    A data-driven discrete elastic rod model for shells and solids

    Les structures en forme de tige sont omniprésentes dans le monde aujourd'hui. Désormais, prédire avec précision leur comportement pour l'ingénierie et les environnements virtuels est indispensable pour de nombreuses industries, notamment l'infographie, l'animation par ordinateur et la conception informatique. Dans ce mémoire, nous explorons un nouveau modèle de calcul pour les tiges élastiques qui exploite les données de simulation pour reproduire les effets de coque et de solide présents dans les tiges qui brisent les hypothèses de la théorie classique de la tige de Kirchhoff, présentant ainsi une voie d'amélioration possible pour de nombreux états de l'art techniques. Notre approche consiste à prendre un ensemble de données de simulations à partir de solides volumétriques ou de coques pour former un nouveau modèle d'énergie définie positive polynomiale d'ordre élevé pour une tige élastique. Cette nouvelle énergie élargit la gamme des comportements des matériaux qui peuvent être modélisés pour la tige, permettant ainsi de capturer une plus large gamme de phénomènes. Afin de proposer et tester ce modèle, nous concevons un pipeline expérimental pour tester les limites de la théorie linéaire des tiges et étudier les géométries d'interface entre les cas coque à tige et volume à coque pour observer les effets d'un modèle de matériau non linéaire et une section transversale non elliptique dans la déformation de la tige. Nous étudions également la relation entre la courbure de la tige et la déformation de la section transversale et la courbure pour introduire une modification sur le terme de flexion de l'énergie. Cela nous permet de reproduire à la fois le comportement de flexion asymétrique présent dans les poutres volumétriques minces et les poutres à coque avec des sections transversales non convexes. Des suggestions pour de nouvelles améliorations des modèles et des techniques expérimentales sont également données.Rod-like structures are ubiquitous in the world today. Henceforth accurately predicting their behavior for engineering and virtual environments are indispensable for many industries including computer graphics, computer animation, and computational design. In this thesis we explore a new computational model for elastic rods that leverages simulation data to reproduce shell and solid-like effects present in rods that break the assumptions of the classical Kirchhoff rod theory, thus presenting a possible improvement avenue to many states-of-the-art techniques. Our approach consists of taking a data set of simulations from both volumetric solids or shells to train a novel high-order polynomial positive-definite energy model for an elastic rod. This new energy increases the range of material behaviors that can be modeled for the rod, thus allowing for a larger range of phenomena to be captured. In order to propose and test this model, we design an experimental pipeline to test the limits of the linear theory of rods and investigate the interface geometries between the Shell-Rod and Volume-Shell cases to observe the effects of a nonlinear material model and a non-elliptical cross-section in the rod deformation. We also investigate the relation between rod curvature and deformation of the cross-section and curvature to introduce a modification on the bending term of the energy. This allows us to reproduce both the asymmetric bending behavior present in thin volumetric solid and shell beams with non-convex cross-sections. Suggestions for further improvements in models and experimental techniques are also given

    Envisioning the qualitative effects of robot manipulation actions using simulation-based projections

    Autonomous robots that are to perform complex everyday tasks such as making pancakes have to understand how the effects of an action depend on the way the action is executed. Within Artificial Intelligence, classical planning reasons about whether actions are executable, but makes the assumption that the actions will succeed (with some probability). In this work, we have designed, implemented, and analyzed a framework that allows us to envision the physical effects of robot manipulation actions. We consider envisioning to be a qualitative reasoning method that reasons about actions and their effects based on simulation-based projections. Thereby it allows a robot to infer what could happen when it performs a task in a certain way. This is achieved by translating a qualitative physics problem into a parameterized simulation problem; performing a detailed physics-based simulation of a robot plan; logging the state evolution into appropriate data structures; and then translating these sub-symbolic data structures into interval-based first-order symbolic, qualitative representations, called timelines. The result of the envisioning is a set of detailed narratives represented by timelines which are then used to infer answers to qualitative reasoning problems. By envisioning the outcome of actions before committing to them, a robot is able to reason about physical phenomena and can therefore prevent itself from ending up in unwanted situations. Using this approach, robots can perform manipulation tasks more efficiently, robustly, and flexibly, and they can even successfully accomplish previously unknown variations of tasks

    Tightly-coupled manipulation pipelines: Combining traditional pipelines and end-to-end learning

    Traditionally, robot manipulation tasks are solved by engineering solutions in a modular fashion --- typically consisting of object detection, pose estimation, grasp planning, motion planning, and finally run a control algorithm to execute the planned motion. This traditional approach to robot manipulation separates the hard problem of manipulation into several self-contained stages, which can be developed independently, and gives interpretable outputs at each stage of the pipeline. However, this approach comes with a plethora of issues, most notably, their generalisability to a broad range of tasks; it is common that as tasks get more difficult, the systems become increasingly complex. To combat the flaws of these systems, recent trends have seen robots visually learning to predict actions and grasp locations directly from sensor input in an end-to-end manner using deep neural networks, without the need to explicitly model the in-between modules. This thesis investigates a sample of methods, which fall somewhere on a spectrum from pipelined to fully end-to-end, which we believe to be more advantageous for developing a general manipulation system; one that could eventually be used in highly dynamic and unpredictable household environments. The investigation starts at the far end of the spectrum, where we explore learning an end-to-end controller in simulation and then transferring to the real world by employing domain randomisation, and finish on the other end, with a new pipeline, where the individual modules bear little resemblance to the "traditional" ones. The thesis concludes with a proposition of a new paradigm: Tightly-coupled Manipulation Pipelines (TMP). Rather than learning all modules implicitly in one large, end-to-end network or conversely, having individual, pre-defined modules that are developed independently, TMPs suggest taking the best of both world by tightly coupling actions to observations, whilst still maintaining structure via an undefined number of learned modules, which do not have to bear any resemblance to the modules seen in "traditional" systems.Open Acces

    This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

    Perception and manipulation for robot-assisted dressing

    Assistive robots have the potential to provide tremendous support for disabled and elderly people in their daily dressing activities. This thesis presents a series of perception and manipulation algorithms for robot-assisted dressing, including: garment perception and grasping prior to robot-assisted dressing, real-time user posture tracking during robot-assisted dressing for (simulated) impaired users with limited upper-body movement capability, and finally a pipeline for robot-assisted dressing for (simulated) paralyzed users who have lost the ability to move their limbs. First, the thesis explores learning suitable grasping points on a garment prior to robot-assisted dressing. Robots should be endowed with the ability to autonomously recognize the garment state, grasp and hand the garment to the user and subsequently complete the dressing process. This is addressed by introducing a supervised deep neural network to locate grasping points. To reduce the amount of real data required, which is costly to collect, the power of simulation is leveraged to produce large amounts of labeled data. Unexpected user movements should be taken into account during dressing when planning robot dressing trajectories. Tracking such user movements with vision sensors is challenging due to severe visual occlusions created by the robot and clothes. A probabilistic real-time tracking method is proposed using Bayesian networks in latent spaces, which fuses multi-modal sensor information. The latent spaces are created before dressing by modeling the user movements, taking the user's movement limitations and preferences into account. The tracking method is then combined with hierarchical multi-task control to minimize the force between the user and the robot. The proposed method enables the Baxter robot to provide personalized dressing assistance for users with (simulated) upper-body impairments. Finally, a pipeline for dressing (simulated) paralyzed patients using a mobile dual-armed robot is presented. The robot grasps a hospital gown naturally hung on a rail, and moves around the bed to finish the upper-body dressing of a hospital training manikin. To further improve simulations for garment grasping, this thesis proposes to update more realistic physical properties values for the simulated garment. This is achieved by measuring physical similarity in the latent space using contrastive loss, which maps physically similar examples to nearby points.Open Acces

    Numerical simulation of fracture pattern development and implications for fuid flow

    Simulations are instrumental to understanding flow through discrete fracture geometric representations that capture the large-scale permeability structure of fractured porous media. The contribution of this thesis is threefold: an efficient finite-element finite-volume discretisation of the advection/diffusion flow equations, a geomechanical fracture propagation algorithm to create fractured rock analogues, and a study of the effect of growth on hydraulic conductivity. We describe an iterative geomechanics-based finite-element model to simulate quasi-static crack propagation in a linear elastic matrix from an initial set of random flaws. The cornerstones are a failure and propagation criterion as well as a geometric kernel for dynamic shape housekeeping and automatic remeshing. Two-dimensional patterns exhibit connectivity, spacing, and density distributions reproducing en echelon crack linkage, tip hooking, and polygonal shrinkage forms. Differential stresses at the boundaries yield fracture curving. A stress field study shows that curvature can be suppressed by layer interaction effects. Our method is appropriate to model layered media where interaction with neighbouring layers does not dominate deformation. Geomechanically generated fracture patterns are the input to single-phase flow simulations through fractures and matrix. Thus, results are applicable to fractured porous media in addition to crystalline rocks. Stress state and deformation history control emergent local fracture apertures. Results depend on the number of initial flaws, their initial random distribution, and the permeability of the matrix. Straightpath fracture pattern simplifications yield a lower effective permeability in comparison to their curved counterparts. Fixed apertures overestimate the conductivity of the rock by up to six orders of magnitude. Local sample percolation effects are representative of the entire model flow behaviour for geomechanical apertures. Effective permeability in fracture dataset subregions are higher than the overall conductivity of the system. The presented methodology captures emerging patterns due to evolving geometric and flow properties essential to the realistic simulation of subsurface processes

    Estimating and understanding motion : from diagnostic to robotic surgery

    Estimating and understanding motion from an image sequence is a central topic in computer vision. The high interest in this topic is because we are living in a world where many events that occur in the environment are dynamic. This makes motion estimation and understanding a natural component and a key factor in a widespread of applications including object recognition , 3D shape reconstruction, autonomous navigation and medica! diagnosis. Particularly, we focus on the medical domain in which understanding the human body for clinical purposes requires retrieving the organs' complex motion patterns, which is in general a hard problem when using only image data. In this thesis, we cope with this problem by posing the question - How to achieve a realistic motion estimation to offer a better clinical understanding? We focus this thesis on answering this question by using a variational formulation as a basis to understand one of the most complex motions in the human's body, the heart motion, through three different applications: (i) cardiac motion estimation for diagnostic, (ii) force estimation and (iii) motion prediction, both for robotic surgery. Firstly, we focus on a central topic in cardiac imaging that is the estimation of the cardiac motion. The main aim is to offer objective and understandable measures to physicians for helping them in the diagnostic of cardiovascular diseases. We employ ultrafast ultrasound data and tools for imaging motion drawn from diverse areas such as low-rank analysis and variational deformation to perform a realistic cardiac motion estimation. The significance is that by taking low-rank data with carefully chosen penalization, synergies in this complex variational problem can be created. We demonstrate how our proposed solution deals with complex deformations through careful numerical experiments using realistic and simulated data. We then move from diagnostic to robotic surgeries where surgeons perform delicate procedures remotely through robotic manipulators without directly interacting with the patients. As a result, they lack force feedback, which is an important primary sense for increasing surgeon-patient transparency and avoiding injuries and high mental workload. To solve this problem, we follow the conservation principies of continuum mechanics in which it is clear that the change in shape of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied. Thus, we create a variational framework to acquire the deformation that the tissues undergo due to an applied force. Then, this information is used in a learning system to find the nonlinear relationship between the given data and the applied force. We carried out experiments with in-vivo and ex-vivo data and combined statistical, graphical and perceptual analyses to demonstrate the strength of our solution. Finally, we explore robotic cardiac surgery, which allows carrying out complex procedures including Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (OPCABG). This procedure avoids the associated complications of using Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) since the heart is not arrested while performing the surgery on a beating heart. Thus, surgeons have to deal with a dynamic target that compromisetheir dexterity and the surgery's precision. To compensate the heart motion, we propase a solution composed of three elements: an energy function to estimate the 3D heart motion, a specular highlight detection strategy and a prediction approach for increasing the robustness of the solution. We conduct evaluation of our solution using phantom and realistic datasets. We conclude the thesis by reporting our findings on these three applications and highlight the dependency between motion estimation and motion understanding at any dynamic event, particularly in clinical scenarios.L’estimació i comprensió del moviment dins d’una seqüència d’imatges és un tema central en la visió per ordinador, el que genera un gran interès perquè vivim en un entorn ple d’esdeveniments dinàmics. Per aquest motiu és considerat com un component natural i factor clau dins d’un ampli ventall d’aplicacions, el qual inclou el reconeixement d’objectes, la reconstrucció de formes tridimensionals, la navegació autònoma i el diagnòstic de malalties. En particular, ens situem en l’àmbit mèdic en el qual la comprensió del cos humà, amb finalitats clíniques, requereix l’obtenció de patrons complexos de moviment dels òrgans. Aquesta és, en general, una tasca difícil quan s’utilitzen només dades de tipus visual. En aquesta tesi afrontem el problema plantejant-nos la pregunta - Com es pot aconseguir una estimació realista del moviment amb l’objectiu d’oferir una millor comprensió clínica? La tesi se centra en la resposta mitjançant l’ús d’una formulació variacional com a base per entendre un dels moviments més complexos del cos humà, el del cor, a través de tres aplicacions: (i) estimació del moviment cardíac per al diagnòstic, (ii) estimació de forces i (iii) predicció del moviment, orientant-se les dues últimes en cirurgia robòtica. En primer lloc, ens centrem en un tema principal en la imatge cardíaca, que és l’estimació del moviment cardíac. L’objectiu principal és oferir als metges mesures objectives i comprensibles per ajudar-los en el diagnòstic de les malalties cardiovasculars. Fem servir dades d’ultrasons ultraràpids i eines per al moviment d’imatges procedents de diverses àrees, com ara l’anàlisi de baix rang i la deformació variacional, per fer una estimació realista del moviment cardíac. La importància rau en que, en prendre les dades de baix rang amb una penalització acurada, es poden crear sinergies en aquest problema variacional complex. Mitjançant acurats experiments numèrics, amb dades realístiques i simulades, hem demostrat com les nostres propostes solucionen deformacions complexes. Després passem del diagnòstic a la cirurgia robòtica, on els cirurgians realitzen procediments delicats remotament, a través de manipuladors robòtics, sense interactuar directament amb els pacients. Com a conseqüència, no tenen la percepció de la força com a resposta, que és un sentit primari important per augmentar la transparència entre el cirurgià i el pacient, per evitar lesions i per reduir la càrrega de treball mental. Resolem aquest problema seguint els principis de conservació de la mecànica del medi continu, en els quals està clar que el canvi en la forma d’un objecte elàstic és directament proporcional a la força aplicada. Per això hem creat un marc variacional que adquireix la deformació que pateixen els teixits per l’aplicació d’una força. Aquesta informació s’utilitza en un sistema d’aprenentatge, per trobar la relació no lineal entre les dades donades i la força aplicada. Hem dut a terme experiments amb dades in-vivo i ex-vivo i hem combinat l’anàlisi estadístic, gràfic i de percepció que demostren la robustesa de la nostra solució. Finalment, explorem la cirurgia cardíaca robòtica, la qual cosa permet realitzar procediments complexos, incloent la cirurgia coronària sense bomba (off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting o OPCAB). Aquest procediment evita les complicacions associades a l’ús de circulació extracorpòria (Cardiopulmonary Bypass o CPB), ja que el cor no s’atura mentre es realitza la cirurgia. Això comporta que els cirurgians han de tractar amb un objectiu dinàmic que compromet la seva destresa i la precisió de la cirurgia. Per compensar el moviment del cor, proposem una solució composta de tres elements: un funcional d’energia per estimar el moviment tridimensional del cor, una estratègia de detecció de les reflexions especulars i una aproximació basada en mètodes de predicció, per tal d’augmentar la robustesa de la solució. L’avaluació de la nostra solució s’ha dut a terme mitjançant conjunts de dades sintètiques i realistes. La tesi conclou informant dels nostres resultats en aquestes tres aplicacions i posant de relleu la dependència entre l’estimació i la comprensió del moviment en qualsevol esdeveniment dinàmic, especialment en escenaris clínics.Postprint (published version

    Opinions and Outlooks on Morphological Computation

    Morphological Computation is based on the observation that biological systems seem to carry out relevant computations with their morphology (physical body) in order to successfully interact with their environments. This can be observed in a whole range of systems and at many different scales. It has been studied in animals – e.g., while running, the functionality of coping with impact and slight unevenness in the ground is "delivered" by the shape of the legs and the damped elasticity of the muscle-tendon system – and plants, but it has also been observed at the cellular and even at the molecular level – as seen, for example, in spontaneous self-assembly. The concept of morphological computation has served as an inspirational resource to build bio-inspired robots, design novel approaches for support systems in health care, implement computation with natural systems, but also in art and architecture. As a consequence, the field is highly interdisciplinary, which is also nicely reflected in the wide range of authors that are featured in this e-book.
