Electronic structure and stability of simple and complex phases in transition metals
Electronic factors that explain the relative stability of simple and complex phases in transition metals are examined within a realistic tight-binding model. A repulsive pairwise interaction of the Born-Mayer type is added to the band energy term. The parameters of this short-ranged repulsive term are determined by fitting the total energy to elastic properties of the bcc-based metal. The model is further simplified by introducing the Linear Green Function Method. The study focuses on the properties of molybdenum, correctly predicting bcc as the stable phase
The Elliptic Billiard: Subtleties of Separability
Some of the subtleties of the integrability of the elliptic quantum billiard
are discussed. A well known classical constant of the motion has in the quantum
case an ill-defined commutator with the Hamiltonian. It is shown how this
problem can be solved. A geometric picture is given revealing why levels of a
separable system cross. It is shown that the repulsions found by Ayant and
Arvieu are computational effects and that the method used by Traiber et al. is
related to the present picture which explains the crossings they find. An
asymptotic formula for the energy-levels is derived and it is found that the
statistical quantities of the spectrum P(s) and \Delta(L) have the form
expected for an integrable system.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, 3 Figures (postscript). Submitted to European

Elliptic Quantum Billiard
The exact and semiclassical quantum mechanics of the elliptic billiard is
investigated. The classical system is integrable and exhibits a separatrix,
dividing the phasespace into regions of oscillatory and rotational motion. The
classical separability carries over to quantum mechanics, and the Schr\"odinger
equation is shown to be equivalent to the spheroidal wave equation. The quantum
eigenvalues show a clear pattern when transformed into the classical action
space. The implication of the separatrix on the wave functions is illustrated.
A uniform WKB quantization taking into account complex orbits is shown to be
adequate for the semiclassical quantization in the presence of a separatrix.
The pattern of states in classical action space is nicely explained by this
quantization procedure. We extract an effective Maslov phase varying smoothly
on the energy surface, which is used to modify the Berry-Tabor trace formula,
resulting in a summation over non-periodic orbits. This modified trace formula
produces the correct number of states, even close to the separatrix. The
Fourier transform of the density of states is explained in terms of classical
orbits, and the amplitude and form of the different kinds of peaks is
analytically calculated.Comment: 33 pages, Latex2e, 19 figures,macros: epsfig, amssymb, amstext,

Electronic structure and phase equilibria in ternary substitutional alloys
A reliable, consistent scheme to study phase equilibria in ternary substitutional alloys based on the tight-binding approximation is presented. With electronic parameters from linear muffin-tin orbital calculations, the computed density of states and band structures compare well with those from more accurate {ital ab}{ital initio} calculations. Disordered alloys are studied within the tight-binding coherent-potential approximation extended to alloys; energetics of ordered systems are obtained through effective pair interactions computed with the general perturbation method; and partially ordered alloys are studied with a novel simplification of the molecular coherent-potential approximation combined with the general perturbation method. The formalism is applied to bcc-based Zr-Ru-Pd alloys which are promising candidates for medical implant devices. Using energetics obtained from the above scheme, we apply the cluster- variation method to study phase equilibria for particular pseudo- binary alloys and show that results are consistent with observed behavior of electronic specific heat coefficient with composition for Zr{sub 0.5}(Ru, Pd){sub 0.5}
Yellow fever in the diagnostics laboratory
Yellow fever (YF) remains a public health issue in endemic areas despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine. In 2015-2016, urban outbreaks of YF were declared in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and a sylvatic outbreak has been ongoing in Brazil since December 2016. Of great concern is the risk of urban transmission cycles taking hold in Brazil and the possible spread to countries with susceptible populations and competent vectors. Vaccination remains the cornerstone of an outbreak response, but a low vaccine stockpile has forced a sparing-dose strategy, which has thus far been implemented in affected African countries and now in Brazil. Accurate laboratory confirmation of cases is critical for efficient outbreak control. A dearth of validated commercial assays for YF, however, and the shortcomings of serological methods make it challenging to implement YF diagnostics outside of reference laboratories. We examine the advantages and drawbacks of existing assays to identify the barriers to timely and efficient laboratory diagnosis. We stress the need to develop new diagnostic tools to meet current challenges in the fight against YF
The aim of this article is to analyze the relationship between perfectionism and academic performance of university graduate students in the City of Buenos Aires. 465 university undergraduates participated in this study: Psychology students (52.2%), Engineering students (26.2%) and Medicine students (21.6%). The resulting scores used to set the different perfectionism profiles (adaptative perfectionists- AP, maladaptive perfectionists- MP, and non perfectionists- NP), are similar to those expected according to current theory and to our previous studies. Regarding the relationship between the different student profiles and their academic performance, it was found that students with an AP profile have a significantly higher average grades than those in the other two groups, and less pending exams. No significant differences were found in average grades between MP and NP. For the remaining variables, no significant differences were found between the different profiles of perfectionism. Implications of these findings for future research in the area are discussed.O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar a relação entre os perfis de perfeccionismo e o desempenho acadêmico em uma mostra de estudantes universitários da cidade de Buenos Aires. Broncoespasmo induzido pelo exercício na infância
We review the concept, pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, pulmonary function tests, and treatment of exercise-induced bronchospasm in children. Exercise-induced bronchospasm is the acute narrowing of the airway that is triggered by vigorous physical activity in individuals with airway hyperreactivity. It is characterized by several degrees of obstruction occurring some minutes after the end of exercise. A late responsemay also occur, usually in children. Exercise-induced bronchospasm in children affects up to 15% of general population, and it is more prevalent in asthmatics. Diagnosis is suggested by typical history, and confirmed by specific tests. The clinical presentation is variable. Its diagnosis is confirmed by a recorded fall in the peak expiratory flow (PEF) or forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1 ) of 15% or higher after exercise, or by a decrease in the forced expiratory flow at 25-75% (FEF25-75) of 20% in relation to baseline measurements. Many theories try to explain the pathophysiology of this condition. Beta-2 agonists are the most common drugs used in the treatment of exerciseinduced bronchospasm and in prophylaxis. Mast cell stabilizing agents and leukotriene antagonists can also be used. Exercise-induced bronchospasm should be remembered in asthmatic patients that present symptoms on exercising. Although there is a large amount of informationavailable about therapeutic options, there is still much to be explored in this field of studyNeste trabalho, são revisados conceitos atuais sobre definição, fisiopatologia, diagnóstico clínico e funcional pulmonar e tratamento do broncoespasmo induzidopelo exercício em crianças. A apresentação clínica é variável.
