Blastic Natural Killer-Cell Lymphoma Presenting in the Skin
AbstractBlastic natural killer (NK)-cell lymphoma is a clinically aggressive hemato-logic neoplasm with a high incidence of cutaneous involvement. We report a 19-year-old man who presented with asymptomatic, erythematous, infiltrated bean plaques and nodules of various sizes, scattered over the face, trunk and extremities. A skin biopsy specimen revealed diffuse dermal infiltration of medium-sized pleomorphic cells with a blastic appearance. Immunohistochemical studies showed that the tumor cells were positive for CD56, CD43, CD123, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl trans-ferase (TdT). The neoplastic cells were negative for B-cell, T-cell, and myeloid cell markers. In situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus encoded RNA (EBER) gave a negative result. Flow cytometric analysis of bone marrow aspirate demonstrated a CD56 positive population of blastic cells. A diagnosis of blastic NK-cell lymphoma was made and the skin lesions regressed after treatment with L-asparaginase-based chemotherapy (L-asparaginase, cyclophosphamide, etoposide). The skin lesions regressed after two sessions of chemotherapy

Babirusa (Babyrousa babyrussa) on Buru island
The first description of Babirusa on the [Indonesian] island of Buru may be found in a letter written
in 1584 by Fr. Bernardino Ferrari describing the wildlife on Buru. In his own words:
âĂ lâisola del Burro molto fertile de victovaglie di queste parti, habundante de molti animali
sylvestri, come de porci et altri animali di queste parti. Fra quali vi sono uni semeglianti al porco
ma bianchi. E li due denti grandi, con i quali i porci combetteno, questi animali le tengono diretti di
modo che furan oil musso del detto animali, e uscindo sopra appariscono come due chiodi
grandi.â
[amongst which [animals] there are some resembling pigs, but white. The two tusks which pigs
use to fight with, these animals have straight, in such a way as to pierce the snout of the said
animal, sticking out on top like two great nails] (Jacobs 1980)
Studi Awal Karakteristik Pohon Sarang Dan Sarang Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus : Linnaeus 1760)
Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus constitutes one of Borneo orangutan subspecies. Orangutans are arboreal animals that utilitize twigs and branches to build a nest. Scientific informations related to subspecies P. p. pygmaeus are considered remarkably rare. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of P. p. pygmaeus nesting tree and nest. This study was conducted from April to July 2013, at Peninjau Hill, Kapuas Hulu. Data collection method used in this study was line transect method. The parameters observed were the height of nesting tree, nest height, nest position, nest class and the type of nesting tree. The nesting tree height of P. p. pygmaeus in Peninjau Hill ranged from 5 m to 39 m with the nest hight ranged from     3 m â 37 m. Generally, the position of nest is at position 2 with nest class mostly in class 4. The nest height significantly corresponds to tree height. Nesting trees consist of 42 trees genera dominated by Santiria. Trees of Dipterocarpaceae family dominate as the nesting tree of orangutan in Peninjau Hill. As much as 46,53% of nesting tree of P. p. pygmaeus also serves as feeding tree
Charge Storage Effect in a Trilayer Structure Comprising Germanium Nanocrystals
A metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) device with a trilayer insulator structure consisting of sputtered SiO₂ (~50nm)/evaporated pure germanium (Ge) layer (2.4nm)/rapid thermal oxide (~5nm) was fabricated on a p-type Si substrate. The MIS device was rapid thermal annealed at 1000°C. Capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements showed that, after rapid thermal annealing at 1000°C for 300s in Ar, the trilayer device exhibited charge storage property. The charge storage effect was not observed in a device with a bilayer structure without the Ge middle layer. With increasing rapid thermal annealing time from 0 to 400s, the width of the C-V hysteresis of the trilayer device increased significantly from 1.5V to ~11V, indicating that the charge storage capability was enhanced with increasing annealing time. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy results confirmed that with increasing annealing time, the 2.4nm amorphous middle Ge layer crystallized gradually. More Ge nanocrystals were formed and the crystallinity of the Ge layer improved as the annealing time was increased. When the measurement temperature was increased from â50°C to 150°C, the width of the hysteresis of the MIS device reduced from ~10V to ~6V. This means that the charge storage capability of the trilayer structure decreases with increasing measurement temperature. This is due to the fact that the leakage current in the trilayer structure increases with increasing measurement temperature.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Tumor-Associated Macrophage-Induced Invasion and Angiogenesis of Human Basal Cell Carcinoma Cells by Cyclooxygenase-2 Induction
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are associated with invasion, angiogenesis, and poor prognosis in many human cancers. However, the role of TAMs in human basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains elusive. We found that the number of TAMs infiltrating the tumor is correlated with the depth of invasion, microvessel density, and COX-2 expression in human BCC cells. TAMs also aggregate near COX-2 expressing BCC tumor nests. We hypothesize that TAMs might activate COX-2 in BCC cells and subsequently increase their invasion and angiogenesis. TAMs are a kind of M2 macrophage derived from macrophages exposed to Th2 cytokines. M2-polarized macrophages derived from peripheral blood monocytes were cocultured with BCC cells without direct contact. Coculture with the M2 macrophages induced COX-2-dependent invasion and angiogenesis of BCC cells. Human THP-1 cell line cells, after treated with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), differentiated to macrophages with M2 functional profiles. Coculture with PMA-treated THP-1 macrophages induced COX-2-dependent release of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and subsequent increased invasion of BCC cells. Macrophages also induced COX-2-dependent secretion of basic fibroblast growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor-A, and increased angiogenesis in BCC cells
High precision pressure sensors based on SAW devices in the GHz range
In this paper, an AlN/free-standing nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) system is proposed in order to process high frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators for sensing applications. The main problem of synthetic diamond is its high surface roughness that worsens the sputtered AlN quality and hence the device response. In order to study the feasibility of this structure, AlN films from 150 nm up to 1200 nm thick have been deposited on free-standing NCD. We have then analysed the influence of the AlN layer thickness on its crystal quality and device response. Optimized thin films of 300 nm have been used to fabricate of one-port SAW resonators operating in the 10â14 GHz frequency range. A SAW based sensor pressure with a sensibility of 0.33 MHz/bar has been fabricated
Macrophage polarisation affects their regulation of trophoblast behaviour
Introduction
During the first trimester of human pregnancy, fetally-derived extravillous trophoblast (EVT) cells invade into uterine decidua and remodel the uterine spiral arteries to ensure that sufficient blood reaches the maternal-fetal interface. Decidual macrophages have been implicated in the regulation of decidual remodelling and aberrant activation of these immune cells is associated with pre-eclampsia.
Methods
The monocytic cell line THP-1 was activated to induce an M1 or M2 phenotype and the conditioned media was used to treat the EVT cell line SGHPL-4 in order to determine the effect of macrophage polarisation on trophoblast behaviour in-vitro. SGHPL-4 cell functions were assessed using time-lapse microscopy, endothelial-like tube formation assays and western blot.
Results
The polarisation state of the THP-1 cells was found to differentially alter the behaviour of trophoblast cells in-vitro with pro-inflammatory M1 conditioned media significantly inhibiting trophoblast motility, impeding trophoblast tube formation, and inducing trophoblast expression of caspase 3, when compared to anti-inflammatory M2 conditioned media.
Discussion
Macrophages can regulate trophoblast functions that are critical during decidual remodelling in early pregnancy. Importantly, there is differential regulation of trophoblast function in response to the polarisation state of these cells. Our studies indicate that the balance between a pro- and anti-inflammatory environment is important in regulating the cellular interactions at the maternal-fetal interface and that disturbances in this balance likely contribute to pregnancy disorders associated with poor trophoblast invasion and vessel remodelling
