    Tensions of secularization in Jose Ingenieros’s travel chronicles

    En 1905, José Ingenieros viajó a Europa como representante argentino para participar en el V Congreso Internacional de Psicología, en Roma. Aprovechando la ocasión, el diario La Nación le encargó la redacción de una serie de "correspondencias", que fueron publicadas en sus páginas y que posteriormente se compilaron en diversos libros. Nos interesa relevar en los escritos de este cronista algunos que hacen referencia a uno de los aspectos medulares de la cultura moderna europea y que, en su rol de "viajero estudioso" (para usar su propia expresión), observa en relación con los países que visita: el proceso social y cultural de la secularización. Este eje nos permitirá efectuar un recorrido por cuestiones como la relación entre secularización y vida urbana, así como el rol mediador entre el intelectual devenido en corresponsal y el público al cual estaban dirigidas sus crónicas.In 1905, José Ingenieros travelled to Europe. He was the Argentinian delegate to the V Psychology International Congress that took place in Rome. The newspaper La Nación asked him to write a series of "correspondencias". They were published in that paper and, afterward, they were edited in different books. Our aim in this article is to analyze some chronicles written by Ingenieros, specially those related to the European modern culture and the secularization social and cultural process. Ingenieros talked about himself as a "viajero estudioso" and he observed carefully that phenomenon in different countries. This axis will allow us to go through some interesting topics, for example, the relationship between secularization and urban life, or the mediator role adopted by this intellectual turned into a correspondent as regards his public.Fil: Fernandez, Cristina Beatriz.     El presente artículo es una aproximación a las crónicas de viajes –género privilegiado en la época modernista– de Aurora Cáceres haciendo especial hincapié en su visión del Cuzco, ya que es ahí donde reside –a nuestro juicio– la mejor aportación de la escritora a las letras hispanoamericanas. Debido a que Zoila Aurora Cáceres (Lima, 1877-Madrid, 1958) es una autora bastante desconocida, este trabajo se propone asimismo ofrecer una visión de conjunto de su figura pública y de su obra literaria.The present work studies the travel chronicles –a favoured gender in the modernist period– of Aurora Cáceres emphasizing his sight of Cuzco, since it is here where resides –in our opinion– her best contribution to the hispanoamerican letters. Because Zoila Aurora Cáceres (Lima,1877-Madrid, 1958) is an author rather unknown, this article also proposes to offer an overall view of her public figure and literary work

    Este artigo analisa a posição do intelectual Mário de Andrade ao se referir à obra O turista aprendiz, no que concerne à sua representação etnográfica e fotográfica, numa tentativa de compreender os problemas sociais, durante sua estada nos estados do Norte e do Nordeste brasileiro. A obra O turista aprendiz foi escrita entre os anos de 1928 e 1930, em forma de diários, de anotações e crônicas de viagens. Em um primeiro momento, o escritor paulista publicou originalmente esses escritos no jornal Diário Nacional, nas mesmas datas. No entanto, a publicação oficial do livro saiu após os textos serem publicados no jornal, em edição organizada por Telê Ancona Lopez, quase cinquenta anos depois, em 1976. O centro das visitas etnográficas embutido na obra consiste na atenção que o autor dedica ao público proletário, na busca pela formulação de uma cultura popular nacional. O escritor modernista assume uma postura de intelectual comprometido com a sociedade, pretendendo representá-la em seus escritos e crônicas de viagens. Como lastro teórico, baseamo-nos na interpretação de alguns teóricos que mais ajudaram a compreender o panorama dessa dualidade investigativa (Literatura e Fotografia), a saber: Ancona Lopez (1976); Sussekind (2008); Barthes (1981), entre outros, necessários para contemplação do tema proposto.This paper analyzes the position of the intellectual Mário de Andrade when referring to his book O turista aprendiz, with respect to its ethnographic and photographic representation in an attempt to understand the social problems during their stay in the Brazilian states of North and Northeast. The work O turista aprendiz was written between the years 1928 and 1930 in the form of diaries, notes and travel chronicles. At first, the São Paulo writer originally published these writings in the newspaper Diário Nacional, on the same dates. However, the official publication of the book came out after the texts were published in the paper edition organized by Tele Ancona Lopez, nearly fifty years later, in 1976. The bulge of ethnographic visits embedded in the work is the attention that the author dedicated to the public proletarian, in the search for the formulation of a national popular culture. The modernist writer assumes an intellectual posture committed to society, claiming to represent it in his writings and travel chronicles. As a theoretical ballast, we rely on the interpretation of some theorists who most helped understand the landscape of this investigative duality (Literature and Photography), namely: Lopez (1976); Sussekind (2008); Barthes (1981), among others, required for the contemplation of the proposed subject.     Novel Translations

    Many early novels were cosmopolitan books, read from London to Leipzig and beyond, available in nearly simultaneous translations into French, English, German, and other European languages. In Novel Translations, Bethany Wiggin charts just one of the paths by which newness—in its avatars as fashion, novelties, and the novel—entered the European world in the decades around 1700. As readers across Europe snapped up novels, they domesticated the genre. Across borders, the novel lent readers everywhere a suggestion of sophistication, a familiarity with circumstances beyond their local ken. Into the eighteenth century, the modern German novel was not German at all; rather, it was French, as suggested by Germans' usage of the French word Roman to describe a wide variety of genres: pastoral romances, war and travel chronicles, heroic narratives, and courtly fictions. Carried in large part on the coattails of the Huguenot diaspora, these romans, nouvelles, amours secrets, histoires galantes, and histories scandaleuses shaped German literary culture to a previously unrecognized extent. Wiggin contends that this French chapter in the German novel's history began to draw to a close only in the 1720s, more than sixty years after the word first migrated into German.     Exploring Male and Female Voices through Epistemic Modality and Evidentiality in Some Modern English Travel Texts on the Canaries

    This article describes authorial voice through evidential and epistemic sentential devices in a corpus of 19th and early 20th century travel texts. The corpus contains four works written by female travellers and the other four by men. Therefore, apart from providing a catalogue of the strategies deployed by the authors in order to mark modality and evidentiality, we also report on expected differences in their frequencies of use in relation to the writer’s gender. In addition, the interest of this study lies in the fact that, to the best of our knowledge, no research on writer stance has previously been carried out in texts belonging to the genre of travel writing

    This essay analyses the intertextual relationship between Ossertões and the travel chronicle written by the naturalistic travelers thatexplored the Brazilian countryside during the 19th century. Some similaritieshave been identified, such as the “otherness” of the individualtraversing the back-country, the signs along the way, the traveler’s observationson his obstacles, the perception of the melancholic back-countrylandscape, and, mainly, the scientific look, that enables us to approach theEuclides’ narrative to those chronicles. The quotations from several naturalistictravelers proves that Euclides new these narratives. Thus, the presenceof the features which are specific of travel chronicles in Os sertõesevidences the relationship mentioned above and the importance of an analysisin the perspective of travels chronicles

    Cruces entre el Periodismo y la Literatura. Análisis de un caso: las crónicas de viaje de Juan Pablo Meneses

    El Periodismo y la Literatura, como dispositivos escriturales, tienen en común su carácter narrativo, esto es: la narración como modo de contar, como modo de hacer pasar a la linealidad del texto historias que son cronológicas en su «orden natural», pero que poseen también múltiples perspectivas posibles y complejos entramados de hechos y discursos. Como campos autónomos ostentan rasgos que los alejan y funcionan como límites separatistas. Sin embargo hay también características cercanas entre ambos que se revelan en aquellas manifestaciones experimentales nimos como «cruces» entre periodismo y literatura, y que pueden reconocerse, por ejemplo, en el caso de las crónicas de viaje escritas por Juan Pablo Meneses. Con vistas a ese reconocimiento, el presente artículo propone un análisis de dos de sus textos a partir de categorías acuñadas, por un lado, por la teoría literaria y, por otro, por la redacción periodísticaJournalism and Literature, as written devices, has in common their narrative nature, which is: the narration as a mode of telling, as a mode to convert chronological stories with their several perspectives and complex network of actions and speeches into text line. As autonomous fields, they hold characteristics that distance them and work as separatist limits. However, there are also closer characteristics between them that are revealed in experimental manifestations that we define as «crosses» between journalism and literature. Such characteristics can be recognized in travel chronicles written by Juan Pablo Meneses. Trying such recognition, the present article proposes an analysis of two of his texts based on concepts created by literature theory and journalism writing
