Measurement and analysis of PMU reporting latency for smart grid protection and control applications

Emerging power system protection and control applications require faster-responding measurements and more accurate knowledge of the actual latency of the measurement and communications systems. A new method for accurately determining the reporting latency of a phasor measurement unit (PMU) has been developed and demonstrated. This method operates in real-time, works passively for any existing PMU without requiring changes to the PMU hardware or software, and it is very accurate - providing a measurement uncertainty of ¡500 ns in many cases, significantly surpassing the 0.002 s accuracy requirement in the most recent IEEE Synchrophasor standard. Only low-cost hardware and open source software are required. It is particularly important to understand end-to-end system latency, including the impact of local and wide-area communications, rather than just the latency of the PMU device; the proposed method also supports such practical measurements. It is therefore shown how this advance can be used to enable efficient, but realistic, cross-domain power system simulation studies, which incorporate measurement and communications delays. These capabilities address complexity and uncertainty in the design and operation of future PMU-based protection and control functions for new smart grid services

The long-term technological evolutions occurred into state-of-the-art satellite systems altogether with the addition of new high throughput geostatic and non-geostatic systems, individual satellites can now achieve a peak bandwidth of up to Gbps, and with possible extension into satellite constellation systems the total capacity can reach up to Tbps. Supplementary, with systems latency being comparable to terrestrial infrastructures and with integration of several computer science technologies, satellite systems can achieve new & more advanced roles inside a heterogeneous 5G network’s ecosystem. In this thesis, we have studied European Space Agency (ESA’s) and European Union’s (EU) Horizon 2020 Research and Development (R&D) funded projects in order to describe the satellite capabilities within a 5G heterogeneous network, mentioning the impact of the evolution of digital satellite communications and furthermore the integration with the state-of the art & future terrain telecommunication systems by new technologies occurred through the evolution of electronic & free space optical communications alongside with the integration of computer science’s technologies like Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). In order to describe this evolution we have studied the concepts of each individual project, categorized chronically and individual by its scientific field of research. Our main scientific trends for this thesis are: -Satellite Integration studies & strategies into the 5G terrestrial networks -Integration of SDN and NFV technologies on 5G satellite component -Satellite’s role in the Internet of Things applications over 5G terrestrial networks -Satellite’s role in Content Distribution Networks & internet protocols impact over user’s Quality of Experience (QoE) over a satellite link -The future proposals upon the evolution of Satellite systems by upcoming improvements and corresponding standards Finally, we have created an Annex for technical details upon the evolution of physical layer of the satellite systems with the corresponding bibliography of this thesis for future study

Deploying Software-Defined Networks: a Telco Perspective

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) proposes a new network architecture in which the control plane and forwarding plane are decoupled. SDN can improve network efficiency and ease of management through the centralization of the control and policy decisions. However, SDN deployments are currently limited to data-center and experimental environments. This thesis surveys the deployment of SDN from the perspective of a telecommunication network operator. We discuss the strategies which enable the operator to migrate to a network in which both SDN and legacy devices interoperate. As a synthesis of existing technologies and protocols, we formulate an automated process for the bootstrapping of newly deployed forwarding devices. Furthermore, we review solutions for programming the forwarding devices and for performing topology discovery. The functional correctness of the proposed bootstrapping process is evaluated in an emulated environment

Tiedonsiirtoverkkojen rakenne elää muutoksen aikaa. Perinteisesti data-, puhelin- ja laajakaistaliikenne on siirretty erillisissä verkoissa, joiden samanaikainen ylläpitäminen tuottaa ylimääräisiä kustannuksia operaattoreille. Lisäksi uudet interaktiiviset palvelut vaativat toimiakseen sellaista palvelunlaatua, jota nykyiset tiedonsiirtoverkot eivät kykene tarjoamaan. Näiden epäkohtien johdosta tiedonsiirtoverkkojen kehityksessä tähdätään uusiin, entistä joustavampiin ja eri toiminnot yhdistäviin verkkoratkaisuihin, joissa tiedonsiirron palvelunlaadulla on entistä suurempi merkitys.

This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

This thesis addresses the problem of optimizing network resource usage, for the delivery of Group Services, in Next Generation Networks featuring broadcast technologies. In this scope, proposals are made according to the expected evolution of 3G networks into Next Generation Heterogeneous Networks that include broadcast technologies such as DVB. Group Communication resource optimization is considered a vertical challenge that must cross several layers. The optimizations here proposed cover both Application to Service Platform interfaces for group communication services, and Core Network to Radio Access Network interface abstractions and mappings. The proposed optimizations are also presented taking into consideration network evolution path towards an All-IP based Next Generation Network. First it is addressed the Application to Service Platform optimization, which can already be deployed over 3G networks. This optimization could potentiate the development of new and innovative applications that through the use of broadcast/multicast service delivery mechanisms could be more efficient network wise. Next proposals are made on the Core Network to Radio Access Network interfaces that address the heterogeneity of future networks and consider the need to support broadcast networks. It is also considered the possibility to increase the Quality of Service of broadcast/multicast services based on the dynamic mapping of IP multicast into unicast radio bearers. In order to validate these optimizations, several prototypes were built based on an advanced access router for next generation networks. Such access router functionalities and software architecture are also presented here
