Casimir effect in the nonequilibrium steady-state of a quantum spin chain
We present a fully microscopics-based calculation of the Casimir effect in a
nonequilibrium system, namely an energy flux driven quantum XX chain. The force
between the walls (transverse-field impurities) is calculated in a
nonequilibrium steady state which is prepared by letting the system evolve from
an initial state with the two halves of the chain prepared at equilibrium at
different temperatures. The steady state emerging in the large-time limit is
homogeneous but carries an energy flux. The Casimir force in this
nonequilibrium state is calculated analytically in the limit when the
transverse fields are small. We find that the the Casimir force range is
reduced compared to the equilibrium case, and suggest that the reason for this
is the reduction of fluctuations in the flux carrying steady state.Comment: 11 page
Microscopic and Macroscopic Signatures of Antiferromagnetic Domain Walls
Magnetotransport measurements on small single crystals of Cr, the elemental
antiferromagnet, reveal the hysteretic thermodynamics of the domain structure.
The temperature dependence of the transport coefficients is directly correlated
with the real-space evolution of the domain configuration as recorded by x-ray
microprobe imaging, revealing the effect of antiferromagnetic domain walls on
electron transport. A single antiferromagnetic domain wall interface resistance
is deduced to be of order at a

Crossover of interface growth dynamics during corrosion and passivation
We study a model of corrosion and passivation of a metalic surface in contact
with a solution using scaling arguments and simulation. The passive layer is
porous so that the metal surface is in contact with the solution. The volume
excess of the products may suppress the access of the solution to the metal
surface, but it is then restored by a diffusion mechanism. A metalic site in
contact with the solution or with the porous layer can be passivated with rate
p and volume excess diffuses with rate D. At small times, the corrosion front
linearly grows in time, but the growth velocity shows a t^{-1/2} decrease after
a crossover time of order t_c ~ D/p^2, where the average front height is of
order h_c ~ D/p. A universal scaling relation between h/h_c and t/t_c is
proposed and confirmed by simulation for 0.00005 <= p <= 0.5 in square
lattices. The roughness of the corrosion front shows a crossover from
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling to Laplacian growth (diffusion-limited erosion -
DLE) at t_c. The amplitudes of roughness scaling are obtained by the same kind
of arguments as previously applied to other competitive growth models. The
simulation results confirm their validity. Since the proposed model captures
the essential ingredients of different corrosion processes, we also expect

Time-resolved spectral correlations of long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts
For a sample of long GRBs with known redshift, we study the distribution of
the evolutionary tracks on the rest-frame luminosity-peak energy Liso-Ep'
diagram. We are interested in exploring the extension of the `Yonetoku'
correlation to any phase of the prompt light curve, and in verifying how the
high-signal prompt duration time, Tf, in the rest frame correlates with the
residuals of such correlation (Firmani et al. 2006). For our purpose, we
analyse separately two samples of time-resolved spectra corresponding to 32
GRBs with peak fluxes >1.8 phot cm^-2 s^-1 from the Swift-BAT detector, and 7
bright GRBs from the CGRO-BATSE detector previously processed by Kaneko et al.
(2006). After constructing the Liso-Ep' diagram, we discuss the relevance of
selection effects, finding that they could affect significantly the
correlation. However, we find that these effects are much less significant in
the Liso x Tf-Ep' diagram, where the intrinsic scatter reduces significantly.
We apply further corrections for reducing the intrinsic scatter even more. For
the sub-samples of GRBs (7 from Swift and 5 from CGRO) with measured jet break
time, we analyse the effects of correcting Liso by jet collimation. We find
that (i) the scatter around the correlation is reduced, and (ii) this scatter
is dominated by the internal scatter of the individual evolutionary tracks.
These results suggest that the time, integrated `Amati' and `Ghirlanda'
correlations are consequences of the time resolved features, not of selection
effects, and therefore call for a physical origin. We finally remark the

El propósito de este artículo fue determinar las medidas a adoptar para prevenir, diagnosticar y tratar la tríada de la mujer deportista. Métodos: Se comparan los reportes de numerosos estudios realizados acerca de las causas, diagnóstico y tratamiento de esta entidad, con experiencia acumulada en la atención a deportistas de alto rendimiento por especialistas que laboran en este campo. Resultados: Se hizo énfasis en los factores predisponentes y desencadenantes de la aparición de la tríada y se proponen medidas preventivas y curativas de intervención. Conclusiones: Se propone una estrategia encaminada a evitar la aparición de este síndrome
A method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies
Early pregnancy loss occurs in 6–10% of equine pregnancies making it the main cause of reproductive wastage. Despite this, reasons for the losses are known in only 16% of cases. Lack of viable conceptus material has inhibited investigations of many potential genetic and pathological causes. We present a method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies. Trophoblast cells from 18/30 (60%) failed equine pregnancies of gestational ages 14–65 days were successfully cultured in three different media, with the greatest growth achieved for cells cultured in AmnioChrome™ Plus. Genomic DNA of a suitable quality for molecular assays was also isolated from 29/30 of these cases. This method will enable future investigations determining pathologies causing EPL
Factor analysis of the long gamma-ray bursts
We study statistically 197 long gamma-ray bursts, detected and measured in
detail by the BATSE instrument of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. In the
sample 10 variables, describing for any burst the time behavior of the spectra
and other quantities, are collected. The factor analysis method is used to find
the latent random variables describing the temporal and spectral properties of
GRBs. The application of this particular method to this sample indicates that
five factors and the \REpk spectral variable (the ratio of peak energies in
the spectrum) describe the sample satisfactorily. Both the pseudo-redshifts
inferred from the variability, and the Amati-relation in its original form, are

Altered CD161bright CD8+ Mucosal Associated Invariant T (MAIT)-Like Cell Dynamics and Increased Differentiation States among Juvenile Type 1 Diabetics.
Type 1A diabetes (T1D) is believed to be caused by immune-mediated destruction of β-cells, but the immunological basis for T1D remains controversial. Microbial diversity promotes the maturation and activation of certain immune subsets, including CD161bright CD8+ mucosal associated invariant T (MAIT) cells, and alterations in gut mucosal responses have been reported in type 1 diabetics (T1Ds). We analyzed T cell populations in peripheral blood leukocytes from juvenile T1Ds and healthy controls. We found that proportion and absolute number of MAIT cells were similar between T1Ds and controls. Furthermore, while MAIT cell proportions increased with age among healthy controls, this trend was not observed among long-standing T1Ds. Additionally, the CD27- MAIT cell subset is significantly increased in T1Ds and positively correlated with HbA1c levels. However, after T1Ds are stratified by age, the younger group has significantly increased proportions of CD27- MAIT cells compared to age-matched controls, and this proportional increase appears to be independent of HbA1c levels. Finally, we analyzed function of the CD27- MAIT cells and observed that IL-17A production is increased in CD27- compared to CD27+ MAIT cells. Overall, our data reveal disparate MAIT cell dynamics between T1Ds and controls, as well as signs of increased MAIT cell activation in T1Ds. These changes may be linked to hyperglycemia and increased mucosal challenge among T1Ds

Fabrication and characterisation of Si micropillar PV structures
Arrays of vertical silicon micropillar radial junction solar cells have been fabricated by diffusion of direct application spin on dopant and from the vapour phase through proximity rapid thermal diffusion. The micropillars were fabricated by optical lithography and deep reactive ion etching. The micropillar arrays show superior antireflective properties over the measured spectrum and good correlation to finite difference time domain modelling of identical geometry arrays. Junctions formed by a conventional spin on doping process of phosphorus containing dopant solution produced Suns-Voc values in the region of 0·3 V. This value is likely due to difficulties encountered in achieving an even distribution of dopant over the entire surface of the arrays. An alternative method utilising spin on dopant but employing an intermediate vapour phase diffusion step produced promising results with Suns-Voc values reaching 0·5 V following a post-diffusion drive-in ste
