Eesti Maaülikooli (EMÜ) ja SA Keskkonnainvesteeringute Keskuse vahel 08. aprillil 2013. a.
sõlmitud lepingu nr. 3-2_7/208-5/2013 kohaselt viis läbi EMÜ metsakorralduse osakond
2013-2014. a. 50-l metsade looduslikkuse taastamise püsiproovitükil kordusseire. Projekti
vastutavaks täitjaks oli EMÜ metsakorralduse osakonna dotsent Henn Korjus, projekti
põhitäitjaks oli EMÜ metsakorralduse osakonna teadur Diana Laarmann.
Käesoleva lepingu täitmise tulemusena viidi läbi puistu-, alustaimestiku, samblike ja putukate
inventuurid. Puistuinventuuril kordusmõõdeti 50 püsiproovitükil asuvad puud, mille
eelmisest mõõtmisest (2008.a.) oli möödunud 5 aastat, teostati loodusliku uuenduse
inventuur. Välitööde tegemisel osalesid metsakorralduse osakonna töötajad, doktorandid,
magistrandid (Henn Korjus, Diana Laarmann, Ando Lilleleht, Rait Rotšan, Priit Pärn, Grete
Laarmann, Leena Siir). Alustaimestiku inventuuril teostati soontaimede ja sammalde seire
proovitükile rajatud püsiruudus. Seiret ja määramist viisid läbi Liis Kasari, Grete Laarmann,
Leena Siir, Ruth Mändma. Samblike inventuur viidi läbi TÜ teaduri Ede Leppik’u poolt, selleks
otsiti üles varem seiratud objektid. Putukate inventuuri teostas Ilmar Süda. Andmesisestuse
arvutisse tegid Diana Laarmann, Ruth Mändma, Grete Laarmann, Ede Leppik ja Ilmar Süda.
Kõik inventeerimisandmed on ühtlustatud ForMIS andmebaasiga. Esmase andmetöötluse viis
läbi Diana Laarmann, taastamisedukust hindasid Henn Korjus, Diana Laarmann, Teele Paluots,

Looduslikkuse taastamise katseala uuringu jätkamine Karula rahvuspargis : SA Keskkonnainvesteeringute Keskuse ja Eesti Maaülikooli vahel 1. juulil 2014. a. sõlmitud lepingu nr. 3-2_7/184-3/2014 lõpparuanne
Uurimuses kasutatud taastamise proovialade puistuid mõjutas enam teostatud taastamisvõte või
selle puudumine. Suurem häil vähendab puistu rinnaspindala, tagavara ja täiust. Reservaadi
iseloomulik loodusmetsadele.
Loodusliku uuenduse tekkel on oluline osa valgustingimustel. Tulemustest selgus, et rohkem
looduslikku uuendust on tekkinud ülepõletatud häiluga proovialal, mis on uuenenud
valgusnõudlike liikidega nagu harilik mänd ja kask. Teised alad on uuenenud peamiselt kuusega.
Suurim samblike liigirikkus
ja mitmekesisus esines põletatud okstega proovialal, ülepõletatud häiluga proovialal ja reservaadi
proovialal. Neist erines oluliselt häiluga prooviala, kus esines kõige vähem samblikuliike.
Proovialadel registreeriti järgnevad haruldased samblikuliigid: Absconditella lignicola, Gray
porosamblik, lehvik-porosamblik, Hertelidea botryosa, Friesi soomussamblik, Micarea elachista,

jäi harvendusest puutumata suurenes keskmine lamapuidu maht prooviala kohta 1,9 m3/ha

harvenduse korral 11, mille indikaatorliikideks on valguslembesed soontaimeliigid.
proovialal. Registreeritud samblikuliikidest esinesid järgmised haruldased liigid: Chaenothecopsis
57
epithallina, lehvik-porosamblik, Friesi soomussamblik, Micarea elachista, Micarea melanobola,
Micarea misella.
Torikulisi leiti kokku 31 erinevat liiki, enim reservaadis. Kontrollalad ei erinenud
taastamisvõttega aladest. Reservaadialadel leiti vääriselupaikade ja põlismetsa indikaatorliike:
pisarnahkis, roosa pess, tumepruun taelik, männitaelik, volt-tardnahkis, roostetorik. Lisaks leiti
häiluga aladelt männi-ebatarrik, lillatümak, männi-vahakorgik, kollane püsipoorik..

An Analysis of Forest Management Non-Conformities to FSC Standards in Different European Countries
The purpose of this study was to assess the most frequent non-conformities identified in different European countries in the processes of forest management certification according to FSC standards. A total of 31 active certificates from five countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Romania, Slovenia and the United Kingdom) were analysed, including all active certificates (as of 1st of June 2014) from three countries along with a sample of 13 FSC certificates issued in the UK and one certificate covering 95% of the certified forest area in Slovenia. 253 non-conformities in relation to FSC standard requirements were identified as formulated by the audit teams and the most frequently identified non-conformities in the certification process were those related to Principle 6 - Environmental impact (34%), Principle 4 - Community relations and worker's rights (17%) and Principle 8 - Monitoring and Assessment (13%). A slight positive correlation was noticed between the FSC certified area and the total number of non-conformities, with a closer link in the case of Principle 9 - Maintenance of high conservation value forests, and Principle 4. The non-conformities related to Principles 4, 6 and 9 appeared to be significantly influenced in occurrence by country development; less often in the UK compared with the other four countries
Climate Change and Restoration of Degraded Land
The United Nations Climate Change Conference, Durban 2011, delivered a breakthrough on the international community's response to climate change. In the second largest meeting of its kind, the negotiations advanced, in a balanced fashion, the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, the Bali Action Plan, and the Cancun Agreements. The outcomes included a decision by Parties to adopt a universal legal agreement on climate change as soon as possible, and no later than 2015.
One of the decisions adopted by COP 17 and CMP 7 regard to the land use, land-use change and forestry, and invites the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to review and, if necessary, update supplementary methodologies for estimating anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions by sources and removals by sinks resulting from land use, land-use change and forestry activities under Article 3, paragraphs 3 and 4, of the Kyoto Protocol.
Land degradation is a human-induced or natural process which negatively affects the productivity of land within an ecosystem. The direct causes of land degradation are geographically specific. Climate change, including changes in short-term variation, as well as long-term gradual changes in temperature and precipitation, is expected to be an additional stress on rates of land degradation.

Imprints of management history on hemiboreal forest ecosystems in the Baltic States
In the Baltic States region, anthropogenic disturbances at different temporal and spatial scales mostly determine dynamics and development phases of forest ecosystems. We reviewed the state and condition of hemiboreal forests of the Baltic States region and analyzed species composition of recently established and permanent forest (PF). Agricultural deforestation and spontaneous or artificial conversion back to forest is a scenario leading to ecosystems designated as recent forest (RF, age up to two hundred years). Permanent forest (PF) was defined as areas with no records of agricultural activity during the last 200 yr, including mostly forests managed by traditional even-aged (clear-cut) silviculture and salvage after natural disturbances. We hypothesized that RF would have distinctive composition, with higher dominance by hardwoods (e.g., aspen and birch), compared to PF. Ordination revealed divergence in the RF stands; about half had the hypothesized composition distinct from PF, with a tight cluster of stands in the part of the ordination space with high hardwood dominance, while the remaining RF stands were scattered throughout the ordination space occupied by PF with highly variable species composition. Planting of conifers, variability in site quality, and variability in spatial proximity to PF with relatively natural ecosystem legacies likely explained the variable compositions of this latter group of RF. We positioned the observations of RF in a classic quantification of site type conditions (based on Estonian forest vegetation survey previously carried out by LA mu hmus), which indicated that RF was more likely to occur on areas of higher soil fertility (in ordination space). Climatic and anthropogenic changes to RF create complex dynamic trends that are difficult to project into the future. Further research in tracing land use changes (using pollen analysis and documented evidence) should be utilized to refine the conceptual framework of ecosystem legacy and memory. Occurrence and frequency of deforestation and its characteristics as a novel disturbance regime are of particular interest.Peer reviewe
The number of tree species on Earth
One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global groundsourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are 73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). These findings highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to anthropogenic changes in land use and climate, which disproportionately threaten rare species and thus, global tree richness

Evenness mediates the global relationship between forest productivity and richness
1. Biodiversity is an important component of natural ecosystems, with higher species richness often correlating with an increase in ecosystem productivity. Yet, this relationship varies substantially across environments, typically becoming less pronounced at high levels of species richness. However, species richness alone cannot reflect all important properties of a community, including community evenness, which may mediate the relationship between biodiversity and productivity. If the evenness of a community correlates negatively with richness across forests globally, then a greater number of species may not always increase overall diversity and productivity of the system. Theoretical work and local empirical studies have shown that the effect of evenness on ecosystem functioning may be especially strong at high richness levels, yet the consistency of this remains untested at a global scale. 2. Here, we used a dataset of forests from across the globe, which includes composition, biomass accumulation and net primary productivity, to explore whether productivity correlates with community evenness and richness in a way that evenness appears to buffer the effect of richness. Specifically, we evaluated whether low levels of evenness in speciose communities correlate with the attenuation of the richness–productivity relationship. 3. We found that tree species richness and evenness are negatively correlated across forests globally, with highly speciose forests typically comprising a few dominant and many rare species. Furthermore, we found that the correlation between diversity and productivity changes with evenness: at low richness, uneven communities are more productive, while at high richness, even communities are more productive. 4. Synthesis. Collectively, these results demonstrate that evenness is an integral component of the relationship between biodiversity and productivity, and that the attenuating effect of richness on forest productivity might be partly explained by low evenness in speciose communities. Productivity generally increases with species richness, until reduced evenness limits the overall increases in community diversity. Our research suggests that evenness is a fundamental component of biodiversity–ecosystem function relationships, and is of critical importance for guiding conservation and sustainable ecosystem management decisions
