The Spontaneous Video and its Impact on the Digital Press

    Get PDF
Most of us now have instant access mobile phones with integrated cameras so we are able to record an unplanned video at any time and place within a matter of seconds. Modern technology has provided us with the ability to create spontaneous videos. Spontaneous videos are a new way of portraying our society and communicating events and, by means of the internet and web 2.0 applications, they have the potential to reach every corner of the globe, form an integral part of mass media news reports, and influence public opinion. This study establishes the basis for identifying and understanding the spontaneous video, analysing its application in video activism and citizen journalism, and investigating its impact on the digital press. To this end, we have analysed spontaneous videos created and shared online by IES Lluís Vives students in Valencia on the 15th of February, 2012. Students held a protest on this date against education cuts carried out by the Valencian Community government in Spain. The resulting spontaneous videos had a great impact on the media and were reported by Spanish digital newspapers including El País, El Mundo, La Razón, ABC and Público.

de Sitter black hole with a conformally coupled scalar field in four dimensions

A four-dimensional black hole solution of the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant, coupled to a conformal scalar field, is given. There is a curvature singularity at the origin, and scalar field diverges inside the event horizon. The electrically charged solution, which has a fixed charge-to-mass ratio is also found. The quartic self-interacting coupling becomes bounded in terms of Newton's and the cosmological constants.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, CECS style, energy conditions are discussed and some references were added. Comparing and modeling land use organization in cities

The advent of geolocated ICT technologies opens the possibility of exploring how people use space in cities, bringing an important new tool for urban scientists and planners, especially for regions where data is scarce or not available. Here we apply a functional network approach to determine land use patterns from mobile phone records. The versatility of the method allows us to run a systematic comparison between Spanish cities of various sizes. The method detects four major land use types that correspond to different temporal patterns. The proportion of these types, their spatial organization and scaling show a strong similarity between all cities that breaks down at a very local scale, where land use mixing is specific to each urban area. Finally, we introduce a model inspired by Schelling's segregation, able to explain and reproduce these results with simple interaction rules between different land uses.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures + Supplementary informatio

Orthognathic surgery is the cornerstone of the treatment of dentofacial deformities, which have a great psychological and social impact on the life of the patient. Patient satisfaction and the impact on quality of life have recently become clinical parameters of growing importance. The aim of this study was to undertake a transcultural adaptation, translation to Spanish and validation of this version of the questionnaire OQLQ, used to measure quality of life in the context of Spanish culture. Validation of the OQLQ questionnaire to the Spanish language was carried out through the methodology of translation and back translation, conceptual equivalence and piloting. The Spanish version was applied through a cross-sectional study to a total of 50 patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. The adapted and validated version showed adequate metric properties of reliability, change sensitivity and validity. In this study, a positive impact of orthognathic surgery on the specific quality of life was evident in 96% of patients, with an average improvement of 58% with respect to the initial score. Dentofacial deformities have a marked negative impact on the lives of patients, with orthognathic surgery being a therapeutic tool of great value in improving the quality of life in social, functional and aesthetic terms. The pilot test of this Spanish language version of the OQLQ proved valid for the assessment of quality of life in Spanish-speaking orthognathic patients or those with a Spanish culture

The Use of Instantaneous Phase for Improving Saft Images

6 páginas, 3 figuras. Proceedings of the 2013 International Congress on Ultrasonics (ICU 2013). 2-5 may 2013, SingaporeIn the SAFT technique (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) each element operates in pulse-echo mode, requiring only on e transmit/receive channel. The generated beam pattern can present grating lobes, even if the pitc h is half wavelength, which are related to image quality. By considering the instantaneous phase of the signals detected by each transducer, it is possible to estimate if the signal used in the delay-and-sum algorithm, for each combination of array element and image pixel, is due to a reflector or if it is noise, improving the contrast and reducing the grating lobes effects. The authors would like to thank the financial support from FAPESP (2010/02240-0, 2010/16400- 0), Capes and CNPq as well as the government of Spain (CICYT - DPI 2010 19376).Peer reviewe

Cardiac electrical defects in progeroid mice and Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome patients with nuclear lamina alterations

    Get PDF
Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare genetic disease caused by defective prelamin A processing, leading to nuclear lamina alterations, severe cardiovascular pathology, and premature death. Prelamin A alterations also occur in physiological aging. It remains unknown how defective prelamin A processing affects the cardiac rhythm. We show age-dependent cardiac repolarization abnormalities in HGPS patients that are also present in the Zmpste24-/- mouse model of HGPS. Challenge of Zmpste24-/- mice with the ß-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol did not trigger ventricular arrhythmia but caused bradycardia-related premature ventricular complexes and slow-rate polymorphic ventricular rhythms during recovery. Patch-clamping in Zmpste24-/- cardiomyocytes revealed prolonged calcium-transient duration and reduced sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium loading and release, consistent with the absence of isoproterenol-induced ventricular arrhythmia. Zmpste24-/- progeroid mice also developed severe fibrosis-unrelated bradycardia and PQ interval and QRS complex prolongation. These conduction defects were accompanied by overt mislocalization of the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43). Remarkably, Cx43 mislocalization was also evident in autopsied left ventricle tissue from HGPS patients, suggesting intercellular connectivity alterations at late stages of the disease. The similarities between HGPS patients and progeroid mice reported here strongly suggest that defective cardiac repolarization and cardiomyocyte connectivity are important abnormalities in the HGPS pathogenesis that increase the risk of arrhythmia and premature death.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

10 páginas, 8 figuras, 1 tabla. 6th International Symposium on NDT in Aerospace, 12-14th November 2014, Madrid, SpainThe medium anisotropy give rise to interesting effects in the physics of wave propagation: the angular dependence of the group velocity, the skew angle between pha se and group velocities, and the elastic focusing leading to the concentration of wave energy in dete rminated directions. All these effects are mode dependent and must be taken into account to choose the ad equate propagating mode in NDE or SHM applications. In this article the dispersion curves of p hase and group velocities, and the patterns of wave focusing for the A0 and S0 modes are theoretically obt ained and verified experimentally. The angular dependence of the group velocity and the effect of the anisotropic elastic focusing is studied in a 1.97 mm-thickness multilayer carbon-epoxy plain woven fab ric composite. The time traces are obtained by scanning the plate with the aid of a retro-reflective film st uck to the surface using a laser Doppler vibrometer. A good agreement between the theory and the expe rimental results was obtained. The Maris factor corresponding to the A0 mode shows smoother angular v ariation than that of the S0 mode which depends much more on the direction. The authors wish to thank to the CAPES Foundation, Ministry of Education of Brazil and to the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad del Gobierno de Esp aña (project FIS2013-46829-R) for partially support the work, and to the Alltec Materiais Compostos for preparing the laminate samples.Peer reviewe

Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes and scalar fields with a logarithmic branch

We consider a self-interacting scalar field whose mass saturates the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound, minimally coupled to Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant in D \geq 3 dimensions. It is shown that the asymptotic behavior of the metric has a slower fall-off than that of pure gravity with a localized distribution of matter, due to the back-reaction of the scalar field, which has a logarithmic branch decreasing as r^{-(D-1)/2} ln r for large radius r. We find the asymptotic conditions on the fields which are invariant under the same symmetry group as pure gravity with negative cosmological constant (conformal group in D-1 dimensions). The generators of the asymptotic symmetries are finite even when the logarithmic branch is considered but acquire, however, a contribution from the scalar field.Comment: 7 pages, CECS style, references adde

In this work, eight indicators were used to capture multidimensional poverty based on a new form of aggregation, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) of Alkire and Foster (2011). The MPI was constructed at the national level and by regions  of Argentina using microdata from the Permanent Household Survey. It was observed that the MPI declined sharply between 2004-2009 and then slowed down, adding up to a total drop of 5.1 pp. In fact, the MPI increased slightly between 2014 and 2019 in Cuyo and NOA. The greatest privations were found in access to health and employment.
