A multichannel reflectometer for edge density profile measurements at the ICRF antenna in ASDEX upgrade

    Get PDF
A multichannel reflectometer will be built for the new three-straps ICRF antenna of ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), to study the density behavior in front of it. Ten different accesses to the plasma are available for the three reflectometer channels that can be interchanged without breaking the machine vacuum. Frequency is scanned from 40 GHz to 68 GHz, in 10 mu s, which corresponds to a cut-off density ranging from 10(18) divided by 10(19)m(-3) in the Right cut-off of the X-mode propagation, for standard toroidal magnetic field values of AUG

Skin lesion detection and classification using convolutional neural network for deep feature extraction and support vector machine

Pigmented skin lesion identification is essential for detecting harmful pathologies related to this large organ, especially cancer. An analysis of the different methods and projects developed to diagnose these illnesses throughout the years showed that they had become very useful tools to identify melanoma, dermatofibroma, and basal cell carcinoma, among other types of cancer, are seen through the use of new computer-aided technologies. The most common diagnosis is based on dermoscopy and the dermatologist expertise that can improve accuracy with image detection techniques and classification by computer. Therefore, this study aims to develop software models able to detect and classify skin cancer. The following work is based on the use of dermoscopy images obtained from the HAM10000 dataset, a database with 10000 images previously tested and validated for research use. The main process is divided into three relevant parts: image segmentation, feature extraction (FE) using ten different pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) to establish a classification model. According to the results, the models of classification performed very well using the image segmentation step, showing average accuracies between 80.67% (Xception) and 90% (Alexnet). In contrast to the process without using image segmentation, where no method reached 60%. AlexNet plus SVM model showed the minor running time and presented the higher accuracy rate (90.34%) for the correct identification and classification of the seven categories of cutaneous lesions taken into account

Carbon stars in the X-shooter Spectral Library

    Get PDF
We provide a new collection of spectra of 35 carbon stars obtained with the ESO/VLT X-shooter instrument as part of the X-shooter Spectral Library project. The spectra extend from 0.3μ\mum to 2.4μ\mum with a resolving power above \sim 8000. The sample contains stars with a broad range of (J-K) color and pulsation properties located in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. We show that the distribution of spectral properties of carbon stars at a given (J-K) color becomes bimodal (in our sample) when (J-K) is larger than about 1.5. We describe the two families of spectra that emerge, characterized by the presence or absence of the absorption feature at 1.53μ\mum, generally associated with HCN and C2_2H2_2. This feature appears essentially only in large-amplitude variables, though not in all observations. Associated spectral signatures that we interpret as the result of veiling by circumstellar matter, indicate that the 1.53μ\mum feature might point to episodes of dust production in carbon-rich Miras.Comment: 29 pages, 21 figures, 9 tables, Accepted for publication in A&

The braid groups of the projective plane and the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence

International audienceWe study the pure braid groups Pn(RP2)P_n(RP^2) of the real projective plane RP2RP^2, and in particular the possible splitting of the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence 1Pm(RP2 x1,...,xnPn+m(RP2)pPn(RP2)11 \to P_m(RP^2 \ {x_1,...,x_n} \to P_{n+m}(RP^2) \stackrel{p_{\ast}}{\to} P_n(RP^2) \to 1, where n2n\geq 2 and m1m\geq 1, and pp_{\ast} is the homomorphism which corresponds geometrically to forgetting the last mm strings. This problem is equivalent to that of the existence of a section for the associated fibration p:Fn+m(RP2)Fn(RP2)p: F_{n+m}(RP^2) \to F_n(RP^2) of configuration spaces. Van Buskirk proved in 1966 that pp and pp_{\ast} admit a section if n=2n=2 and m=1m=1. Our main result in this paper is to prove that there is no section if n3n\geq 3. As a corollary, it follows that n=2n=2 and m=1m=1 are the only values for which a section exists. As part of the proof, we derive a presentation of Pn(RP2)P_n(RP^2): this appears to be the first time that such a presentation has been given in the literature
