User Experience Enhancement on Smartphones using Wireless Communication Technologies

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) have been equipped with smartphones. In
addition, in many cases, users use a smartphone while on the move, so if a wireless
communication technologies and various sensors are used for a mobile user, a better
user experience can be provided. For example, when a user moves while using Wi-Fi,
the user experience can be improved by providing a seamless Wi-Fi service. In addition,
it is possible to provide a special service such as indoor positioning or navigation
by estimating the users mobility in an indoor environment, and additional services
such as location-based advertising and payment systems can also be provided. Therefore,
improving the user experience by using wireless communication technology and
smartphones sensors is considered to be an important research field in the future.
In this dissertation, we propose three systems that can improve the user experience
or convenience by usingWi-Fi, BLE, and smartphones sensors: (i) BLEND: BLE
beacon-aided fast Wi-Fi handoff for smartphones, (ii) PYLON: Smartphone based Indoor
Path Estimation and Localization without Human Intervention, (iii) FINISH:
Fully-automated Indoor Navigation using Smartphones with Zero Human Assistance.
First, we propose fast handoff scheme called BLEND exploiting BLE as secondary
radio. We conduct detailed analysis of the sticky client problem on commercial smartphones
with experiment and close examination of Android source code. We propose
BLEND, which exploits BLE modules to provide smartphones with prior knowledge
of the presence and information of APs operating at 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi channels.
BLEND operating with only application requires no hardware and Android source code
modification of smartphones.We prototype BLEND with commercial smartphones and
evaluate the performance in real environment. Our measurement results demonstrate
that BLEND significantly improves throughput and video bitrate by up to 61% and
111%, compared to a commercial Android application, respectively, with negligible
energy overhead.
Second, we design a path estimation and localization system, termed PYLON,
which is plug-and-play on Android smartphones. PYLON includes a novel landmark
correction scheme that leverages real doors of indoor environments consisting of floor
plan mapping, door passing time detection and correction. It operates without any user
intervention. PYLON relaxes some requirements for localization systems. It does not
require any modifications to hardware or software of smartphones, and the initial location
of WiFi APs, BLE beacons, and users. We implement PYLON on five Android
smartphones and evaluate it on two office buildings with the help of three participants
to prove applicability and scalability. PYLON achieves very high floor plan mapping
accuracy with a low localization error.
Finally, We design a fully-automated navigation system, termed FINISH, which
addresses the problems of existing previous indoor navigation systems. FINISH generates
the radio map of an indoor building based on the localization system to determine
the initial location of the user. FINISH relaxes some requirements for current
indoor navigation systems. It does not require any human assistance to provide navigation
instructions. In addition, it is plug-and-play on Android smartphones. We implement
FINISH on five Android smartphones and evaluate it on five floors of an office
building with the help of multiple users to prove applicability and scalability. FINISH
determines the location of the user with extremely high accuracy with in one step.
In summary, we propose systems that enhance the users convenience and experience
by utilizing wireless infrastructures such as Wi-Fi and BLE and various smartphones
sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer equipped in smartphones.
Systems are implemented on commercial smartphones to verify the performance
through experiments. As a result, systems show the excellent performance that

System Architecture for Low-Power Ubiquitously Connected Remote Health Monitoring Applications With Smart Transmission Mechanism
We present a novel smart transmission technique with seamless handoff mechanism to achieve ubiquitous connectivity using multiple on-chip radios targeting remote health monitoring applications. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, a system architecture for low-power ubiquitously connected multiparametric remote health monitoring system is proposed in this paper. The architecture proposed uses a generic adaptive rule engine for classifying the collected multiparametric data from patient and smartly transmit the data when only needed. The on-chip seamless handoff mechanism proposed aids for the ubiquitous connectivity with a very good energy savings by intelligent controlling of the multiple on-chip radios. The performance analysis of the proposed on-chip seamless handoff mechanism along with adaptive rule engine-based smart transmission mechanism achieves on an average of 50.39% of energy saving and 51.01% reduction in duty cycle of transmitter taken over 20 users compared with the continuous transmission. From the hardware complexity analysis made on the proposed seamless handoff controller and adaptive rule engine concludes that they require only 2082 CMOS transistors for real-time implementation
Bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications at vehicular speeds using Nakagami-m fading model
The wireless communication industry has experienced a rapid technological evolution from its basic first generation (1G) wireless systems to the latest fourth generation (4G) wireless broadband systems. Wireless broadband systems are becoming increasingly popular with consumers and the technological strength of 4G has played a major role behind the success of wireless broadband systems. The IEEE 802.16m standard of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) has been accepted as a 4G standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2011. The IEEE 802.16m is fully optimised for wireless communications in fixed environments and can deliver very high throughput and excellent quality of service. In mobile communication environments however, WiMAX consumers experience a graceful degradation of service as a direct function of vehicular speeds. At high vehicular speeds, the throughput drops in WiMAX systems and unless proactive measures such as forward error control and packet size optimisation are adopted and properly adjusted, many applications cannot be facilitated at high vehicular speeds in WiMAX communications. For any proactive measure, bit error rate estimation as a function of vehicular speed, serves as a useful tool. In this thesis, we present an analytical model for bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications using the Nakagami-m fading model. We also show, through an analysis of the data collected from a practical WiMAX system, that the Nakagami-m model can be made adaptive as a function of speed, to represent fading in fixed environments as well as mobile environments
Context Awareness for Navigation Applications
This thesis examines the topic of context awareness for navigation applications and asks the question, “What are the benefits and constraints of introducing context awareness in navigation?” Context awareness can be defined as a computer’s ability to understand the situation or context in which it is operating. In particular, we are interested in how context awareness can be used to understand the navigation needs of people using mobile computers, such as smartphones, but context awareness can also benefit other types of navigation users, such as maritime navigators. There are countless other potential applications of context awareness, but this thesis focuses on applications related to navigation. For example, if a smartphone-based navigation system can understand when a user is walking, driving a car, or riding a train, then it can adapt its navigation algorithms to improve positioning performance.
We argue that the primary set of tools available for generating context awareness is
machine learning. Machine learning is, in fact, a collection of many different algorithms and techniques for developing “computer systems that automatically improve their performance through experience” [1]. This thesis examines systematically the ability of existing algorithms from machine learning to endow computing systems with context awareness. Specifically, we apply machine learning techniques to tackle three different tasks related to context awareness and having applications in the field of navigation:
(1) to recognize the activity of a smartphone user in an indoor office environment,
(2) to recognize the mode of motion that a smartphone user is undergoing outdoors, and
(3) to determine the optimal path of a ship traveling through ice-covered waters. The
diversity of these tasks was chosen intentionally to demonstrate the breadth of problems encompassed by the topic of context awareness.
During the course of studying context awareness, we adopted two conceptual “frameworks,” which we find useful for the purpose of solidifying the abstract concepts of context and context awareness. The first such framework is based strongly on the writings of a rhetorician from Hellenistic Greece, Hermagoras of Temnos, who defined seven elements of “circumstance”. We adopt these seven elements to describe contextual information. The second framework, which we dub the “context pyramid” describes the processing of raw sensor data into contextual information in terms of six different levels. At the top of the pyramid is “rich context”, where the information is expressed in prose, and the goal for the computer is to mimic the way that a human would describe a situation.
We are still a long way off from computers being able to match a human’s ability to
understand and describe context, but this thesis improves the state-of-the-art in context awareness for navigation applications. For some particular tasks, machine learning has succeeded in outperforming humans, and in the future there are likely to be tasks in navigation where computers outperform humans. One example might be the route optimization task described above. This is an example of a task where many different types of information must be fused in non-obvious ways, and it may be that computer algorithms can find better routes through ice-covered waters than even well-trained human navigators. This thesis provides only preliminary evidence of this possibility, and future work is needed to further develop the techniques outlined here.
