    Turning a Digital Camera into an Absolute 2D Tele-Colorimeter

    We present a simple and effective technique for absolute colorimetric camera characterization, invariant to changes in exposure/aperture and scene irradiance, suitable in a wide range of applications including image-based reflectance measurements, spectral pre-filtering and spectral upsampling for rendering, to improve colour accuracy in high dynamic range imaging. Our method requires a limited number of acquisitions, an off-the-shelf target and a commonly available projector, used as a controllable light source, other than the reflected radiance to be known. The characterized camera can be effectively used as a 2D tele-colorimeter, providing the user with an accurate estimate of the distribution of luminance and chromaticity in a scene, without requiring explicit knowledge of the incident lighting power spectra. We validate the approach by comparing our estimated absolute tristimulus values (XYZ data in cd/m 2 ) with the measurements of a professional 2D tele-colorimeter, for a set of scenes with complex geometry, spatially varying reflectance and light sources with very different spectral power distribution

    Pushing the Limits of 3D Color Printing: Error Diffusion with Translucent Materials

    Accurate color reproduction is important in many applications of 3D printing, from design prototypes to 3D color copies or portraits. Although full color is available via other technologies, multi-jet printers have greater potential for graphical 3D printing, in terms of reproducing complex appearance properties. However, to date these printers cannot produce full color, and doing so poses substantial technical challenges, from the shear amount of data to the translucency of the available color materials. In this paper, we propose an error diffusion halftoning approach to achieve full color with multi-jet printers, which operates on multiple isosurfaces or layers within the object. We propose a novel traversal algorithm for voxel surfaces, which allows the transfer of existing error diffusion algorithms from 2D printing.     Colour remote sensing of the impact of artificial light at night (I): the potential of the International Space Station and other DSLR-based platforms

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Sensors on remote sensing satellites have provided useful tools for evaluation of the environmental impacts of nighttime artificial light pollution. However, due to their panchromatic nature, the data available from these sensors (VI-IRS/DNB and DMSP/OLS) has a limited capacity accurately to assess this impact. Moreover, in some cases, recorded variations can be misleading. Until new satellite platforms and sensors are available, only nighttime images taken with DSLR cameras from the International Space Station (ISS), airplanes, balloons or other such platforms can provide the required information. Here we describe a theoretical approach using colour-colour diagrams to analyse images taken by astronauts on the ISS to estimate spatial and temporal variation in the spectrum of artificial lighting emissions. We then evaluate how this information can be used to determine effects on some key environmental indices: photopic vision, the Melatonin Suppression Index, the Star Light Index, the Induced Photosynthesis Index, production of NO2-NO radicals, energy efficiency and CO2 emissions, and Correlated Colour Temperature.     A Study of Colour Rendering in the In-Camera Imaging Pipeline

    Consumer cameras such as digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) and smartphone cameras have onboard hardware that applies a series of processing steps to transform the initial captured raw sensor image to the final output image that is provided to the user. These processing steps collectively make up the in-camera image processing pipeline. This dissertation aims to study the processing steps related to colour rendering which can be categorized into two stages. The first stage is to convert an image's sensor-specific raw colour space to a device-independent perceptual colour space. The second stage is to further process the image into a display-referred colour space and includes photo-finishing routines to make the image appear visually pleasing to a human. This dissertation makes four contributions towards the study of camera colour rendering. The first contribution is the development of a software-based research platform that closely emulates the in-camera image processing pipeline hardware. This platform allows the examination of the various image states of the captured image as it is processed from the sensor response to the final display output. Our second contribution is to demonstrate the advantage of having access to intermediate image states within the in-camera pipeline that provide more accurate colourimetric consistency among multiple cameras. Our third contribution is to analyze the current colourimetric method used by consumer cameras and to propose a modification that is able to improve its colour accuracy. Our fourth contribution is to describe how to customize a camera imaging pipeline using machine vision cameras to produce high-quality perceptual images for dermatological applications.     Camera based Display Image Quality Assessment

    This thesis presents the outcomes of research carried out by the PhD candidate Ping Zhao during 2012 to 2015 in Gjøvik University College. The underlying research was a part of the HyPerCept project, in the program of Strategic Projects for University Colleges, which was funded by The Research Council of Norway. The research was engaged under the supervision of Professor Jon Yngve Hardeberg and co-supervision of Associate Professor Marius Pedersen, from The Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory, in the Faculty of Computer Science and Media Technology of Gjøvik University College; as well as the co-supervision of Associate Professor Jean-Baptiste Thomas, from The Laboratoire Electronique, Informatique et Image, in the Faculty of Computer Science of Universit´e de Bourgogne. The main goal of this research was to develop a fast and an inexpensive camera based display image quality assessment framework. Due to the limited time frame, we decided to focus only on projection displays with static images displayed on them. However, the proposed methods were not limited to projection displays, and they were expected to work with other types of displays, such as desktop monitors, laptop screens, smart phone screens, etc., with limited modifications. The primary contributions from this research can be summarized as follows: 1. We proposed a camera based display image quality assessment framework, which was originally designed for projection displays but it can be used for other types of displays with limited modifications. 2. We proposed a method to calibrate the camera in order to eliminate unwanted vignetting artifact, which is mainly introduced by the camera lens. 3. We proposed a method to optimize the camera’s exposure with respect to the measured luminance of incident light, so that after the calibration all camera sensors share a common linear response region. 4. We proposed a marker-less and view-independent method to register one captured image with its original at a sub-pixel level, so that we can incorporate existing full reference image quality metrics without modifying them. 5. We identified spatial uniformity, contrast and sharpness as the most important image quality attributes for projection displays, and we used the proposed framework to evaluate the prediction performance of the state-of-the-art image quality metrics regarding these attributes. The proposed image quality assessment framework is the core contribution of this research. Comparing to conventional image quality assessment approaches, which were largely based on the measurements of colorimeter or spectroradiometer, using camera as the acquisition device has the advantages of quickly recording all displayed pixels in one shot, relatively inexpensive to purchase the instrument. Therefore, the consumption of time and resources for image quality assessment can be largely reduced. We proposed a method to calibrate the camera in order to eliminate unwanted vignetting artifact primarily introduced by the camera lens. We used a hazy sky as a closely uniform light source, and the vignetting mask was generated with respect to the median sensor responses over i only a few rotated shots of the same spot on the sky. We also proposed a method to quickly determine whether all camera sensors were sharing a common linear response region. In order to incorporate existing full reference image quality metrics without modifying them, an accurate registration of pairs of pixels between one captured image and its original is required. We proposed a marker-less and view-independent image registration method to solve this problem. The experimental results proved that the proposed method worked well in the viewing conditions with a low ambient light. We further identified spatial uniformity, contrast and sharpness as the most important image quality attributes for projection displays. Subsequently, we used the developed framework to objectively evaluate the prediction performance of the state-of-art image quality metrics regarding these attributes in a robust manner. In this process, the metrics were benchmarked with respect to the correlations between the prediction results and the perceptual ratings collected from subjective experiments. The analysis of the experimental results indicated that our proposed methods were effective and efficient. Subjective experiment is an essential component for image quality assessment; however it can be time and resource consuming, especially in the cases that additional image distortion levels are required to extend the existing subjective experimental results. For this reason, we investigated the possibility of extending subjective experiments with baseline adjustment method, and we found that the method could work well if appropriate strategies were applied.     Meso-scale fluidic devices with chemical sensors for biological applications

    Molecular oxygen and humidity are some of the major environmental quantities being measured for various industrial and commercial applications. This dissertation focuses on the design, fabrication and characterization of optofluidic biosensor systems for oxygen and humidity quantification using color charge-coupled device (CCD) camera as a photodetector and LED panel as an excitation source. Meso-scale fluidic devices with integrated oxygen and humidity sensors for potential applications to hydrotropic and oxytropic studies of small plant roots have been investigated in this study. Meso-scale sensor platform was fabricated using porphyrine complex as the sensitive dye embedded within Ethyl Cellulose (EC) polymer matrix. Green LED light displayed from the light panel helped in exciting the oxygen complex by emitting varied fluorescence emission corresponding to oxygen. This method of optical oxygen imaging helps in wide area distribution over the sensor platform. The root tip response to environmental stimuli by directed growth plays a major role in plant development. With these tropic responses of roots, plants can help themselves during environmental risks such as drought conditions. Different fluidic devices were fabricated with embedded humidity sensors within the device to study the effect of tropic responses. Hydrotropic behavior of corn roots was analyzed along with humidity gradient quantification using color charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for both imaging of the plant root and profiling of humidity distribution.     Evaluation and improvement of the workflow of digital imaging of fine art reproduction in museums

    Fine arts refer to a broad spectrum of art formats, ie~painting, calligraphy, photography, architecture, and so forth. Fine art reproductions are to create surrogates of the original artwork that are able to faithfully deliver the aesthetics and feelings of the original. Traditionally, reproductions of fine art are made in the form of catalogs, postcards or books by museums, libraries, archives, and so on (hereafter called museums for simplicity). With the widespread adoption of digital archiving in museums, more and more artwork is reproduced to be viewed on a display. For example, artwork collections are made available through museum websites and Google Art Project for art lovers to view on their own displays. In the thesis, we study the fine art reproduction of paintings in the form of soft copy viewed on displays by answering four questions: (1) what is the impact of the viewing condition and original on image quality evaluation? (2) can image quality be improved by avoiding visual editing in current workflows of fine art reproduction? (3) can lightweight spectral imaging be used for fine art reproduction? and (4) what is the performance of spectral reproductions compared with reproductions by current workflows? We started with evaluating the perceived image quality of fine art reproduction created by representative museums in the United States under controlled and uncontrolled environments with and without the presence of the original artwork. The experimental results suggest that the image quality is highly correlated with the color accuracy of the reproduction only when the original is present and the reproduction is evaluated on a characterized display. We then examined the workflows to create these reproductions, and found that current workflows rely heavily on visual editing and retouching (global and local color adjustments on the digital reproduction) to improve the color accuracy of the reproduction. Visual editing and retouching can be both time-consuming and subjective in nature (depending on experts\u27 own experience and understanding of the artwork) lowering the efficiency of artwork digitization considerably. We therefore propose to improve the workflow of fine art reproduction by (1) automating the process of visual editing and retouching in current workflows based on RGB acquisition systems and by (2) recovering the spectral reflectance of the painting with off-the-shelf equipment under commonly available lighting conditions.     Engineering of freestanding films

    The PhD work is focuses on the study, characterization and formation of freestanding films. A film is a system in which two dimensions prevail over the third one. In case of freestanding films both surfaces are free; they can be supported by a solid mount of any geometry or float on a liquid, even bubbles are freestanding films. Many innovations were achieved such as a new quantitative, self-reference and full-field thickness map measurement technique. New advances in understanding the phenomenon of leveling of freestanding thin liquid films were also achieved. A totally new device to handle and form freestanding films was designed and build, this new device has a very high number of applications which are not only related directly to freestanding films. This device is capable of overcome many limitations and problems of other devices that forms freestanding films. Moreover, a new protocol for particle deposition on liquid-air (or liquid-liquid) was design. Finally, two novel methods were invented to control the buckling instability of Graphene Sheets particles with many possible applications in stretchable electronics and much more

    Standardized spectral and radiometric calibration of consumer cameras

    Consumer cameras, particularly onboard smartphones and UAVs, are now commonly used as scientific instruments. However, their data processing pipelines are not optimized for quantitative radiometry and their calibration is more complex than that of scientific cameras. The lack of a standardized calibration methodology limits the interoperability between devices and, in the ever-changing market, ultimately the lifespan of projects using them. We present a standardized methodology and database (SPECTACLE) for spectral and radiometric calibrations of consumer cameras, including linearity, bias variations, read-out noise, dark current, ISO speed and gain, flat-field, and RGB spectral response. This includes golden standard ground-truth methods and do-it-yourself methods suitable for non-experts. Applying this methodology to seven popular cameras, we found high linearity in RAW but not JPEG data, inter-pixel gain variations >400% correlated with large-scale bias and read-out noise patterns, non-trivial ISO speed normalization functions, flat-field correction factors varying by up to 2.79 over the field of view, and both similarities and differences in spectral response. Moreover, these results differed wildly between camera models, highlighting the importance of standardization and a centralized database
