Knowledge accumulation from disease outbreak response
This thesis explores the dynamics of knowledge accumulation from disease outbreak responses. It explores the development of a paradigm of disease outbreak response over the last 20 years, and then explains how this paradigm was challenged and re-entrenched by the 2013-2016 Ebola Crisis. The methodology for this thesis was split into two arms: a document analysis arm and an interview analysis arm. Based in an embedded case study, the document analysis makes the argument for a re-entrenchment of the paradigm through analysing the depth and detail of lessons learned from the 2013-2016 Ebola Crisis. Within this broad case, an analysis of interviews with 14 report authors and 23 report users allows for a detailed examination of the production and use of codified knowledge in disease outbreak responses. The thesis makes two primary contributions - one empirical and the other theoretical. For its empirical context, this thesis demonstrates a path-dependency in knowledge accumulation from disease outbreak responses and makes recommendations as to methods for ameliorating this. The thesis finds how a lack of meaningful engagement in expert panel processes can bias so-called lessons learned reports. In its theoretical context, this thesis contributes an additional empirical context to the literature on knowledge accumulation and learning. The thesis finds that knowledge accumulation in outbreak responses differs from other disaster scenarios because of an isolation of the Global Health epistemic community and offers evidence for codified knowledge as a useful tool and process for learning in complex, ambiguous, equivocal scenarios
Donepezil Impairs Memory in Healthy Older Subjects: Behavioural, EEG and Simultaneous EEG/fMRI Biomarkers
Rising life expectancies coupled with an increasing awareness of age-related cognitive decline have led to the unwarranted use of psychopharmaceuticals, including acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs), by significant numbers of healthy older individuals. This trend has developed despite very limited data regarding the effectiveness of such drugs on non-clinical groups and recent work indicates that AChEIs can have negative cognitive effects in healthy populations. For the first time, we use a combination of EEG and simultaneous EEG/fMRI to examine the effects of a commonly prescribed AChEI (donepezil) on cognition in healthy older participants. The short- and long-term impact of donepezil was assessed using two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. In both cases, we utilised cognitive (paired associates learning (CPAL)) and electrophysiological measures (resting EEG power) that have demonstrated high-sensitivity to age-related cognitive decline. Experiment 1 tested the effects of 5 mg/per day dosage on cognitive and EEG markers at 6-hour, 2-week and 4-week follow-ups. In experiment 2, the same markers were further scrutinised using simultaneous EEG/fMRI after a single 5 mg dose. Experiment 1 found significant negative effects of donepezil on CPAL and resting Alpha and Beta band power. Experiment 2 replicated these results and found additional drug-related increases in the Delta band. EEG/fMRI analyses revealed that these oscillatory differences were associated with activity differences in the left hippocampus (Delta), right frontal-parietal network (Alpha), and default-mode network (Beta). We demonstrate the utility of simple cognitive and EEG measures in evaluating drug responses after acute and chronic donepezil administration. The presentation of previously established markers of age-related cognitive decline indicates that AChEIs can impair cognitive function in healthy older individuals. To our knowledge this is the first study to identify the precise neuroanatomical origins of EEG drug markers using simultaneous EEG/fMRI. The results of this study may be useful for evaluating novel drugs for cognitive enhancement
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite

Radiation Therapy and Indigenous Peoples in Canada and Australia: Building Paths Toward Reconciliation in Cancer Care Delivery
Indigenous peoples represent approximately 5% of the world's population and reside in over 90 countries worldwide. They embody a rich diversity of cultures, traditions, languages and relationships with the land that are shared through many generations and that are distinct from those of the settler societies within which they now live. Many Indigenous peoples have a shared experience of discrimination, trauma, and violation of rights, rooted in complex sociopolitical relationships with settler societies that are still ongoing. This results in continuing social injustices and pronounced disparities in health for many Indigenous peoples around the globe. Indigenous peoples exhibit a significantly higher cancer incidence, mortality, and poorer survival compared to non-Indigenous peoples. Cancer services, including radiotherapy, have not been designed to support the specific values and needs of Indigenous populations, resulting in poorer access to cancer services for Indigenous peoples globally across the entire cancer care spectrum. Specific to radiotherapy, available evidence demonstrates disparities in radiotherapy uptake between Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients. Radiotherapy centres are also located disparately further away from Indigenous communities. Studies are limited by a lack of Indigenous-specific data to help inform effective radiotherapy delivery. Recent Indigenous-led partnerships and initiatives have helped to address existing gaps in cancer care, and radiation oncologists play an important role in supporting such efforts. Transgenic Expression of EFR and Bs2 Genes for Field Management of Bacterial Wilt and Bacterial Spot of Tomato
Field trials were conducted at two locations in Florida to evaluate transgenic tomato expressing the ELONGATION FACTOR TU RECEPTOR (EFR) gene from Arabidopsis thaliana, the Bs2 gene from pepper, or both Bs2 and EFR (Bs2/EFR) for managing bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum and bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas perforans. Expression of EFR or Bs2/EFR in the susceptible genotype Fla. 8000 significantly reduced bacterial wilt incidence (50 to 100%) and increased total yield (57 to 114%) relative to lines expressing only Bs2 or the nontransformed Fla. 8000 control, although the marketable yield was not significantly affected. Following harvest, surviving symptomatic and nonsymptomatic plants were assessed for colonization by R. solanacearum. There were no significant differences in the population at the lower stem. Interestingly, in the middle stem, no bacteria could be recovered from EFR or Bs2/EFR lines but viable bacterial populations were recovered from Bs2 and nontransformed control lines at 102 to 105 CFU/g of stem tissue. In growth-chamber experiments, the EFR transgenic tomato lines were found to be effective against seven different R. solanacearum strains isolated from the southeastern United States, indicating utility across the southeastern United States. In all of the bacterial spot trials, EFR and Bs2/EFR lines had significantly reduced disease severity (22 to 98%) compared with the Fla. 8000 control. The marketable and total yield of Bs2/EFR were significantly higher (43 to 170%) than Fla. 8000 control in three of four field trials. These results demonstrate for the first time the potential of using the EFR gene for field management of bacterial wilt and bacterial spot diseases of tomato
