ANALYSIS OF THE U.S. COMMODITY LOAN PROGRAM WITH MARKETING LOAN PROVISIONS
Over the next several years, crop prices are projected to be below to slightly above commodity loan rates. As a result, marketing loan benefits to farmers, in the form of loan deficiency payments and marketing loan gains from the commodity loan program, are likely to continue to be sizeable. The level of realized per-unit revenues facilitated by marketing loans exceeds commodity loan rates, thereby raising expected net returns to farmers. Model simulations show that the loan program can raise total acreage planted to major field crops, generally increasing levels of domestic use and exports while lowering crop prices. Cross-commodity effects of supply response to relative returns (including marketing loan benefits), however, result in acreage shifts among competing crops, which can lead to reductions in plantings of some crops in some years. Most impacts occur in the years when there are marketing loan benefits, with little effect in subsequent years when prices rise high enough to eliminate marketing loan benefits. Protostellar collapse and fragmentation using an MHD GADGET
Although the influence of magnetic fields is regarded as vital in the star
formation process, only a few magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations have been
performed on this subject within the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)
method. This is largely due to the unsatisfactory treatment of non-vanishing
divergence of the magnetic field. Recently smoothed particle
magnetohydrodynamics (SPMHD) simulations based on Euler potentials have proven
to be successful in treating MHD collapse and fragmentation problems, however
these methods are known to have some intrinsical difficulties. We have
performed SPMHD simulations based on a traditional approach evolving the
magnetic field itself using the induction equation. To account for the
numerical divergence, we have chosen an approach that subtracts the effects of
numerical divergence from the force equation, and additionally we employ
artificial magnetic dissipation as a regularization scheme. We apply this
realization of SPMHD to a widely known setup, a variation of the 'Boss &
Bodenheimer standard isothermal test case', to study the impact of the magnetic
fields on collapse and fragmentation. In our simulations, we concentrate on
setups, where the initial magnetic field is parallel to the rotation axis. We
examine different field strengths and compare our results to other findings
reported in the literature. We are able to confirm specific results found
elsewhere, namely the delayed onset of star formation for strong fields,
accompanied by the tendency to form only single stars. We also find that the
'magnetic cushioning effect', where the magnetic field is wound up to form a
'cushion' between the binary, aids binary fragmentation in a case, where

Facts from Faeces: Prey Remains in Wolf, Canis lupus, Faeces Revise Occurrence Records for Mammals of British Columbia's Coastal Archipelago
Archipelagos often harbour taxa that are endemic and vulnerable to disturbance. Conservation planning and research for these areas depend fundamentally on accurate and current taxonomic inventories. Although basic ecological information is in its infancy, the temperate rainforest islands of coastal British Columbia are undergoing rapid human-caused modification, particularly logging. We report herein new mammal records for these islands as determined by prey remains in the faeces of Wolves (Canis lupus), the area’s apex mammalian terrestrial predator. Of particular interest is our detection of Marten (Martes americana) on islands previously inventoried and island occupancy by Moose (Alces alces), which have apparently migrated recently to coastal British Columbia. Remains in faeces provided valuable new species occurrence information, but more extensive and focused inventories are required to generate predictions of island occupancy by mammals based on biotic and abiotic landscape features

Undiagnosed dementia in primary care: A record linkage study
BackgroundThe number of people living with dementia is greater than the number with a diagnosis of dementia recorded in primary care. This suggests that a significant number are living with dementia that is undiagnosed. Little is known about this group and there is little quantitative evidence regarding the consequences of diagnosis for people with dementia.ObjectivesThe aims of this study were to (1) describe the population meeting the criteria for dementia but without diagnosis, (2) identify predictors of being diagnosed and (3) estimate the effect of diagnosis on mortality, move to residential care, social participation and well-being.DesignA record linkage study of a subsample of participants (n = 598) from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study II (CFAS II) (n = 7796), an existing cohort study of the population of England aged ≥ 65 years, with standardised validated assessment of dementia and consent to access medical records.Data sourcesData on dementia diagnoses from each participant’s primary care record and covariate and outcome data from CFAS II.SettingA population-representative cohort of people aged ≥ 65 years from three regions of England between 2008 and 2011.ParticipantsA total of 598 CFAS II participants, which included all those with dementia who consented to medical record linkage (n = 449) and a stratified sample without dementia (n = 149).Main outcome measuresThe main outcome was presence of a diagnosis of dementia in each participant’s primary care record at the time of their CFAS II assessment(s). Other outcomes were date of death, cognitive performance scores, move to residential care, hospital stays and social participation.ResultsAmong people with dementia, the proportion with a diagnosis in primary care was 34% in 2008–11 and 44% in 2011–13. Implementing Pharmacy Informatics in College Curricula: The AACP Technology in Pharmacy Education and Learning Special Interest Group
Many professional organizations have initiatives to increase the awareness and use of informatics in the practice of pharmacy. Within education we must respond to these initiatives and make technology integral to all aspects of the curriculum, inculcating in students the importance of technology in practice. This document proposes 5 central domains for organizing planning related to informatics and technology within pharmacy education. The document is intended to encourage discussion of informatics within pharmacy education and the implications of informatics in future pharmacy practice, and to guide colleges of pharmacy in identifying and analyzing informatics topics to be taught and methods of instruction to be used within the doctor of pharmacy curriculum
Multiplex giant magnetoresistive biosensor microarrays identify interferon-associated autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus.
High titer, class-switched autoantibodies are a hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Dysregulation of the interferon (IFN) pathway is observed in individuals with active SLE, although the association of specific autoantibodies with chemokine score, a combined measurement of three IFN-regulated chemokines, is not known. To identify autoantibodies associated with chemokine score, we developed giant magnetoresistive (GMR) biosensor microarrays, which allow the parallel measurement of multiple serum antibodies to autoantigens and peptides. We used the microarrays to analyze serum samples from SLE patients and found individuals with high chemokine scores had significantly greater reactivity to 13 autoantigens than individuals with low chemokine scores. Our findings demonstrate that multiple autoantibodies, including antibodies to U1-70K and modified histone H2B tails, are associated with IFN dysregulation in SLE. Further, they show the microarrays are capable of identifying autoantibodies associated with relevant clinical manifestations of SLE, with potential for use as biomarkers in clinical practice
Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 drives a switch in connexin mediated cell-to-cell communication in tubular cells of the diabetic kidney
Aims/Hypothesis: Changes in cell-to-cell communication have been linked to several secondary complications of diabetes, but the mechanism by which connexins affect disease progression in the kidney is poorly understood. This study examines a role for glucose-evoked changes in the beta1 isoform of transforming growth factor (TGFβ1), on connexin expression, gap-junction mediated intercellular communication (GJIC) and hemi-channel ATP release from tubular epithelial cells of the proximal renal nephron.
Methods: Biopsy material from patients with and without diabetic nephropathy was stained for connexin-26 (CX26) and connexin-43 (CX43). Changes in expression were corroborated by immunoblot analysis in human primary proximal tubule epithelial cells (hPTECs) and model epithelial cells from human renal proximal tubules (HK2) cultured in either low glucose (5mmol/L) ± TGFβ1 (2-10ng/ml) or high glucose (25mmol/L) for 48h or 7days. Secretion of the cytokine was determined by ELISA. Paired whole cell patch clamp recordings were used to measure junctional conductance in control versus TGFβ1 treated (10ng/ml) HK2 cells, with carboxyfluorescein uptake and ATP-biosensing assessing hemi-channel function. A downstream role for ATP in mediating the effects of TGF-1 on connexin mediated cell communication was assessed by incubating cells with ATPS (1-100M) or TGF-1 +/- apyrase (5 Units/ml). Implications of ATP release were measured through immunoblot analysis of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and fibronectin expression.
Results: Biopsy material from patients with diabetic nephropathy exhibited increased tubular expression of CX26 and CX43 (P<0.01, n=10), data corroborated in HK2 and hPTEC cells cultured in TGFβ1 (10ng/ml) for 7days (P<0.001, n=3). High glucose significantly increased TGFβ1 secretion from tubular epithelial cells (P<0.001, n=3). The cytokine (10ng/ml) reduced junctional conductance between HK2 cells from 4.5±1.3nS in control to 1.15±0.9nS following 48h TGFβ1 and to 0.42±0.2nS after 7days TGFβ1 incubation (P<0.05, n=5). Acute (48h) and chronic (7day) challenge with TGFβ1 produced a carbenoxolone (200M)-sensitive increase in carboxyfluorescein loading, matched by an increase in ATP release from 0.29±0.06μM in control to 1.99±0.47μM after 48hr incubation with TGFβ1 (10ng/ml; P<0.05, n=3). TGF-1 (2-10ng/ml) and ATPs (1-100M) increased expression of IL-6 (P<0.001 n=3) and fibronectin (P<0.01 n=3). The effect of TGF-1 on IL-6 and fibronectin expression was partially blunted when preincubated with apyrase (n=3).
Conclusion: These data suggest that chronic exposure to glucose-evoked TGFβ1 induce an increase in CX26 and CX43 expression, consistent with changes observed in tubular epithelia from patients with diabetic nephropathy. Despite increased connexin expression, direct GJIC communication decreases, whilst hemichannel expression/function and paracrine release of ATP increases, changes that trigger increased levels of expression of interleukin 6 and fibronectin. Linked to inflammation and fibrosis, local increases in purinergic signals may exacerbate disease progression and highlight connexin mediated cell communication as a future therapeutic target for diabetic nephropath
