    Metaheuristic Design Patterns: New Perspectives for Larger-Scale Search Architectures

    Design patterns capture the essentials of recurring best practice in an abstract form. Their merits are well established in domains as diverse as architecture and software development. They offer significant benefits, not least a common conceptual vocabulary for designers, enabling greater communication of high-level concerns and increased software reuse. Inspired by the success of software design patterns, this chapter seeks to promote the merits of a pattern-based method to the development of metaheuristic search software components. To achieve this, a catalog of patterns is presented, organized into the families of structural, behavioral, methodological and component-based patterns. As an alternative to the increasing specialization associated with individual metaheuristic search components, the authors encourage computer scientists to embrace the ‘cross cutting' benefits of a pattern-based perspective to optimization algorithms. Some ways in which the patterns might form the basis of further larger-scale metaheuristic component design automation are also discussed

    Hybrid metaheuristics for solving multi-depot pickup and delivery problems

    In today's logistics businesses, increasing petrol prices, fierce competition, dynamic business environments and volume volatility put pressure on logistics service providers (LSPs) or third party logistics providers (3PLs) to be efficient, differentiated, adaptive, and horizontally collaborative in order to survive and remain competitive. In this climate, efficient computerised-decision support tools play an essential role. Especially, for freight transportation, e efficiently solving a Pickup and Delivery Problem (PDP) and its variants by an optimisation engine is the core capability required in making operational planning and decisions. For PDPs, it is required to determine minimum-cost routes to serve a number of requests, each associated with paired pickup and delivery points. A robust solution method for solving PDPs is crucial to the success of implementing decision support tools, which are integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Fleet Telematics so that the flexibility, agility, visibility and transparency are fulfilled. If these tools are effectively implemented, competitive advantage can be gained in the area of cost leadership and service differentiation. In this research, variants of PDPs, which multiple depots or providers are considered, are investigated. These are so called Multi-depot Pickup and Delivery Problems (MDPDPs). To increase geographical coverage, continue growth and encourage horizontal collaboration, efficiently solving the MDPDPs is vital to operational planning and its total costs. This research deals with designing optimisation algorithms for solving a variety of real-world applications. Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulations of the MDPDPs are presented. Due to being NP-hard, the computational time for solving by exact methods becomes prohibitive. Several metaheuristics and hybrid metaheuristics are investigated in this thesis.     A public transport bus assignment problem: parallel metaheuristics assessment

    Combinatorial Optimization Problems occur in a wide variety of contexts and generally are NP-hard problems. At a corporate level solving this problems is of great importance since they contribute to the optimization of operational costs. In this thesis we propose to solve the Public Transport Bus Assignment problem considering an heterogeneous fleet and line exchanges, a variant of the Multi-Depot Vehicle Scheduling Problem in which additional constraints are enforced to model a real life scenario. The number of constraints involved and the large number of variables makes impracticable solving to optimality using complete search techniques. Therefore, we explore metaheuristics, that sacrifice optimality to produce solutions in feasible time. More concretely, we focus on the development of algorithms based on a sophisticated metaheuristic, Ant-Colony Optimization (ACO), which is based on a stochastic learning mechanism. For complex problems with a considerable number of constraints, sophisticated metaheuristics may fail to produce quality solutions in a reasonable amount of time. Thus, we developed parallel shared-memory (SM) synchronous ACO algorithms, however, synchronism originates the straggler problem. Therefore, we proposed three SM asynchronous algorithms that break the original algorithm semantics and differ on the degree of concurrency allowed while manipulating the learned information. Our results show that our sequential ACO algorithms produced better solutions than a Restarts metaheuristic, the ACO algorithms were able to learn and better solutions were achieved by increasing the amount of cooperation (number of search agents). Regarding parallel algorithms, our asynchronous ACO algorithms outperformed synchronous ones in terms of speedup and solution quality, achieving speedups of 17.6x. The cooperation scheme imposed by asynchronism also achieved a better learning rate than the original one

    Automatic Algorithm Design for Hybrid Flowshop Scheduling Problems

    [EN] Industrial production scheduling problems are challenges that researchers have been trying to solve for decades. Many practical scheduling problems such as the hybrid flowshop are ATP-hard. As a result, researchers resort to metaheuristics to obtain effective and efficient solutions. The traditional design process of metaheuristics is mainly manual, often metaphor-based, biased by previous experience and prone to producing overly tailored methods that only work well on the tested problems and objectives. In this paper, we use an Automatic Algorithm Design (AAD) methodology to eliminate these limitations. AAD is capable of composing algorithms from components with minimal human intervention. We test the proposed MD for three different optimization objectives in the hybrid flowshop.     Automatically exploiting high-level problem structure in local-search

    Constraint Programming is the study of modelling and solving complex combinatorial problems. Systematic-search and local-search are both well-researched approaches to solving constraint problems. Systematic-search exhaustively explores the entire search space and can be used to guarantee optimality, prove infeasibility or enumerate all possible solutions. Conversely, local-search is a heuristic-based approach to solving constraint problems. Often used in industrial applications, local-search is used to discover high-quality solutions quickly, usually sacrificing the ability to cover the entire search space. For this reason, it is preferred in applications where the scale of the problems being solved are beyond what can be feasibly searched using systematic methods. This work investigates methods of using information derived from high-level specifications of problems to augment the performance and scalability of local-search systems. Typically, abstract high-level constraint specifications or models are refined into lowlevel representations suitable for input to a constraint solver, erasing any knowledge of the specifications' high-level structures. We propose that whilst these lower-level models are equivalent in their description of the problems being solved, the original high-level specification, if retained, can be used to augment both the performance and scalability of local-search systems. In doing this, two approaches have been implemented and benchmarked. In the first approach, Structured Neighbourhood Search (SNS), a systematic solver is adapted to support declarative large neighbourhood search, using the high-level types such as sets, sequences and partitions in the original problem specification to automatically construct higher-quality, structured neighbourhoods. Our experiments demonstrate the performance of SNS when applied to structured problems. In the second approach, a novel constraint-based local-search solver is designed to operate on the high-level structures without refining these structures into lower-level representations. The new solver Athanor can directly instantiate and operate on the types in the Essence abstract specification language, supporting arbitrarily nested types such as sets of partitions, multi-sets of sequences and so on. Athanor retains the performance of SNS but boasts a unique benefit; on some classes of problems, the high-level solver is shown to be able to efficiently operate on instances that are too large for low-level solvers to even begin search

    The symposium presented issues involved in the development of scheduling systems that can deal with resource and time limitations. To qualify, a system must be implemented and tested to some degree on non-trivial problems (ideally, on real-world problems). However, a system need not be fully deployed to qualify. Systems that schedule actions in terms of metric time constraints typically represent and reason about an external numeric clock or calendar and can be contrasted with those systems that represent time purely symbolically. The following topics are discussed: integrating planning and scheduling; integrating symbolic goals and numerical utilities; managing uncertainty; incremental rescheduling; managing limited computation time; anytime scheduling and planning algorithms, systems; dependency analysis and schedule reuse; management of schedule and plan execution; and incorporation of discrete event techniques

    Computational Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field that aims to develop computational and mathematical models and methods for decision making concerning the management and allocation of resources in order to help solve environmental problems. This thesis deals with a broad spectrum of such problems (energy efficiency, water management, limiting greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption) giving a contribution towards their solution by means of Logic Programming (LP) and Constraint Programming (CP), declarative paradigms from Artificial Intelligence of proven solidity. The problems described in this thesis were proposed by experts of the respective domains and tested on the real data instances they provided. The results are encouraging and show the aptness of the chosen methodologies and approaches. The overall aim of this work is twofold: both to address real world problems in order to achieve practical results and to get, from the application of LP and CP technologies to complex scenarios, feedback and directions useful for their improvement

    Learning to Generate 3D Training Data

    Human-level visual 3D perception ability has long been pursued by researchers in computer vision, computer graphics, and robotics. Recent years have seen an emerging line of works using synthetic images to train deep networks for single image 3D perception. Synthetic images rendered by graphics engines are a promising source for training deep neural networks because it comes with perfect 3D ground truth for free. However, the 3D shapes and scenes to be rendered are largely made manual. Besides, it is challenging to ensure that synthetic images collected this way can help train a deep network to perform well on real images. This is because graphics generation pipelines require numerous design decisions such as the selection of 3D shapes and the placement of the camera. In this dissertation, we propose automatic generation pipelines of synthetic data that aim to improve the task performance of a trained network. We explore both supervised and unsupervised directions for automatic optimization of 3D decisions. For supervised learning, we demonstrate how to optimize 3D parameters such that a trained network can generalize well to real images. We first show that we can construct a pure synthetic 3D shape to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a shape-from-shading benchmark. We further parameterize the decisions as a vector and propose a hybrid gradient approach to efficiently optimize the vector towards usefulness. Our hybrid gradient is able to outperform classic black-box approaches on a wide selection of 3D perception tasks. For unsupervised learning, we propose a novelty metric for 3D parameter evolution based on deep autoregressive models. We show that without any extrinsic motivation, the novelty computed from autoregressive models alone is helpful. Our novelty metric can consistently encourage a random synthetic generator to produce more useful training data for downstream 3D perception tasks.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
