image characteristics and their statistics, threshold values are selected. To validate the efficacy of proposed noise filtering schemes, an application to image sharpening has been investigated under the noise conditions. It has been observed, if the noisy image passes through the sharpening scheme, the noise gets amplified and as a result the restored results are distorted. However, the prefiltering operations using the proposed schemes enhances the result to a greater extent. Extensive simulations and comparisons are done with competent schemes. It is observed, in general, that the proposed schemes are better in suppressing impulsive noise at different noise ratios than their counterparts

In digital imaging, quality of image degrades due to contamination of various types of noise during the process of acquisition, transmission and storage. Especially impulse noise appears during image acquisition and transmission, which severely degrades the image quality and cause a great loss of information details in an image. Various filtering technique are found in literature for removal of impulse noise. Nonlinear filter such as standard median, weight median filter, center weight median and switching based median filter out perform the linear filters. This thesis investigates the performance analysis of different nonlinear filtering schemes. The performance of these filters can be improved by incorporating the mechanism of noise detection and then applying switching based adaptive filtering approach. Three novel filtering approaches that incorporate the above principles are proposed. It is found that all three approaches give noticeable performance improvement of over many filters reported in literature
