Economic analysis of acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has become a viable option for migraine prophylaxis in Europe; however, despite its wide use, more data on the short- and long-term cost-effectiveness are needed when considering the perspectives of a paying third-party, the patient, and of society in general. The aim was to evaluate the cost and effectiveness of adjuvant acupuncture to pharmacologic treatment vs pharmacologic treatment alone in migraine patients after a 3-month acupuncture course and a 6-month follow-up from all perspectives. METHODS: The study involved an open-label randomized clinical trial of patients receiving acupuncture (n=42), and a waiting list control group (n=44). The number of migraine days during the last 28 days, as well as direct and indirect costs were considered. The trial was registered under DRKS00009803. RESULTS: The total cost per patient reached €696 vs €285 after 3 months of acupuncture and €66 vs €132 in the acupuncture and control groups after a 6-month follow-up, respectively (P=0.071). The trends observed in effectiveness and costs from all perspectives are discussed. CONCLUSION: The inclusion of acupuncture in health care results beneficial mainly for its observed trend in reduced losses of productivity and income, with the latter often exceeding the costs of acupuncture treatment. As such, acupuncture may be recommended as an adjuvant treatment in migraine prophylaxis to standard pharmacotherapy

Positive impacts of important bird and biodiversity areas on wintering waterbirds under changing temperatures throughout Europe and North Africa

Migratory waterbirds require an effectively conserved cohesive network of wetland areas throughout their range and life-cycle. Under rapid climate change, protected area (PA) networks need to be able to accommodate climate-driven range shifts in wildlife if they are to continue to be effective in the future. Thus, we investigated geographical variation in the relationship between local temperature anomaly and the abundance of 61 waterbird species during the wintering season across Europe and North Africa during 1990-2015. We also compared the spatio-temporal effects on abundance of sites designated as PAs, Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), both, or neither designation (Unlisted). Waterbird abundance was positively correlated with temperature anomaly, with this pattern being strongest towards north and east Europe. Waterbird abundance was higher inside IBAs, whether they were legally protected or not. Trends in waterbird abundance were also consistently more positive inside both protected and unprotected IBAs across the whole study region, and were positive in Unlisted wetlands in southwestern Europe and North Africa. These results suggest that IBAs are important sites for wintering waterbirds, but also that populations are shifting to unprotected wetlands (some of which are IBAs). Such IBAs may therefore represent robust candidate sites to expand the network of legally protected wetlands under climate change in north-eastern Europe. These results underscore the need for monitoring to understand how the effectiveness of site networks is changing under climate change.Peer reviewe

The Concept Maps and their use in physics teaching in basic schools

    No full text
The goal of this master's theses is to make a theoretical analysis related to creation of concept maps and its use in elementary school, as well as creativity and other aspects of the creative process. Another part is the didactic analysis which includes a comprehensive analysis of the chosen physical thematic unit. This is followed by the verification of the created concept maps in the real teaching that was realized within the pedagogical probe

Operation of HVDC grids with emphasis on the switching phenomena

ObhájenoThe bachelor thesis is focused on the operation of HVDC grids with emphasis on the switching phenomena. The aim of this work is to described the principle of power transmission of HVDC lines and to determine the breaking process of DC current at high voltage levels. In this work, emphasis is also put on the processing of the functionality of modern hybrid HVDC breakers. The reader will be familiar with the most specific applications in the world. This work includes all the detailed information regarding the inverter stations, towers, insulators and conductors used in this type of transmission. Finally, there is a comparison of the different types of HVDC circuit breakers
