    Ataques Especulativos: Un Enfoque de Incertidumbre e Información

    Durante la década pasada hemos presenciado una proliferación de crisis cambiarias, tanto en Asia como en Europa y Latinoamérica, acompañada de abundante literatura acerca del tema. Es aceptado que, cuando las políticas monetaria y fiscal no son congruentes entre sí, habrá una crisis de balanza de pagos. La literatura reciente ha avanzado en varias direcciones para explicar los mecanismos de propagación de una crisis, que aplican aún cuando la política del gobierno es sostenible. No obstante, este tipo de modelos explica escasamente la iniciación de un ataque. El objetivo de este artículo es dar una explicación tentativa a esa iniciación. Se presenta un modelo donde la obtención de información es crucial para el inversionista y ésta se deteriora con el tiempo; en este marco, el ataque especulativo es un comportamiento óptimo para un inversionista que tenga la capacidad de llevarlo a cabo. Del modelo puede concluirse, entre otras cosas, que existe una relación inversa entre la frecuencia y la profundidad de los ataques. Además, el tamaño del agente relativo a la economía y la fuerza del efecto manada afectan de manera importante los costos del ataque y, de esta forma, afectan también la vulnerabilidad de cada economía a sufrir ataques especulativos.

    High resolution radio study of the Pulsar Wind Nebula within the Supernova Remnant G0.9+0.1

    We have conducted a radio study at 3.6, 6 and 20 cm using ATCA and VLA and reprocessed XMM-Newton and Chandra data of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) in the supernova remnant (SNR) G0.9+0.1. The new observations revealed that the morphology and symmetry suggested by Chandra observations (torus and jet-like features) are basically preserved in the radio range in spite of the rich structure observed in the radio emission of this PWN, including several arcs, bright knots, extensions and filaments. The reprocessed X-ray images show for the first time that the X-ray plasma fills almost the same volume as the radio PWN. Notably the X-ray maximum does not coincide with the radio maximum and the neutron star candidate CXOU J174722.8-280915 lies within a small depression in the radio emission. From the new radio data we have refined the flux density estimates, obtaining S(PWN) ~ 1.57 Jy, almost constant between 3.6 and 20 cm. For the whole SNR (compact core and shell), a flux density S(at 20 cm)= 11.5 Jy was estimated. Based on the new and the existing 90 cm flux density estimates, we derived alpha(PWN)=-0.18+/-0.04 and alpha(shell)=-0.68+/- 0.07. From the combination of the radio data with X-ray data, a spectral break is found near nu ~ 2.4 x 10^(12) Hz. The total radio PWN luminosity is L(radio)=1.2 x 10^(35) erg s^(-1) when a distance of 8.5 kpc is adopted. By assuming equipartition between particle and magnetic energies, we estimate a nebular magnetic field B = 56 muG. The associated particle energy turns out to be U(part)=5 x 10^(47) erg and the magnetic energy U(mag)=2 x 10^(47) erg. Based on an empirical relation between X-ray luminosity and pulsar energy loss rate, and the comparison with the calculated total energy, a lower limit of 1100 yr is derived for the age of this PWN.Comment: 10 pages,8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A, June 13 200

    (I Can’t Get No) Antisatisfaction

    Substructural approaches to paradoxes have attracted much attention from the philosophical community in the last decade. In this paper we focus on two substructural logics, named ST and TS, along with two structural cousins, LP and K3. It is well known that LP and K3 are duals in the sense that an inference is valid in one logic just in case the contrapositive is valid in the other logic. As a consequence of this duality, theories based on either logic are tightly connected since many of the arguments for and objections against one theory reappear in the other theory in dual form. The target of the paper is making explicit in exactly what way, if any, ST and TS are dual to one another. The connection will allow us to gain a more fine-grained understanding of these logics and of the theories based on them. In particular, we will obtain new insights on two questions concerning ST which are being intensively discussed in the current literature: whether ST preserves classical logic and whether it is LP in sheep’s clothing. Explaining in what way ST and TS are duals requires comparing these logics at a metainferential level. We provide to this end a uniform proof theory to decide on valid metainferences for each of the four logics. This proof procedure allows us to show in a very simple way how different properties of inferences (unsatisfiability, supersatisfiability and antivalidity) that behave in very different ways for each logic can be captured in terms of the validity of a metainference

    Assessing Child Obesity and Physical Activity in a Hard-to-Reach Population in California's Central Valley, 2012-2013.

    IntroductionIn California's agricultural Central Valley, the rate of childhood obesity is higher than the national average. Adequate physical activity contributes to obesity prevention and its assessment is useful to evaluate the impact of interventions.MethodsNiños Sanos, Familia Sana (Healthy Children, Healthy Family [NSFS]) uses community-based participatory research to implement an intervention program to reduce childhood obesity among people of Mexican origin in the Central Valley. Anthropometric measurements were conducted on more than 650 children enrolled in NSFS. Physical activity data from a subgroup of children aged 4 to 7 years (n = 134) were collected via a wearable accelerometer.ResultsChildren were classified on the basis of age and sex-adjusted body mass index as healthy weight (57.7%); overweight (19.3%), or obese (23%). Logistic regression showed that moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was associated with a child's likelihood of having a healthy BMI (odds ratio: 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.05; P = .017).ConclusionNSFS's community-based participatory approach resulted in successful use of a commercial electronic device to measure physical activity quantity and quality in this hard-to-reach population. Promotion of adequate daily MVPA is an appropriate and necessary component of NSFS's childhood obesity prevention strategy

    Preliminary Bulbous Bow Design Tool Applying K Nearest Neighbours Classification and Regression Model

    Designing bulbous bows for ships remains a challenging task.  Their impact on different design attributes as well as their change in performance when operating off their intended design condition renders this as a multidimensional problem.  This paper explores the application of machine learning techniques to a sample of in-service vessel data to develop a preliminary design tool.  The ships' data was analysed together with their bulbous bow data to generate machine learning models using a supervised approach.  The K Nearest Neighbours Classifier and Regression models were used as the basis of the tool.  Together, these models can be used to predict whether to install a bulbous bow and the recommended dimensionless coefficients for new vessels. Generating this preliminary bulbous bow design tool required the introduction of new dimensionless coefficients that discretise the bulbous bow's longitudinal section.  The preliminary design tool gives the designer the ability to determine whether a bulbous bow should be fitted and, if so, to obtain an initial estimate of the bulbous bow required for the vessel being designed, based on key input parameters that relate to the ship and its operation.  The new design tool is demonstrated to provide preliminary design details for bulbous bows through the case studies

    Influence of heat-treatment on torsional resistance to fracture of Nickel-Titanium endodontic instruments

    AbstractOver the past 3 decades, Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) instruments have become an important part of the armamentarium for shaping phase of root canal treatment. NiTi endodontic files have increased flexibility and strength compared with stainless steel instruments, but they seem to be vulnerable to fracture in clinical situations. Many variables might contribute to file separation, but the 2 main causes are cyclic fatigue and torsional stress. Heat treatment (thermal processing) is one of the most fundamental approaches toward adjusting the transition temperatures of NiTi alloys and affecting the fatigue and torsional resistance of NiTi endodontic files. In recent years, novel thermo-mechanical processing and manufacturing technologies such as controlled memory wire (CM-wire), M-Wire and electrical discharge machining (EDM) have been developed to optimize the microstructure of NiTi alloys and their mechanical properties. Aim of this work was to investigate the torsional resistance (maximum torque load, and angular rotation) of NiTi instruments made by different thermo-mechanical and manufacturing processes.One-hundred new Hyflex EDM One- File (#25/0.08, CM-wire and EDM process), WaveOne Primary (#25/0.08, M-wire), ProTaper Next X2 (#25/0.06, M-wire), Hyflex CM (#25/0.06, CM-wire) and F6 SkyTaper(#25/0.06, conventional NiTi) files were used. Torque and angle of rotation at failure of new instruments (n = 20) were measured using a torsiometer according to ISO 3630-1 for each brand. Data were analyzed using the analysis of variance test and the Student- Newman-Keuls test for multiple comparisons. The fracture surface of each fragment was examined with a scanning electron microscope.Files made by CM wire size #25, 0.06 taper (Hyflex CM) showed same torque load and angular rotation to fracture than conventional NiTi (F6 SkyTaper) (P > .05); instead CM files (manufacturing by grinding or EDM process) recorded lower maximum torque load (P .05) but significantly higher angular rotation (P < .05) to fracture than M-wire instruments size #25, 0.06 taper (ProTaper Next).Hyflex EDM One-File and Hyflex CM have same torque load and angular rotation to fracture than F6 SkyTaper due to the higher flexibility and cross-sectional area of CM files tested than conventional NiTi one.Moreover CM files showed lower torque load and higher angular rotation to fracture than M-wire instruments due to the flexibility of CM alloy. M-wire instruments showed same torque load but significantly lower angular rotation than conventional NiTi files due to the same flexibility and higher cross-sectional area of the files tested

    FEBS Open Bio and our fellow FEBS Press journals have a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity of the scientific literature. The life sciences, in particular, are suffering from an ongoing reproducibility crisis, and this may in part be fuelled by mistakes, manipulation or outright fabrication of the presented data. We were recently made aware of several articles published in FEBS Open Bio that appear to contain full or partial duplications of images from other published articles in a different scientific context. In most of these cases, the duplications were taken from previously published papers. After thorough investigation and subsequent discussion within FEBS Press and with Wiley's Integrity in Publishing Group, we have retracted most of these articles
