Abstract accepted for participation in a special issue of Textual Practice titled "Inscriptions of worldliness: linguistic materiality and the poetics of the vernacular", with Helena Bodin, Stefan Helgesson and Markus Huss serving as guest editors. The issue will appear in the summer of 2019.In Wunderkammer (2008), Finland-Swedish poet Ralf Andtbacka (b. 1963) explores the dynamics between orality and technology, and between writing, eroticism and desire, through the discussion and artistic use of the vernacular, i.e. dialectal, Ostrobothnian Swedish. Thematically and linguistically, the collection confronts its readers with a process where spoken words, as sounds, are transposed into visual objects on the book page. Writing is one of many technologies for collecting, preserving or reproducing the human voice through history; it also has a transformative power. Andtbacka’s collection is a Wunderkammer of languages, jargons, intertextual references and encyclopedic exerpts fusing historical marginalia, transatlantic poetic influences and locally inscribed language. Furthermore, Wunderkammer engages with the historical legacy of Finland-Swedish language regulation, and brilliantly manages to work through a force field of purity and authenticity where the literary use of the vernacular has been either condemned or reterritorialized in terms of national identity and historical rootedness in a territory. In this article, I explore the the aesthetic and political ramifications of the dynamics of Ostrobothnian and technologies aimed at recording or reproducing the vernacular in Wunderkammer. These technologies include the literary work itself, as text, and in this context, Andtbacka’s erotic poems involving the vernacular are central. From a perspective of literary multilingualism, multimodality and reader experience, and with inspiration from the critical work of Daniel Heller-Roazen and Naoki Sakai, I argue that Wunderkammer’s hybrid eroto-poetics envisages a sensorially acute reimagining of difference, not only in terms of linguistic orders and borders, but also through the enactment of the malleability of the border between language and noise.Finland-Swedish poet Ralf Andtbacka’s (b. 1963) Wunderkammer (2008) is ripe with languages, jargons, intertextual references and encyclopedic excerpts fusing historical marginalia, transatlantic poetic influences and locally inscribed language. Wunderkammer explores the dynamics between orality and technology and between language and desire through the discussion and artistic use of the vernacular, most prominently dialectal, Ostrobothnian Swedish. Thematically and linguistically, the collection confronts its readers with a process where spoken words, as sounds, are transposed into visual objects on the book page. Furthermore, Wunderkammer engages with the historical legacy of Finland-Swedish language regulation where the vernacular has been trapped in a force field defined by the poles of purity vs. authenticity. In this article, I explore the aesthetic and political ramifications of the dynamics of Ostrobothnian dialect and technologies aimed at recording or reproducing the vernacular in Wunderkammer. These technologies include the literary work itself, and in this context, Andtbacka’s erotic poem ‘Tongknoll’ heavily featuring the vernacular is central. From a perspective of literary multilingualism, multimodality and reader experience, I argue that Wunderkammer envisages a sensorially acute reimagining of difference, not only in terms of linguistic orders and borders but also through the enactment of the malleability of the border between language and noise.Peer reviewe

The Noise of Multilingualism: Reader Diversity, Linguistic Borders and Literary Multimodality

The article proposes a new multimodal approach to literary multilingualism, with special attention devoted to how readers with different language skills partake in making literary multilingualism happen. It presents a critical assessment of previous scholarship on literary multilingualism, which we claim is characterized by monolingual assumptions and a problematic division between mono- and multilingual literature. As a continuation of the theoretical argument, multimodal readings of three contemporary poets Cia Rinne, Caroline Bergvall and Ralf Andtbacka are presented. Instances of contemporary multilingual poetry, the article concludes, can help us to critically scrutinize notions of clear-cut linguistic borders, as well as to study the intricate dynamics between the acoustic and visual aspects of literary multilingualism

The Reader as Multilingual Soloist: Linguistic and Medial Transgressions in the Poetry of Cia Rinne

Languages in Motion. Multilingualism and Urban Spaces in Sara Razai’s Jag har letat efter dig and Johanna Holmström’s AsfaltsĂ€nglar e article is a study of multilingualism, urban space and mobility/immobility in two Finland- Swedish novels, Sara Razai’s Jag har letat efter dig (”I Have Been Searching for You”, 2012) and Johanna Holmström’s AsfaltsĂ€nglar (”Asphalt Angels”, 2013) through perspectives of post-mono- lingualism (Yildiz) and literary urban studies. In Razai’s novel, a Finland-Swedish woman and a refugee forge a relationship in broken Finnish, disrupting the link between mother tongue and language of a ections. In an analogous relationship to the depiction of movement (cold) and keeping still in con ned spaces (warmth, safety), Finnish becomes a small space for the lovers to connect. In Holmström’s novel, room for manoeuvre is restricted by gender and ethnicity, although the main characters manage the tension between suburb and city center in di erent ways. In AsfaltsĂ€nglar, Arabic is a sign of parental power and rules, but the language is also associated with a white Finland-Swedish woman, a convert, the girls’ mother. ere is a discrepancy between Arabic’s function in the novel – as a local language – and how it is marked for the reader – as foreign. Trilingual Helsinki slang, on the other hand, becomes a hybrid marker of the Suburb as Heimat. Both novels renew the Finland-Swedish urban prose tradition by bringing in new languages and new kinds of language, and by associating these varieties with di erent kinds of characters

    Get PDF
The article is a study of norms and questions regarding linguistic variation as expressed in literary criticism and debate, through an analysis of reviews of the Finland-Swedish novels Sista sommaren [The Last Summer] by Kim Weckström and Drakarna över Helsingfors [The Kites above Helsinki], both published in 1996, as well as newspaper material concerning the lack of Finland-Swedish nominees for that year’s Finlandia award for best novel of the year. The study shows that the Finnish-adjacent language of Weckström’s novel is controversial, since it is not contained to dialogue but is also the language of the narrator, while Westö’s linguistic choices are approved upon to a higher degree, since occurences of Finnish and slang are mostly contained to dialogue. Weckström’s novel raises questions of comprehensibility and identification, as well as questions of contesting local and regional minority identities. The study shows that linguistic variation is viewed by critics as a phenomenon connected to prose and to authenticity, much like the case has been during the last century, with identity politics making up a more recent category, compared to debates on the phenomenon during the early 20th centrury.Peer reviewe

FlersprĂ„kighet i Jac. Ahrenbergs och Elmer Diktonius prosa undersöker Julia Tidigs sprĂ„kblandning i Finlands svenska litteratur. Under sent 1800-tal kryddade viborgaren Jac. Miksi suomenkielinen aines suomenruotsalaisessa kirjallisuudessa on niin arkaluontoinen asia? TohtorinvĂ€itöskirjassa Att skriva sig över sprĂ„kgrĂ€nserna. FlersprĂ„kighet i Jac. Ahrenbergs och Elmer Diktonius prosa (Kirjoittaminen yli kielirajojen. Monikielisyys Jac. Ahrenbergin ja Elmer Diktoniuksen proosassa) Julia Tidigs tutkii kieltensekoitusta Suomen ruotsinkielisessĂ€ kirjallisuudessa. Viipurilainen Jac. Saako kaunokirjallisuus rikkoa korrektin ruotsin kielen rajoja? MitĂ€ tapahtuu kirjailijasta saadulle nĂ€kemykselle, jos hĂ€n tekee nĂ€in? Vaatiiko monikielinen teksti monikielisen lukijan?

Peer reviewe
