    Electron-electron interaction effects in quantum point contacts

    We consider electron-electron interaction effects in quantum point contacts on the first quantization plateau, taking into account all scattering processes. We compute the low-temperature linear and nonlinear conductance, shot noise, and thermopower, by perturbation theory and a self-consistent nonperturbative method. On the conductance plateau, the low-temperature corrections are solely due to momentum-nonconserving processes that change the relative number of left- and right-moving electrons. This leads to a suppression of the conductance for increasing temperature or voltage. The size of the suppression is estimated for a realistic saddle-point potential, and is largest in the beginning of the conductance plateau. For large magnetic field, interaction effects are strongly suppressed by the Pauli principle, and hence the first spin-split conductance plateau has a much weaker interaction correction. For the nonperturbative calculations, we use a self-consistent nonequilibrium Green's function approach, which suggests that the conductance saturates at elevated temperatures. These results are consistent with many experimental observations related to the so-called 0.7 anomaly

    Contents of Gracilinanus

(some col.), map ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 29-30).Five nominal species of small didelphid marsupials previously referred to Gracilinanus differ conspicuously from the type species (G. microtarsus) and from all of the other valid taxa that we recognize as members of that genus (G. aceramarcae, G. agilis, G. dryas, G. emiliae, G. marica). These anomalous forms can be distinguished morphologically from Gracilinanus (in the strict sense just defined) by lacking maxillary palatal vacuities, a secondary foramen ovale, and a rostral process of the premaxillae; in addition, P3 is taller than P2, and accessory cusps are often present on C1. A new genus, Cryptonanus, is described to contain these forms, all of which are provisionally recognized as valid species: C. agricolai, C. chacoensis, C. guahybae, C. ignitus, and C. unduaviensis. Separate and combined phylogenetic analyses of nonmolecular data and nuclear gene sequences suggest that Cryptonanus and Gracilinanus (sensu stricto) are reciprocally monophyletic and closely related, although they were not consistently recovered as sister taxa in any analysis. Available specimen records document that Cryptonanus is widely distributed in mostly unforested tropical, subtropical, and temperate biomes south of the Amazon River (from ca. 7°S in the Brazilian state of Ceará to ca. 34°S in the Argentinian province of Buenos Aires), but significant range extensions could be expected from pitfall trapping in extralimital savanna landscapes. Scant field data suggest that species of Cryptonanus may often be associated with wet or seasonally inundated grasslands, an unusual habitat for small didelphids

    Intershell resistance in multiwall carbon nanotubes: A Coulomb drag study

    We calculate the intershell resistance R_{21} in a multiwall carbon nanotube as a function of temperature T and Fermi level (e.g. a gate voltage), varying the chirality of the inner and outer tubes. This is done in a so-called Coulomb drag setup, where a current I_1 in one shell induces a voltage drop V_2 in another shell by the screened Coulomb interaction between the shells neglecting the intershell tunnelling. We provide benchmark results for R_{21}=V_2/I_1 within the Fermi liquid theory using Boltzmann equations. The band structure gives rise to strongly chirality dependent suppression effects for the Coulomb drag between different tubes due to selection rules combined with mismatching of wave vector and crystal angular momentum conservation near the Fermi level. This gives rise to orders of magnitude changes in R_{21} and even the sign of R_{21} can change depending on the chirality of the inner and outer tube and misalignment of inner and outer tube Fermi levels. However for any tube combination, we predict a dip (or peak) in R_{21} as a function of gate voltage, since R_{21} vanishes at the electron-hole symmetry point. As a byproduct, we classified all metallic tubes into either zigzag-like or armchair-like, which have two different non-zero crystal angular momenta m_a, m_b and only zero angular momentum, respectively.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

    Evolutionary, comparative, and functional analyses of STATs and regulation of the JAK-STAT pathway in lumpfish upon bacterial and poly(I:C) exposure

    BackgroundThe Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK-STAT) system regulates several biological processes by affecting transcription of genes as a response to cytokines and growth factors. In the present study, we have characterized the STAT genes in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.), belonging to the order Perciformes, and investigated regulation of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway upon exposure to bacteria (Vibrio anguillarum) and poly(I:C), the latter mimicking antiviral responses.MethodsCharacterization and evolutionary analyses of the STATs were performed by phylogeny, protein domain, homology similarity and synteny analyses. Antibacterial and antiviral responses were investigated by performing KEGG pathway analysis.ResultsWe observed that lumpfish have stat1a, 2, 3, 4, 5a, 5b, and 6. Transcriptome-wide analyses showed that most components of the JAK-STAT pathway were present in lumpfish. il-6, il-10, il-21, iκBα and stat3 were upregulated 6 hours post exposure (hpe) against bacteria while type I interferons (IFNs), irf1, irf3, irf10, stat1 and 2 were upregulated 24 hpe against poly(I:C).ConclusionsOur findings shed light on the diversity and evolution of the STATs and the data show that the STAT genes are highly conserved among fish, including lumpfish. The transcriptome-wide analyses lay the groundwork for future research into the functional significance of these genes in regulating critical biological processes and make an important basis for development of prophylactic measure such as vaccination, which is highly needed for lumpfish since it is vulnerable for both bacterial and viral diseases

    The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging parents to see and hold their stillborn baby: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

    Background: Globally, during 2013 there were three million recorded stillbirths. Where clinical guidelines exist some recommend that professionals do not encourage parental contact. The guidance is based on quantitative evidence that seeing and holding the baby is not beneficial for everyone, but has been challenged by bereaved parents' organisations. We aim to inform future guideline development through a synthesis of qualitative studies reporting data relevant to the research question; how does the approach of healthcare professionals to seeing and holding the baby following stillbirth impact parents views and experiences? Methods/Findings: Using a predetermined search strategy of PubMed and PsychINFO we identified robust qualitative studies reporting bereaved parental views and/or experiences relating to seeing and holding their stillborn baby (final search 24 February, 2014). Eligible studies were English language, reporting parental views, with gestational loss >20weeks. Quality was independently assessed by three authors using a validated tool. We used meta-ethnographic techniques to identify key themes and a line of argument synthesis. We included 12 papers, representing the views of 333 parents (156 mothers, 150 fathers, and 27 couples) from six countries. The final themes were: "[Still]birth: Nature of care is paramount", "Real babies: Perfect beauties, monsters and spectres", and "Opportunity of a lifetime lost." Our line-of-argument synthesis highlights the contrast between all parents need to know their baby, with the time around birth being the only time memories can be made, and the variable ability that parents have to articulate their preferences at that time. Thus, we hypothesised that how health professionals approach contact between parents and their stillborn baby demands a degree of active management. An important limitation of this paper is all included studies originated from high income, westernised countries raising questions about the findings transferability to other cultural contexts. We do not offer new evidence to answer the question "Should parents see and hold their stillborn baby?", instead our findings advance understanding of how professionals can support parents to make appropriate decisions in a novel, highly charged and dynamic situation. Conclusions: Guidelines could be more specific in their recommendations regarding parental contact. The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging parents to see and hold their stillborn baby is paramount. Parental choice not to see their baby, apprehension, or uncertainty should be continuously revisited in the hours after birth as the opportunity for contact is fleeting and final

    The merit of high-frequency data in portfolio allocation

    This paper addresses the open debate about the usefulness of high-frequency (HF) data in large-scale portfolio allocation. Daily covariances are estimated based on HF data of the S&P 500 universe employing a blocked realized kernel estimator. We propose forecasting covariance matrices using a multi-scale spectral decomposition where volatilities, correlation eigenvalues and eigenvectors evolve on different frequencies. In an extensive out-of-sample forecasting study, we show that the proposed approach yields less risky and more diversified portfolio allocations as prevailing methods employing daily data. These performance gains hold over longer horizons than previous studies have shown

    When to Suspect Hidden Hypercortisolism in Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-Analysis

    Objective: To investigate whether the available literature helps to identify the characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) more frequently associated with hidden hypercortisolism (HidHyCo). Methods: A meta-analysis was performed using studies that assessed both the prevalence of HidHyCo in patients with T2D and the characteristics of these patients with and without HidHyCo. The DerSimonian and Laird (DSL) and Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman (HKSJ) methods were utilized. Results: Among the 18 available studies, 6 provided the necessary data. The association between HidHyCo and advanced T2D (based on the patients’ description given in each study in the presence of microvascular/macrovascular complications or insulin treatment plus hypertension or hypertension treated with 2 or more drugs), hypertension, insulin treatment, and dyslipidemia was reported in 5 (2184 patients), 6 (2283 patients), 3 (1440 patients), and 3 (987 patients) studies, respectively. HidHyCo was associated with advanced T2D as assessed by both the DSL (odds ratio [OR], 3.4; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 2.12-5.67) and HKSJ (OR, 3.60; 95% CI, 2.03-6.41) methods and with the prevalence of hypertension or insulin treatment as assessed by the DSL method (OR, 1.92; 95% CI, 1.05-3.50 and OR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.07-4.91, respectively) but not as assessed by the HKSJ method. Conclusion: Patients with advanced T2D have a higher prevalence of HidHyCo. These data inform about the selection of patients with T2D for HidHyCo screening

    A giant stem-group chaetognath.

    Chaetognaths, with their characteristic grasping spines, are the oldest known pelagic predators, found in the lowest Cambrian (Terreneuvian). Here, we describe a large stem chaetognath, gen. et sp. nov., from the lower Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerstätte, which exhibits lateral and caudal fins, a distinct head region with long antennae and a jaw apparatus similar to . has previously been interpreted as a total-group chaetognathiferan, as either a stem-chaetognath or gnathostomulid. We show that shares a ventral ganglion with chaetognaths to the exclusion of other animal groups, firmly placing these fossils on the chaetognath stem. The large size (up to 30 cm) and gut contents in suggest that early chaetognaths occupied a higher trophic position in pelagic food chains than today

    ThermoElectric Transport Properties of a Chain of Quantum Dots with Self-Consistent Reservoirs

    We introduce a model for charge and heat transport based on the Landauer-Buttiker scattering approach. The system consists of a chain of NN quantum dots, each of them being coupled to a particle reservoir. Additionally, the left and right ends of the chain are coupled to two particle reservoirs. All these reservoirs are independent and can be described by any of the standard physical distributions: Maxwell-Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein. In the linear response regime, and under some assumptions, we first describe the general transport properties of the system. Then we impose the self-consistency condition, i.e. we fix the boundary values (T_L,\mu_L) and (T_R,mu_R), and adjust the parameters (T_i,mu_i), for i = 1,...,N, so that the net average electric and heat currents into all the intermediate reservoirs vanish. This condition leads to expressions for the temperature and chemical potential profiles along the system, which turn out to be independent of the distribution describing the reservoirs. We also determine the average electric and heat currents flowing through the system and present some numerical results, using random matrix theory, showing that these currents are typically governed by Ohm and Fourier laws.Comment: Minor changes (45 pages

    Specific sequences within arginine–glycine-rich domains affect mRNA-binding protein function

    The discovery of roles for arginine methylation in intracellular transport and mRNA splicing has focused attention on the methylated arginine–glycine (RG)-rich domains found in many eukaryotic RNA-binding proteins. Sequence similarity among these highly repetitive RG domains, combined with interactions between RG-rich proteins, raises the question of whether these regions are general interaction motifs or whether there is specificity within these domains. Using the essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae mRNA-binding protein Npl3 (ScNpl3) as a model system, we first tested the importance of the RG domain for protein function. While Npl3 lacking the RG domain could not support growth of cells lacking Npl3, surprisingly, expression of the RG domain alone supported partial growth of these cells. To address the specificity of this domain, we created chimeric forms of ScNpl3 with RG-rich domains of S. cerevisiae nucleolar proteins, Gar1 and Nop1 (ScGar1, ScNop1), or of the Candida albicans Npl3 ortholog (CaNpl3). Whereas the CaNpl3 RG chimeric protein retained nearly wild-type function in S. cerevisiae, the ScGar1 and ScNop1 RG domains significantly reduced Npl3 function and self-association, indicating RG domain specificity. Nuclear localization of Npl3 also requires specific RG sequences, yet heterologous RG domains allow similar modulation of Npl3 transport by arginine methylation
