From the Other Side of the Gun to the Other Side of the Camera : Adapting Despentes' Baise-moi for Cinema

"C'est moins spectacle qu'au cinéma" (72) says Manu in Baise-moi (1993), after her first murder. While this comparison between reality and cinema underlines the lack of effect reality has, compared to the power of images, such a desire for cinematographic effects also represents the protagonists' will to not merely be the agents of their lives but the directors of their cinematography. However, despite the attempt to achieve afilmic aesthetic, the unusual violent and sexual acts performed lack the desired spectacularity. In this article, I argue that the characters' will to direct images and the frustration deriving from the lack of cinematography runs parallel with Virginie Despentes'decision to adapt her novel into a film. Despentes' style, albeit aggressive, does not match the violence of the actions committed by her characters. In mobilizing Robert Stam's concept of adaptation, I show how, in focusing on the performance of the violent and pornographic reality imagined by the protagonists, the adaptation represents the cinematic actualization of the protagonists' actions in the novel. Theirposition on the right side of the gun to shoot at all opponents corresponds to Despentes and Trinh Thi's decision to place themselves on the right side of the camera to challenge a bourgeois voyeuristic audience

Influence of the radial spacing between cathodes on the surface composition of iron samples sintered by hollow cathode electric discharge

The present work reports an investigation of the influence of the radial spacing between cathodes on the iron sintering process by hollow cathode electrical discharge, with surface enrichment of the alloying elements Cr and Ni. Pressed cylindrical samples of 9.5 mm diameter and density of 7.0 ± 0.1 g/cm³ were prepared by compaction of Ancorsteel 1000C iron powder. These samples, constituting the central cathode, were positioned concentrically in the interior of an external cathode machined from a tube of stainless steel AISI 310 (containing: 25% Cr, 16% Ni, 1.5% Mn, 1.5% Si, 0.03% C and the remainder Fe). Sintering was done at 1150 °C, for 120 min, utilizing radial spacings between the central and hollow cathodes of 3, 6 and 9 mm and a gas mixture of 80% Ar and 20% H2, with a flow rate of 5 cm³/s at a pressure of 3 Torr. The electric discharge was generated using a pulsed voltage power source, with a period of 200 mus. The radial spacing had only a slight influence on the quantity of atoms of alloying elements deposited and diffused on the surface of the sample. Analysis with a microprobe showed the presence of chrome (up to 4.0%) and nickel (up to 3.0%, in at. %) at the surface of the samples. This surface enrichment can be attributed to the mechanism of sputtering of the metallic atoms present in the external cathode, with the deposition of these elements on the sample surface and consequent diffusion within the sample.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of Mechanical EngineeringUniversidade Federal de Santa Catarina Department of Mechanical EngineeringUNIFESP, Department of Mechanical EngineeringSciEL

Le Chemin de la Civilisation (réflexions autour de la perception des Indiens du Brésil par les voyageurs français (1843-1906))

    Get PDF
This new, global perspective underlay the European projects of expansion and integration. The arrival of French explorers and travelers in Brazil in the second half of the 19th century was shaped by this movement , that shaped the very concept of civilization. This concept was rooted in a specific report to time and space, and the Brazilian elites, intent on being considered part of the civilized world, bought into it. To this way of civilization responded the way advocated by French travelers for the transformation of the Indians and the Brazilian wilderness. Their encounters with the Other, while varied, were always interpreted in the prevailing terms of human progress. Describing the Indians, the French were adding to the understanding of the diversity of human societies, even while they sought at the same time to reduce it. The travelers made observations about the natives and their lands, and they considered how they might be refashioned and made more useful to humanity. The supposed universality of this model of civilization echoes the universal scale on which its vision of the world was based. Taking another look at the way of civilization can let space for others conceptions of the world, based on different perceptions of reality. It makes wonder about those values of western civilization of the 19th century and their present outcomes. The look at Indians is not the same today than in the past, but, it's possible to detect in it the trace of a similar inherited structureNANTERRE-PARIS10-Bib. élec. (920509901) / SudocSudocFranceF

A range of 2-substituted perhydrofuro[2,3-b]furans have been synthesized in a stereoselective manner through a sequence involving the Lewis-acid catalyzed carbonyl-ene reaction of a protected isopentenyl alcohol with a variety of enophiles, deprotection of the corresponding monoprotected diols, and palladium-catalyzed intramolecular acetalization under Wacker-type reaction conditions. This work was generously supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), grant number CTQ2007-65218 and Consolider Ingenio 2010, grant number CSD2007-00006, the Generalitat Valenciana (GV; PROMETEO/2009/039), and Fondos Europeos para el Desarrollo Regional (FEDER).
